A Hologram for the King Review

Based on the 2012 novel by Dave Eggers (Where the Wild Things Are, Away We Go) and adapted for the screen by Tom Tykwer (Clous Atlas, Run Lola Run), A Hologram for the King stars Tom Hanks as an American businessman, Alan Clay, who travels to Saudi Arabia for a tech-sales pitch to an elusive monarch, only to find out that he's going to have to wait a lot longer than he expected. To make matters worse, he and his team have been annexed to an off-site tent, with no food, air conditioning or -- gasp! -- wifi. Oh, and Alan also finds a lump on his back, which makes him fear for his health too.

For a film that's basically 97 minutes of a guy waiting around for a meeting, there's a surprising amount that happens along the way. First and foremost, this is a story about a down-on-his-luck marketeer acclimating to and finding solace in a world that's completely foreign to him -- literally. But with the help of an eccentric taxi driver, Yousef (Alexander Black), and a rare female Saudi doctor, Zahra (Sarita Choudhury), Alan begins to acclimate to his new surroundings and, what's more, come to terms with himself and his own place in the world.
