Like every RTX 3080, the TUF Gaming OC packs all of the improvements of the RTX 30-series: double the CUDA cores, more advanced shaders, improved RT and Tensor cores – all of which combine to make a graphics card that is powerful enough for 4K gaming, RTX on. The core of the GPU, including all of the upgrades that come with the RTX 30-series as a whole, are identical between models. I won’t rehash that here, but for a detailed breakdown, read our review of the RTX 3080 Founders Edition. Instead, I’ll be focusing on what sets this card apart and how it performs in our battery of tests. The first and most noticeable difference is Asus’s cooling solution. While the Founders Edition used a novel dual-axial design, the TUF Gaming OC’s cooler looks much more familiar. It features a large heatsink with three fans. The middle fan spins opposite of the others, decreasing turbulence, and Asus has also improved the surface contact of the heatspreader to better dissipate heat, as well as added a dedicated VRAM heatsink. They claim this increases heat dissipation up to 15% from its last generation of ROG Strix graphics cards. The enclosure has very limited RGB, only a single logo that was hidden by its dual 8-pin power lines. The aluminum shroud and black backplate look very sleek and darn good overall. The card is far from svelte, however, and was still by far the largest and most standout piece of my test PC. Under the hood, the TUF Gaming OC earns its name by applying a modest 100MHz bump to the Boost Clock, bringing its highest printed speed up to 1.81GHz versus the Founders Edition’s 1.71GHz. It also features a dual BIOS for Performance and Quiet modes that can be selected with a switch at the top of the card. There’s also a second HDMI 2.1 port compared to the FE’s single HDMI output. To test the Asus RTX 3080 TUF Gaming OC, I ran it through the same array of tests as the Founders Edition, which included games and synthetics, noting the maximum temperature throughout. As in the Founders Edition review, I was curious how its performance broke down compared to last generation, as well as directly compared to the Founders Edition. Here’s how they stack up: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=asus-rtx-3080-tuf-gaming-oc-performance-comparison&captions=true"] Compared to the 2080 Super, the Asus TUF Gaming OC offers a massive performance leap. Compared to the RTX 3080 Founders Edition, however, the improvements are marginal. The 100MHz boost may account for the 1-4% increases I documented, but these results are close enough that I couldn’t tell the difference in actual gameplay. Instead, the TUF Gaming OC makes a better case for overclocking the card thanks to its effective cooling solution. Once it was warmed up, it would reliably peak at 68C, one degree cooler than the Founders Edition and was notably more quiet under full load – which is remarkable since the Founders Edition was already a fairly quiet card. This is especially true in its Quiet BIOS setting, which pushed temperatures to 74C maximum. At the time of writing, Nvidia’s automatic overclocking tool found in MSI Afterburner and EVGA’s Precision X-1 were not available for testing, but there is clearly thermal headroom for pushing the card beyond the performance noted here.Purchasing Guide
