Batman #43 Review

The latest chapter of Batman shifts focus away from Jim Gordon somewhat and onto Bruce Wayne, now living a quiet, humble life without a trace of spandex. There's a lot to like in this issue as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo reveal more about Bruce's miraculous return and flesh out new villain Mr. Bloom. Unfortunately, Gordon himself is somewhat diminished as a result.

Batman Writer Discusses the Surprising Fate of Bruce Wayne

Snyder's dialogue is what truly shines in this issue. For example, the opening conversation between Gordon and Bruce is great about showcasing the altered nature of their relationship. Neither character knows the other in the way they once did, and now Gordon is the dominant force in their relationship. Even better is the interaction between Alfred and Superman in a later scene, as Alfred explains exactly how Bruce survived his apparent death in Endgame and why the man that confronted Joker isn't the same as the man who returned. Snyder really nails the fatherly love Alfred holds for Bruce and his steadfast desire not to drag Bruce back into darkness.
