Apple unveils iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus with 3D Touch

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Today's Apple Event continued with the reveal of the latest line of iPhones. While it wasn't the iPhone 7, today did see the unveiling of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will introduce the idea of 3D Touch. Touted as the next generation of multi-touch, 3D Touch will also recognize force. This allows for a new way to program shortcuts, both through the OS and from within app. Display sensors will detect how hard users are pressing onto the screen, allowing for tactile feedback. Capacitive sensors work with the sensors and accelerometers within the device to measure these force taps, allowing for mini-taps and full taps.

While the main applications for 3D Touch will center around apps, the grander possibilities for such an idea could be felt in gaming for years to come. Pressure-sensitive gestures could open the door for entirely new game mechanics and present new ways to play games. Whether game developers decide to jump on this new idea remains to be seen.

The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will feature a new 12MP iSight camera that's capable of taking 4K videos, a 5MP FaceTime camera, and a second-generation TouchID that's 2x faster than the previous generation.

The iPhone 6S will be available for $199 while the iPhone 6S Plus will cost $299. Both phones will be available on September 25.
