The penultimate chapter of a mini-series can usually go one of two ways, either deftly setting the stage for a big showdown in the finale, or merely chugging along and prolonging the inevitable. Unfortunately, Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #4 is more of the latter. There's some good material at play in this issue, but much of the danger and excitement of previous chapters is absent.
Right away, issue #4 stumbles by deflating the tension of issue #3's cliffhanger. What was shaping up to be a tale of Peter's desperate struggle to rescue his family instead becomes a dialogue-heavy look at the regent's empire and the underground S.H.I.E.L.D. resistance. This change in focus slows down the pace just when it should be building up. This issue does at least shed more light Regent's motivations and how the villain fits into the larger scope of Battleworld. He still has yet to emerge as a fully realized, three-dimensional character, however.
