Black Sails: Season 3 Review

Warning: Full spoilers for Black Sails: Season 3 below.

Last year, Black Sails' second season easily improved upon the first, with an arc that amazingly filled in Flint's backstory and explained his bond/relationship with Miranda. But the recently completed third season really pushed the show forward into expert territory, giving everyone in the ensemble a cracking good arc while also ushering us toward an exciting bottleneck-style finale focused on open war between the pirates and England. Everything clicked. Everything tracked. It was a puzzle and all the pieces fit. And in a very genuine, thoughtful way.

Flint began the year filled with haunted rage - seeing visions of Miranda and Thomas and ruminating about death and fate. As Silver would put it in the finale, Flint's demons basically became everyone else reality as the captain's anger over Miranda's death led him on a bloody warpath against all forms of colonization. And Silver would get swept up in the wake of this, not knowing how to deal with Flint's ever-growing darkness. One ship-wrecking storm and a starvation crisis later, Silver would then start falling into his own dark patterns, and thusly seeing the benefits of such a path. And all of this accentuated perfectly by amazing performances from Toby Stephens and Luke Arnold.
