Power Man and Iron Fist #1 Review

It's been ages since Marvel has published a comic starring the classic Heroes for Hire, Luke Cage and Danny Rand. The new Power Man and Iron Fist is a perfect storm of timing (thanks to Netflix's Marvel lineup) and talent. It's not exactly rocket science. Bring in two fresh voices to craft a book about characters readers are demanding more of and you're bound to arrive at something special.

Writer David F. Walker and artist Sanford Greene look to be taking the slow and steady approach with this new book. Their focus is on reacquainting readers with the two title characters rather than immediately building up a huge conflict, tapping into any mystical martial arts mythology or anything else of the sort. This is a buddy cop story that hinges on the brotherly bond between Luke and Danny, and that's why it works. This issue gets plenty of mileage out of painting Danny as the hyperactive, attention-starved hothead and Luke as the exasperated older brother. There's a a real sense of authenticity to their relationship and the examination of Luke's transition from being a freewheeling hero to a quiet family man. At some point the story barely even matters; it's just a treat to be able to watch these two characters play off of each other.
