Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
In an excellently creepy and emotional season finale, Bates Motel handed us an episode that could also act as a series ender. It's not, but the way we left things - the whole perverse, delusional "Christmas with the Bates" ending - could easily round off the show and connect us directly to the Hitchcock movie. Not that many leaps would be involved. Even though the movie has never necessarily been the show's stated endpoint. We're just all naturally assuming it is.
But by the time "Norman" was over, we got a general idea of how Norman Bates would now be living his life alone. In a house full of illusions and dangerous visions. A dead dog that now barks and plays. A dead mother who loves and plays (the piano). And Norman as a very sadly deranged young man who knows that both his mom and the dog are dead but has now somehow convinced himself that them both coming back is...okay? Natural? That his mom was somehow faking her death so that she could get away from Alex and that all Norman had to do was dig her up, wind her up, and let her go? Very tragic and very well done.
