Warning: Full spoilers for Once Upon a Time: Season 5 follow.
A tricky part about assembling the Once Upon a Time puzzle has to be the sheer number of possibilities. As a fan of fairy tales, folklore, and Disney, I don't know what it would be like to try to choose what to include in the mythology of a series that has opened the door to all of those elements. Once often succeeds at weaving the strings together, then twisting and connecting characters and stories in creative, unexpected ways. They accomplished the feat in Season 5 by adding Camelot, the Underworld, and even Jekyll and Hyde, but they hit some roadblocks too.
The half-season long themes continued to be an issue, as they have been since Season 3. On the upshot, despite the settings of Camelot and Underworld, the main cast stayed in focus. Emma and her struggle as Dark Swan and her love for Hook and her family took the spotlight regardless of anything else going on. Regina continued to adapt to being on the light side and tried to find her happiness. Rumplestiltskin, well he was Rumplestiltskin, but he embraced who he was. Those three characters were given plenty of attention and not lost in the sea of new faces such as Merlin, Merida, or Hades.
