Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie Review

20th Century Fox’s animated adventure Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie tells the story of a grouchy principal who turns into the underwear-clad, super-powered invention of his two least favorite students. Based on Dav Pilkey’s children’s books of the same name, this screen adaptation manages to live up to the standards set by its source material.

The film is, basically, a superhero origin story. It follows best friends George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), two overly imaginative kids whose constant pranks have made them an enemy of their school’s principal, Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms). When Krupp threatens to separate them permanently, George and Harold accidentally hypnotize him into believing he is actually their dim-witted superhero creation, Captain Underpants.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew Review

Stepping onto the bridge of the USS Aegis in Star Trek: Bridge Crew is a dream come true for a lot of Trek fans. It lets you experience the fantasy of manning a Federation starship with three of your friends (or solo, awkwardly), and like most multiplayer VR games it’s hilarious to mess around with as you learn how things work. But by the time I gained beyond a cadet’s level of understanding of its systems, it became clear that there’s virtually no depth to this simulation.

The attention to detail on the two bridge sets is great, from the captain’s chair to the consoles and the viewscreen. Some liberties are taken with the Aegis’ control panels to make them more video game-friendly than what we see in the modern Trek movies, but the Original Series Enterprise bridge is impressively accurate. I wish I could get up and wander around the bridge – or the entire ship, really – and take it all in, but you’re unfortunately glued to your seat in one of the four positions.

Arrow: Season 5 Review

Note: this is a mostly spoiler-free review of the fifth season of Arrow, which is now on Netflix. I'll discuss basic character and plot details but save direct spoiler chatter for the end of the review.

More than any other Arrowverse series, Arrow had a lot to prove when it returned in fall 2016. The series had fallen quite a bit from its peak in the Deathstroke-dominated Season 2. Following the thoroughly disappointing Season 4 finale, Arrow was at its lowest point ever. It wasn't clear at that point whether the show would continue beyond Season 5. Moreover, it wasn't clear whether the show should continue. But thanks to a change in approach, a terrific new villain and a generally more consistent level of execution, Season 5 wound up redeeming a troubled series and recapturing the appeal of those first two years.

House of Cards: Season 5 Review

This is a non-spoilery review for all 13 new episodes of House of Cards: Season 5, which is now available on Netflix. In a separate piece, I'll talk about story specifics and the ending to the season as a whole, but here you won't have to worry about big spoilers.

As part of Netflix's giant month without chill -- May -- which saw the return of Bloodline, Sense8, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Ranch, and F is for Family, House of Cards' fifth season was squeezed in under the wire, on Tuesday the 30th, so that it could be make the Emmy cut-off date for nominations. Had it just waited one more week and dropped on Friday, June 2nd, there would have been no hope for Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, or any of the other performers on this once-buzzed about Netflix Original to possibly get recognized for their work on the show.
