My Hero Academia Episode 1 Review

My Hero Academia—the new shonen series from animation studio Bones (Fullmetal Alchemist, Wolf's Rain)—capitalizes on the trials of underdog Izuku Midoriya, who desires more than anything to become a superhero, despite not having any special powers of his own. The first episode, dubbed "Izuku Midoriya: Origin," lays a solid foundation for what may very well be anime's next great shonen series.

Izuku, a third-year junior high student, finds himself among the 20 percent of people who don't possess a special ability (aka Quirk) in a world where the supernatural is normal. As such, Izuku is preyed upon by Katsuki Bakugo, a cocky and unrelenting school bully who hopes to get accepted into the prestigious U.A. High School, where select students can train to become world class heroes. Unfortunately for the Quirkless Izuku, the odds of him achieving the same goal are stacked against him, but, in true underdog fashion, he won't let that stop him from doing all he can to make that dream a reality.
