Friday the 13th: The Game - Final Review

As someone who was Jason Voorhees for Halloween in fifth or sixth grade (probably not a great idea today), I’ve definitely been looking forward to stepping back into the hockey mask in Friday the 13th: The Game. So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that I’ve found taking on the persona of Jason and roaming around as an iconic invincible force of murder is the highlight of this asymmetrical multiplayer killing spree. Unfortunately, the large majority of your time is spent controlling the machete-fodder, who are much less fun.

Let me start off by assuring you this is a much, much better game than whatever that crap was you might have played on NES. (That’s a low bar, granted.) The design borrows directly from the films which, when you think about it, were really asymmetrical multiplayer matches all along. It’s Jason versus up to seven teenagers: He’s hunting them, and they’re cooperating to escape.

The MSI GE62VR Camo Squad edition (See it on Amazon) is a VR-ready 15-inch laptop packed into a chassis that sports a desert camouflage paintjob as part of a tie-in with Ghost Recon Wildlands. You can judge the look for yourself, but in my opinion it's somewhere on the border between ridiculous and totally awesome. Given how well the GE62VR performs, it tips the scales toward the "awesome" side of things.

Danger Zone Review

On paper, Danger Zone looked set to be a Burnout fan’s dream come true. In it, Burnout’s original creators would take a fresh crack at the gameplay that defined their careers – all while the actual Burnout IP collects dust on EA’s shelf. And while it does perfectly recreate the memorable Crash mode from a gameplay mechanics perspective, it omits almost all of Burnout’s summer-y, tongue-in-cheek personality, and alternate modes. The result is a bare-bones game that’s good for a few hours of fun, but lacks staying power.

Danger Zone does indeed only consist of one mode: Crash Testing, which includes 20 Crash Test Junctions. Each Junction is an intersection you launch your car into at high speed, and they have to be approached strategically to inflict maximum damage and collect as many power-ups as possible. Who should you hit first? Where should you fling your car using the mid-air Aftertouch controls after triggering your Smashbreaker explosive? All that experimentation makes it feel more like a puzzle game than a racer. Know too that you’ll fail, and fail often; the Retry button will get a workout. And though loading times aren’t too bad on PS4, they’re just not quite quick enough to be painless.

Boruto Episode 9 Review

Another week, another dead end for the main plot of Boruto. Just when it seems we might finally get an answer about Boruto’s dojutsu or the demon beast, the story finds yet another way to sidetrack itself. Given that we are only nine episodes into the series it is hard to complain about the lack of plot activity, but I can’t help but feel like we are being teased at this point. Misdirection or no, the episode does quickly tie up the storylines from last week and offers up two fight scenes as consolation for the otherwise dull episode.

Still determined to prove his Byakugan is for real, Boruto agrees to spar with his aunt Hanabi. Despite giving it his all, he is unable to manifest his powers. That night he leaves the Hyuga Clan compound in search of food only to come across another possessed ninja, this time the actor who plays the heroic ninja Kagemasa. Naruto takes the enraged actor down with the help of Sarada, reaffirming his belief in his eye power.
