The Surge: A Walk in the Park DLC Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

I mostly enjoyed my time with The Surge (read the full review) when it came out back in May, and I’m glad to have an excuse to jump back into its bleak-yet-bright sci-fi world. While the A Walk in the Park DLC might not add much to or dramatically change up the gameplay, it offers more of the same solid combat and exploration in a colorfully creepy new setting.

A Walk in the Park retroactively inserts its new area early into the existing storyline (near the beginning, so if you start a new campaign or New Game + you don’t have to go far to see it), essentially adding an optional six- to eight-hour side mission. Building on The Surge’s tale of robots run amok, it takes some cues from Westworld, The Simpsons, and Jurassic Park and sends you into Creo World, an oh-so-cleverly-named amusement park that serves as a “fun zone” for Creo’s employees.

The Gifted: “outfoX” Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The Gifted’s “outfoX” delivered a tense and thrilling episode with big stakes and big ramifications for the whole cast. There was a clear focus on all the main plot threads that have been developing all season, taking them in an unexpected and intriguing direction.

Warning: full spoilers for this episode!

It was with great relief that all the cards were finally put on the table in regards to what Lauren and Andy can do. Throughout the whole season we’ve been given teases about their ancestors’ destructive tendencies and watched them learn to use their powers individually, but now we saw firsthand how it all works when they perform a mutant power c-c-combo.

We haven’t actually seen them fire off their combined hand-holding power but it’s clear that it’s enough to effortlessly bring down a whole building. Some of the powers depicted on The Gifted can look a little wonky (which is mostly forgivable on a TV budget), but the effect of Lauren and Andy’s hands glowing and a Beyonce-fan blowing their hair up in slow motion and seeing their vision unifying so they can manipulate the environment around them was next-level awesome. For all the fire, ice, and magnetism the movies have thrown around over the years, we’ve never seen anything quite like this.

Supergirl: "Reign" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

“Reign” capped off the first half of Supergirl’s third season, and in the process encapsulated so much of what’s good and bad about this series right now. The series is really thriving on the strength of its new main villain at the moment, but some other, less appealing plot points dragged down what should have been a high point for the season so far.

First things first - Reign may well be the best thing to happen to this series since its move from CBS to The CW. She’s definitely the best villain Supergirl has had. The fact that I feel comfortable making that declaration so soon says a lot about how poorly this show has handled its villains in the past. But regardless, Reign is exactly the sort of imposing yet well-realized antagonist Kara has been needing for some time.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 118 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Tensions were high as Universe 2 and 6 struggled and failed to prevent their annihilation in a tense, action-packed episode. Unfortunately, Episode 118’s split focus between two stories wasn’t balanced well, causing Universe 2’s erasure to feel considerably less important. Even still, great callbacks to scenes earlier in the franchise worked very well during the Universe 6 battle, and several touching moments helped give Universe 2 a touching but somber farewell.

The Namekian battle between Universe 6 and 7 was a great homage to past Dragon Ball events. The callback to Namekian fusion was particularly impactful with the implications it had for Planet Namek in Universe 6, but also what it meant for Piccolo and the few times he’s performed this forbidden technique. Super also handled Gohan well, pushing him into the mentor role for just a short time and using that to mirror scenes from as far back as the Saiyan Saga of Dragon Ball Z. Beyond fighting, the erasure of Universe 6 allowed for some good somber scenes, like seeing Beerus stoically watch his counterpart be erased. Universe 6 has been built up as the fun rival to Universe 7 for a long time, and their complete obliteration made for a truly sad moment in Super history.
