After several episodes teasing the debut of Flex Mentallo, Doom Patrol finally went all-in with the Man of Muscle Mystery this week. The series didn't exactly have a burning need for a new team member right now, but Flex proved to be a welcome addition to the roster all the same. He's yet another reminder of Doom Patrol unique ability to blend deep tragedy with sublime stupidity.
This episode downplayed Flex's meta-heavy origin story as a comic book ad brought to life in favor of focusing on the tragedy of his past. Like so many characters in the series, he's a forgotten relic of a bygone era whose powers resulted in him losing everything. Yet his personality is colorful enough that it never felt as though this episode was rehashing old beats.
