Vikings: "Portage" Review

Had it not been for the trio of big deaths this week's episode would have run a bit dry. Mostly because all the big moments we saw - save for perhaps one - we've been accurately anticipating for weeks now. Simply put, we've known that Odo and Kwenthrith (and assumedly Aethelwulf) were done for. So waiting for the plots and plans to actually come to fruition got a bit tedious. But this week, Odo finally got executed (off screen, alas) and Ecbert managed to rid himself of the crazy Mercian queen.

Though, to be fair, Ecbert's plan may have always been to conquer Mercia for himself and take Judith for his queen (after his son's assassination, presumedly), but Kwenthrith's death was not part of it. He didn't want her to rule there, but he also was willing to just hold her prisoner. It was her own aggressive actions that got her killed - by Judith's hand, no less - as she tried to kill Ecbert herself in the still of night. Though right as she was killed, she seemed to realize that killing him would only have gotten herself, and her unborn child, killed soon afterward.
