Tomb Raider #1 Review

Not since DC tapped Gene Luen Yang to write Superman last year has a mainstream comic features such an intriguing and unexpected choice of writer. Mariko Tamaki (best known for her 2014 graphic novel This One Summer) has teamed up with artist Phillip Sevy for this new series. The hope is that Tamaki will bring a fresh voice and new perspective to Lara Croft's world of adventure and intrigue. It's probably best to keep expectations in check with this first issue, however. Tamaki and Sevy deliver a perfectly competent first issue, but not one that necessarily stands out from the Tomb Raider comics that preceded it.

The main problem with this first issue is that it starts out well thanks to an action-packed flash-forward sequence and then abruptly loses its momentum once the timeline shifts back. This opening sequence captures the essence of the modern Lara Croft. She's skilled and very competent with a couple games under her belt, but still vulnerable. She's definitely miles away from the T-Rex-battling superhuman she was in the old days.
