Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
The Flash’s Season 1 finale easily ranks among the show’s best episodes, with “Welcome to Earth-2” offering the only real competition. Crafting a Season 2 finale that met that high standard was always going to be a very tall order to fill, and it’s not terribly surprising that “The Race of His Life” didn’t quite measure up. This episode had plenty of great moments, but in the end it was more notable for the groundwork it laid than the way it wrapped up the conflict with Zoom.
There are some larger problems in terms of the way the last few episodes have been structured that I think diminished this episode a bit. So much of what made “Fast Enough” great boiled down to the big emotional moments between Barry and his loved ones - the farewell between Barry and Joe, the reunion with his mother, etc. But with the way the Zoom conflict has unfolded lately, most of the key emotional beats wound up occurring in “The Runaway Dinosaur” two weeks ago. There was still plenty of emotional drama this week, particularly when it came to Barry mourning Henry’s death, but none of it hit quite as hard as it did a year ago.
