This is a spoiler-free advance review of the first episode of I'm Dying Up Here, which premieres on Showtime on Sunday, June 4. The pilot is also currently available to stream on Showtime's website and YouTube.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single stand-up comedian in possession of a strong sense of humor must be in want of a stable personal life. That's the driving idea behind shows like Louie, and it remains true with I'm Dying Up Here, Showtime's new period dramedy about a group of struggling comics in early '70s Los Angeles. But while there's always an appeal in watching a series that aims to explore the tortured soul that exists the 99% of the week they aren't on-stage, I'm Dying Up Here's heavy ensemble focus proves to be its undoing.

Doctor Who Review

Spoilers follow for this episode of Doctor Who.

In “The Lie of the Land,” the conclusion to the three-part monk story, the Doctor faces what may be his greatest foe yet: fake news. Truly, it is an enemy we can all fear.

And the episode proves to be a pretty good one, satisfyingly wrapping up the overall story while also charting some new ground, providing more than a couple of thrills and head-fakes, commenting on current events in a not at all subdued way, and further advancing the vault/Missy storyline just enough to keep us on the hook.

The idea of our heroes finding themselves in an alternate reality is a well-worn trope in sci-fi television, going back at least as far as that time Spock got a goatee. And while here the technical whatchamacallits of the scenario makes it less an alternate world than a mind-controlled population perceiving an alternate history, the effects are more or less the same: Bill has found herself six months out from her deal with the monks in the previous episode, with the hideous creatures now masters of the planet as a result. The thing is, the monks are perceived by just about everyone on Earth as benign caretakers who have been with humankind throughout their evolution.

My Hero Academia Episode 23 Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

To say my expectations were high going into "Shoto Todoroki: Origin" would be an understatement. Season 2 has been building up to Deku's fight against Todoroki ever since the Sports Festival began, raising the bar to what I feared was unachievable heights. However, thanks to the brilliantly delivered backstory of Todoroki, coupled with Deku's selfless actions to help his friend break free from the shackles of his past, "Shoto Todoroki: Origin" surpassed my lofty expectations and now stands as My Hero Academia's finest episode and quite possibly the best 24 minutes of television I've seen all year.

Tekken 7 - Final Review

Tekken 7 is a love letter to this long-running franchise and its staggering complexity. Yet somehow it still manages to be accessible to just about anyone wanting to mash buttons, and its huge amount of customization unlocks constantly give you something to strive for beyond its silly and slightly cliched story. In a pretty good time for fighting games, with Injustice 2 knocking it out of the park, Killer Instinct continuing to give us quality content years after its release, Street Fighter 5 hitting its stride after a rocky start, and a new version of Guilty Gear Xrd air-dashing our way, the King of the Iron Fist Tournament will not be outdone.

On the surface, Tekken 7 is familiar, taking place on the series’ signature three-dimensional stages which allow you to move to your opponent’s sides as well as forward and back. Attacks are inspired by Asian martial arts and other fighting styles from around the world, placing most of the emphasis on strikes and very little on the projectiles you typically find in other fighting games. Movement is more deliberate, and carelessly jumping or dashing can be disastrous.
