The Walking Dead #153 Review

With the finale of The Walking Dead Season 6 leaving viewers hanging, it's just as well that Negan is taking a more prominent role in the comic again. The Walking Dead #153 builds on the villain's surprise escape from his one-man prison. What's next for Negan? What dark designs does he have on Rick Grimes and the citizens of Alexandria? Is the enemy of Negan's enemy a friend or just another enemy? Those questions are the driving force of this issue, which makes the most of the increasingly tense and unpredictable status quo in the Walking Dead Universe.

There's a certain perverse thrill in seeing Negan transition from cooped-up prisoner to outright threat again here. The character was already about the closest thing to a supervillain this series will ever have. Watching Negan don his trusty old jacket as if it were a totem of power only furthers that impression. At this point, Negan reclaiming his bat Lucille will be like Thor holding aloft his mighty Mjolnir. Robert Kirkman takes the opportunity to remind readers of just how devious and scary a guy Negan can be here. He's clearly a man with a plan. And just when you think Negan might be showing his soft side for a change, he shifts gears and doubles down on his vile behavior. It's good to have him back.
