Arrow: "Elseworlds, Part 2" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This review contains spoilers for Arrow Season 7, episode 9, which is Part 2 of the DC TV "Elseworlds" crossover event. 

After seasons of teasing and namedropping, the Arrowverse finally takes us to Gotham for Part 2 of the "Elseworlds" crossover, introducing Ruby Rose as Batwoman (aka Kate Kane), and revealing why Oliver and Barry haven't crossed paths with Batman in all their years of crime-fighting.

While ostensibly designed as the Arrow portion of the crossover, this episode has to do a lot of heavy lifting in other areas - both in establishing Batwoman enough to sow the seeds for the heroine's potential spinoff series, and sufficiently explaining The Monitor's motives so that the final part of the crossover hopefully won't feel like a complete infodump when all is revealed.

Mortal Engines Review

Mortal Engines is the big-budget live-action steampunk movie fans of that subgenre have always wanted, complete with stunning visuals and top-notch world-building. Christian Rivers makes his directorial debut after working in visual effects with frequent collaborators (and co-writers and co-producers) Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens and delivers the kind of ambitious blockbuster we haven’t seen in years.

Mortal Engines is so eager to show you what it’s got, that the film starts while the Universal logo is still on screen, as we see purple-hued bombs that start going off in various locations on the famous globe on the logo. Visually and scale-wise, this is an oversized Fury Road on steroids. Based on the novels by Philip Reeve, we start with two literal cities chasing each other, spitting up smoke and dirt as the wheeled monstrosities make their slow way across a vast and desolated European countryside. London shoots massive harpoons at the smaller city, while teeny tiny trees are decimated beneath the giant wheels of the metropolis. As if the visual connections to the Wasteland of Max Rockatansky weren’t enough, I wouldn’t blame you for expecting to see Furiosa after listening to Junkie XL’s grandiose score here.

The Flash: "Elseworlds, Part 1" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The Arrowverse kicked off its "Elseworlds" crossover with a body swap adventure on The Flash that was a fun prelude to what seems to be a darker story to tell. That "fun" aspect is in keeping with one of the key takeaways from the episode, as "Elseworlds, Part 1" offered a surprisingly introspective look at the Flash and Arrow shows and title characters.

Bookended by hints at a larger conflict involving The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) and Arkham Asylum psychiatrist Dr. John Deegan (Jeremy Davies), "Elseworlds, Part 1" was primarily interested in exploring the inherently silly body swap premise at the center of the episode. Seeing Oliver and Barry having to live each others’ lives was as delightful as it sounds on paper, though kicking the story off in this way didn’t add as much gravity to the crossover as previous Arrowverse events have done.
