This is a spoiler-free advance review of the first episode of Animal Kingdom, which premieres on TNT on Tuesday, April 14 at 9 pm ET/PT.
Based on the fates of short-lived shows like Rush Hour and Limitless, it's pretty clear that using an established name is no guarantee of ratings success. With Animal Kingdom, the hope is that the decision to adapt the lesser-known but critically acclaimed 2010 Australian film was motivated more by storytelling opportunity than name cache. The film version thrived on a combination of a stellar cast and a razor-sharp script. For now, this TV adaptation only has the former.
