The Americans: "The Magic of David Copperfield..." Review

A notably strong episode of a notably strong series this week, as The Americans delivered what felt like a powerful season finale… even thought it’s not the season finale at all.

So much is changing. Nina’s dead. Martha’s been sent off to Russia. Gaad has lost his job. The consequences are unrelenting here, but it feels like it’s all the inevitable result of what’s come before it.

When the “previously on” included footage of Lisa and Maurice, I groaned a bit, because that subplot was one of the show’s rare missteps. But as it turned out, that storyline clearly is done now, given Elizabeth murdered Lisa when she wanted to confess! Once Lisa began asking Elizabeth to turn herself in with her, this outcome was a strong possibility, and yet it was still a gasp-worthy moment when Elizabeth hit her over the head with that bottle. Matthew Rhys directed this episode and he did an excellent job of portraying the mixture of the mundane and the shocking that sorrounded the Jennings at all times.
