Pokémon Go's beta has been ongoing in Japan for the past few months. Developer Niantic made the decision to expand beta participation gradually, and the United States is finally on the docket.
Niantic opened the floodgates by way of a registration page on its website. Signing up entails giving the developer your email address and your preferred platform: iOS or Android. However, just because you sign up doesn't mean you're guaranteed a spot: Niantic selects players according to a lottery system.
"We would love for you to - if selected - download the field test version and play it. Your regular gameplay and feedback will help us iterate, polish and make the game launch-ready."
Additionally, Niantic asks participants to keep their time with the game under wraps in order to "have an element of surprise for our users at public launch."
Pokémon Go is a free-to-play game supported by microtransactions. Like Ingress, it's an augmented reality app that utilizes real-life settings: for example, you'll need to visit lakes and other bodies of water to capture Squirtle and other water-type Pokémon.
Pokémon Go and will be available on Android and iOS devices later this year.
