Superman #50 is one of the more significant Superman comics to come around in the last several years. Aside from the obvious milestone number, this issue wraps up both the "Savage Dawn" crossover and writer Gene Luen Yang's tenure on the book. This isn't quite the proper farewell for Yang that Action Comics #50 was for Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder last week, but that's more a problem of space than anything else.
As sparse and uneventful as Superman/Wonder Woman #27 (the penultimate chapter of this crossover) was, maybe it's not the worst thing that Superman #50 feels overstuffed. Yang and his various artistic partners chronicle the final showdown between a super-charged Vandal Savage and the recently re-powered Man of Steel as Savage's comet plunges towards Earth and threatens to usher in a new reign of darkness for the world. While comics featuring four or five pencillers are, unfortunately, standard practice for DC as the company prepares for their next relaunch, in this case the approach makes sense. There's a dose of A Christmas Carol to this finale, as Savage torments Clark with visions of his past, present and future and attempts to sway Superman to his side.
