Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Arrow fans were promised a game-changer with this week’s episode, and “Eleven-Fifty-Nine” didn’t disappoint. Damien Darkh came roaring back as a threat and reminded our heroes that there are costs to putting on a costume and fighting crime every night. And the show got the catalyst it needed to escalate the conflict between HIVE and Team Arrow into full-blown war leading into the final leg of Season 4.
Thanks to marketing and recent interviews, it was already a given coming into this episode that a major character would die and the mystery behind that flash-forward scene from the premiere would finally be answered. But even without that outside knowledge there was a pervasive sense of dread propelling “Eleven-Fifty-Nine” forward. Between Malcolm Merlyn resurfacing to help bust his new buddy Damien Darkh out of prison and Andy’s loyalties being called into question, there was a sense that something terrible was about to unfold. The early clashes between Team Arrow and the remnants of the League of Assassins only added to this unease and dread.
