DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Season 1 Finale Review

And with that, Legends of Tomorrow closed out its first season. The show has had a rocky run at best over the past five months, but it really has seemed to hit its stride in the last few episodes. The finale continued that trend with what was easily one of the strongest episodes of the season.

That surge in quality had little to do with the final Vandal Savage showdown. Savage has had his moments this season (mainly in the last few weeks), but on the whole he just hasn’t been the compelling foe and magnetic personality the show really needed. One of my few complaints with this finale is that the writers didn’t give his death quite the gravitas it deserved. This is a villain who has tormented Kendra and Carter for 4,000 years and utterly destroyed Rip’s life. Savage’s death needed a certain poetic justice that this episode didn’t deliver. At the very least, I would have liked to see Mick kill Savage with Leonard’s gun rather than his own. The villain ultimately felt like a plot device that ushered in a larger doomsday scenario for the team to confront.
