Avengers Standoff: Welcome to Pleasant Hill #1 Review

In this day and age, it's refreshing to be able to dive into a new Marvel event knowing almost nothing about the story or the characters involved. Marvel has kept mum regarding the specifics of Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill, only revealing that it's about a mysterious town whose secrets spark a divisive conflict among the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. This prelude issue sheds more light on the nature of Pleasant Hill and what its existence means for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. If you weren't interested in this crossover before now, this issue might just win you over.

It wouldn't be out of line to describe Avengers Standoff as "Civil War 1.5." Whether this event will actually lead into Civil War II remains to be seen, but there is a very political angle to the conflict. Writer Nick Spencer builds on plot threads form his Captain America run as he explores S.H.I.E.L.D.'s latest alarming abuse of authority and explores the age-old question of whether security is more important than freedom. By the end of this opening chapter it's not hard to see where or why the lines will be drawn in this conflict.
