Amazon's A Very English Scandal Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is the full series review for all three episodes of A Very English Scandal, which premieres on Amazon's Instant Video platform Friday, June 29th.

The series aired already in the U.K. on BBC One.

Using a delightfully bustling pace, and featuring a magnificently sociopathic Hugh Grant, Amazon's new miniseries, A Very English Scandal, playfully recounts the Jeremy Thorpe sex and attempted murder scandal from early 1970s England - with Grant as Thorpe and Ben Whishaw as Thorpe's scorned and unstable once-upon-a-time lover, Norman Scott.

Written by Russell T Davies (Doctor Who, Queer as Folk), adapted from John Preston's book, and directed by Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Queen), A Very English Scandal adopts a jolly, fun "truth is stranger than fiction" approach to the proceedings, giving the entire tale a calm comedic sheen that borders, at times, on cracking apart the fourth wall. It's a devilishly enjoyable tone that's reminiscent of Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant!" - or even the Coens' Fargo, which adopted a similar tone despite presenting a fake "true story."

Call of Duty: WW2 - United Front DLC Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

All in all, Call of Duty: WW2’s United Front DLC feels experimental and exciting in some ways, while safer and dull in others. The changes to the Zombies mode dramatically shake up the formula and make it a high point worth visiting, but otherwise, the mostly underwhelming new maps aren’t breaking any new ground.

When I first played Call of Duty: WW2 at release, it felt like a bizarre omission to not visit Stalingrad as a multiplayer destination. Over the years I feel like I’ve fought battles on that field countless times, because as the largest conflict to take place in all of WW2, it’s always been a staple for shooters based on the war. United Front finally brings it back, and it’s the best of the three new maps.

The Crew 2 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

In a lot of ways, The Crew 2 feels more like a reboot of the first game than it does a simple sequel. The dramatic shift in tone is perhaps the key reason for this, though the fact that it’s taken a second swing at recreating the entire continental USA for the setting is another. I welcome the lighter approach to the campaign mode and the fun mix of new vehicle types and racing disciplines here, but it’s still a little rough around the edges and missing some surprising features.

A large amount of content has been added to this open-world race ’em up; most notably, aircraft and boats, plus whole suites of events for each. A lot has been made of The Crew 2’s ‘Fast Fav’ system, which allows us to magically change between vehicles on the fly. It admittedly works really well and I can’t imagine playing without it. The novelty of flying miles above the Earth, turning into a boat and spearing into the ocean does wear off, but there’s no denying it’s tremendously conducive to moving around the world, exploring, and creating ridiculous emergent gameplay moments.

Update 2: Inside is now available for Nintendo Switch. Netflix's Kiss Me First Is Ready Player One Without the Fun

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The following is an advance review for the debut episode of Kiss Me First, which premieres its first season on Netflix U.S. this Friday, June 29th.

Season 1 already aired in its entirety in the U.K. this past spring.

In a modestly maudlin mix of genres, Kiss Me First - from Skins co-creator Bryan Elsley, and from the book by Lottie Moggach - offers up a very moody low-key slice of cyberspace. Part Black Mirror, Part Ready Player One, Part...well, you get the idea (the list of ingredients is long), Kiss Me First properly and subtly blends aspects of various sources and influences and aptly sets its own tone and atmosphere.

That being said, it's also quite stagnant at times, offering up little more than silence and the aforementioned "mood" for us to absorb and process. Kiss Me First is definitely one of those shows that you learn more and more about as it goes on, as it starts with a barrel full of secrets and purposeful deception in order to give you that blankest entry point possible. The viewer is basically tasked with discovering what the story is, what "all of this is really about," and the grinding aspect here is - well - time. It takes a while for the series to reveal itself, though those astute enough can certainly spot the twists coming.

The Corsair Strafe RGB MK.2 (See it on Amazon) is an updated version of the mechanical keyboard of the same name released a couple of years ago. Unlike the also recently-updated K70 RGB MK.2 though, Corsair has added quite a few high-end features to this formerly midrange keyboard, nudging it upwards in both price and features. Since the revised K70 RGB MK.2 is now just $20 more than the Strafe, is there enough to really separate these two models now? I put this keyboard through its paces to find out.

Marvel Pushes The Sentry in New Directions

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The Sentry is a great character that Marvel has never seemed quite to know what to do with over the long term. He's a character very much out of sync with the rest of the Marvel Universe, which is both the source of his appeal and storytelling woes. But that's not stopping Marvel from giving the Golden Guardian of Good his own ongoing series at long last, one that's shaping up to be a solid addition to the Fresh Start lineup.

The new series builds on the character's recent return in Donny Cates and Gabriel Hernandez Walta's brief Doctor Strange run. All readers really need to know, however, is that Robert Reynolds is back, and Strange has given him a tool that allows him to unleash his incredible power inside an artificial world so that neither the Sentry nor his alter ego the Void need ever reappear in the real world. That changes the tone of Bob's struggles now. He's no longer a tortured hero fighting to keep his demons at bay, but a man who once wielded the powers of a god now forced to eke out a humble existence.

Ant-Man and The Wasp Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Ant-Man and The Wasp doesn’t have as much style as James Gunn’s Guardians movies or Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, but returning director Peyton Reed has honed in on everything that made the first Ant-Man so charming and doubled down on it, from the offbeat humor to the zippy energy radiating from every scene. It’s a smidge longer than its predecessor, but somehow feels tighter and more confident in its execution -- a rare feat for a sequel.

Let’s get this out of the way up front: If you’re hoping that Ant-Man and The Wasp will answer all your lingering Infinity War questions, you’d better temper your expectations now. It’s no spoiler to admit - since Marvel’s official plot synopsis already did - that the sprightly sequel to Marvel’s 2015 heist movie takes place in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, with our diminutive hero Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) under house arrest following his shenanigans in Germany with Cap and the gang.

Woman Walks Ahead Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Woman Walks Ahead is now playing exclusively on DIRECTV and opens in theaters June 29.

Biopics need to be balanced to be considered good. Dramatized moments shouldn’t completely overshadow factual events and vice versa. Ideally, a writer/director will want to present as much truth as possible without sedating the audience. This means liberties will be taken to liven up the narrative. While this is an acceptable practice, writers should be careful when choosing which parts of history to change.

This was my sentiment after watching Woman Walks Ahead, the biographical drama about an activist named Caroline Weldon. Looking to pursue a career in art, her story opens with a trip to Dakota in hopes of painting a Sioux Indian faction leader named Sitting Bull. Weldon had painted prominent figures before and believed that his painting could offer up a beautiful truth, changing how some Americans saw him and his people. The only problem with this idea was that most didn’t want to see him as anything but a murderer; her arrival came after several bloody battles. Hard feelings ran rampant despite the cease fire, prompting many of the white settlers to distrust and/or outright hate her. Not only that, but the Dawes Act of 1877 – an ordinance that allowed the US government to abolish tribal land ownership before assimilation occurred – was soon to be signed. Weldon’s timing was awful.

Joker and Catwoman Make a Great Team

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The funny thing about this latest Batman storyline is that Batman himself is the least important player. The Dark Knight spent the bulk of issue #48 as a silent, passive partner to a scene-stealing Joker. This time around, Batman has almost no presence at all, with Tom King and Mikel Janin focusing all of their attention on the dynamic between Joker and Catwoman. And it quickly becomes apparent that a comic titled "Batman" doesn't actually need Batman to thrive.

Playing a match in Mario Tennis Aces is like challenging someone to an arm wrestle and a staring contest simultaneously. FLCL: Progressive Episode 3 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

“Skipping Stones”, aka the obligatory beach episode, continues FLCL: Progressive’s trend of mysterious metaphors and unfinished sentences, giving us plenty to think about moving forward. It's a much slower starter than the previous few episodes, but does end on one of Progressive’s most intriguing scenes yet which shows our unlikely hero Ide finally taking on a life of his own.

With an assumed truce between Jinyu and Haruko, the two tag along on the student’s beach trip, which Haruko sees as a perfect excuse to flirt with Ide and the boys. Luckily Progressive doesn’t milk the fanservice too much before moving onto the next plot point where we meet Mori’s girlfriend Aiko (and her emotional support plant). The group cycles through various beach festivities in what amounts to a pretty harmless but boring montage. Again, a slow start which doesn’t suit FLCL well.

Supergirl Season 3 Finale Review: "Battles Lost and Won"

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Just a quick note to start things off - since I haven’t been doing weekly Supergirl reviews for the past couple months, this review is going to function as a combined season finale review and a look back at Season 3 as a whole.

In some ways, Supergirl ended its third season in very familiar territory. Once again, Kara and her allies confronted a super-powered enemy intent on destroying humanity and claiming Earth for itself. I’ve made this joke before, but it must be really terrible to live in the Arrowverse and know that the arrival of May means some epic disaster is waiting right around the corner. The somewhat formulaic end to the season is a sign that the series never quite capitalized on the Reign conflict in the way it should. However, there were enough strong character moments throughout this episode to avoid a totally predictable and bland finish.

GLOW's Second Season is Even Better Than the First

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is an advance, non-spoiler review for all 10 episodes of GLOW: Season 2 on Netflix - premiering Friday, June 29th.

Netflix's Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are back for another triumphant team-up, trying to capitalize on their cult following as a local San Fernando Valley '80s TV oddity and transform into something thriving and meaningful.

And while this bodacious band of misfits, hailing from all walks of life, attempts to turn a shoddy and lovable wrestling/variety act into a successful venture, the series itself continues its wonderful winning streak as a totally addictive, utterly consumable, dramedy.

GLOW is one of Netflix's best offerings.

It's not overlong (10 episodes at around 30 mins each), it doesn't feel like one long movie (there are actual memorable, themed episodes), and it makes for a dynamite binge. Though serialized, GLOW isn't cruelly so. It's all one story, but it's framed and presented in polished, palatable package so that you want to keep eating the popcorn, watching the next chapter. And tonally, it's terrific. Sometimes the comedy carries the weight, sometimes the drama, and they're never forced to wrestle for full control. Like an actual well-booked wrestling card, there's something for everyone.

Marvel's Luke Cage Season 2 Struggles Without Cottonmouth

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is an advanced SPOILER-FREE review of Marvel's Luke Cage Season 2. You can stream all 13 episodes on June 22 on Netflix.

Months after Luke (Mike Colter) took down Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali) and Diamondback (Erik LaRay Harvey), the titular hero returns as a Harlem icon, making appearances on ESPN and various social media platforms. He’s a superhero without a mask, which is a nice change from some other heroes that hide in the shadows, like Daredevil and The Punisher.

While the premise of a friendly neighborhood Luke Cage sounds promising, sadly, the story’s execution is uninspired, and sometimes downright boring. Series creator Cheo Hodari Coker is still searching for that villainous magic he found in Ali’s portrayal of Cottonmouth last season.

Tag Review: A Largely Entertaining Comedy

Every few years there’s a comedy that plays with a convention in a fresh and entertaining way. Buddy movie, bromantic comedy, whatever label you want to slap on it, Tag is very comfortable with what it is and it does what it does well.

There are many things about Tag that remind me of the first time I saw The Hangover and that’s not just because it shares a cast member, Ed Helms. The bonds between friends, the struggle to maintain them and how men deal with changes in their group dynamic and personal circumstances are all themes that are played out in both movies. Additionally, both movies have taken these core elements and presented them in a unique and refreshing way, finding their own voice and just having the courage to go for it.

Thor: New Comic, Same Quality

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

It's becoming slightly ridiculous just how many times Marvel has relaunched Jason Aaron's ongoing Thor saga. It started as Thor: God of Thunder, then became Thor, then briefly changed to Thors during Secret Wars, then transformed into The Mighty Thor. And now we've circled right back around to Thor again. But no matter how often the title on the cover changes, the quality has remained consistent. If you were reading and enjoying The Mighty Thor before, you'll want to be following Thor now.

Aaron himself has stuck around for the Fresh Start relaunch, but a great deal else has changed with the series. The most obvious being that the Odinson has reclaimed the mantle of Thor and resumed defending Midgard while the victorious Jane Foster finally has a chance to recuperate. But if happier, Thor is still not quite whole. Mjolnir is MIA. Asgardia has been destroyed, and the Bifrost along with it. And even as the gods are at a low ebb, Malekith's War of realms rages on unchecked.

Superfly Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

In Gordon Parks, Jr.'s 1972 blaxploitation classic Super Fly, Harlem was portrayed as a dingy and lived-in place cluttered with trash and populated with both gentleman criminals and those of the not-so-savory variety. In it, Ron O'Neal played a cocaine dealer named Youngblood Priest who commanded Harlem's attention with his glowering intensity and, of course, his excellent tweed suits. In 1972, crime was a low-down and dirty activity that involved dirty alleyways, dirty darkened back alley dealings with dirty cops, and brutal karate beatings. It was all punctuated by Curtis Mayfield's funk/soul music, providing one of the best movie soundtracks in history.

The world of crime in Director X's 2018 update – now sporting a title that is, like everything else, more streamlined – is a decidedly more posh, comfortable and opulent place. In the post-millennial crime world of the new Superfly, now set in Atlanta, the dangerous gangs wear matching all-white costumes, criminal hangouts have come to resemble strip clubs by way of Cirque du Soleil, and Youngblood Priest is smoother, cooler, better dressed, and more unflappable than ever; a Zen master in pleather. And although the plot of Superfly is a sneeze of loose ends, and some of the film's basic logic doesn't add up – Priest is depicted as world-weary and experienced, even though actor Trevor Jackson is only 21 – it still was wise to approach a remake of Super Fly as an exercise in cucumber-cool style. It's not the sort of film that will blow you away, but you may like hanging out with Priest.

Unravel Two Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

I remember the first Unravel more for its adorable protagonist and lush setting than as a puzzle platformer. But Unravel 2 goes a long way to change that, tabling a more accomplished, and at times demanding, platforming experience with puzzles to match.

The most immediately-noticeable change is the addition of a second playable Yarny. The entire story mode can still be tackled solo, however, and I did so without ever feeling at a major disadvantage. When playing alone, Unravel Two allows you to quickly entwine both Yarnys to create a single multi-coloured character, meaning platforming sections only have to be tackled once, thankfully. It’s an elegant little mechanic that works well, even if the image of their spliced beings is ever so slightly harrowing. That said, there are a couple of sections that I can imagine being slightly easier or more elegant with a partner, but it never felt mandatory.

Incredibles 2 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

After a 14-year hiatus, the heroic Parr family returns in a sequel that, in many ways, surpasses the outstanding original. Disney-Pixar’s Incredibles 2 excels in its ability to balance the important and emotional familial aspects of the story with the exciting superhero antics moviegoers have come to expect in the era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But while there are plenty of moments of action-packed spectacle, writer/director Brad Bird doesn’t rely on them to replace the most important movie-making ingredient: heart.

Bird’s skillful balancing act employs a role-reversal within the Parr family, which previously centered on Bob/Mr. Incredible’s (Craig T. Nelson) desire to return to glory after a ban on superheroes forced the family into hiding and suburban blandness. Incredibles 2 cleverly establishes its place in continuity by opening with a thrilling battle against The Underminer (Cheers’ John Ratzenberger), who appeared to terrorize local citizens moments before the credits rolled on the original movie. But even the heroics of defeating Syndrome and The Underminer don’t change the law, and the Parrs are effectively returned to square one, facing a mundane future. With Bob still out of a job, that leaves him and Helen/Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), in desperate need of income.

Jurassic Park Evolution Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

What could possibly go wrong when managing an island amusement park full of giant, man-eating monsters? Lots of things, though in this case they’re not the kind that lead to good gameplay. With so few interesting decisions and so much mundane busywork going on in Jurassic World Evolution, there is no need to, as Samuel L. Jackson once famously recommended, “hold onto your butts.”

Jeff Goldblum lends his recognizable-anywhere voice to some of the narration as Dr. Ian Malcolm, and he’s clearly having a lot of fun with the pronunciation of the islands’ names – just wait until you hear him say “Isla Matanceros” in the opening flyover cutscene – but otherwise it very much sounds like his first read-through of the script. Opposite him are a handful of Jurassic World actors, including Bryce Dallas Howard and B.D. Wong, and then there’s someone voicing Chris Pratt's character who doesn’t even seem to be making an attempt at impersonating him.

Sense8 Finale Review: A Messy But Moving Farewell

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This review contains spoilers for Netflix's feature-length Sense8 series finale, "Amor Vincit Omnia."

"Pain binds us together better than anything else," Jonas tells Will early in Sense8’s two and a half hour finale. While true in some regard, it feels like one of the last remaining figures from a failed sensate cluster only makes it halfway to the full truth Sense8 is pushing. As secrets unfold in the finale, we learn the deeper reasons of various betrayals within Jonas’ cluster, which just further illustrates the difference between them and Will’s group of telepathically connected individuals.

Their eight-way relationship has been built on empathy and love since the start, and thus those ideals became the prerogative the show has always put forward. Whether it be Nomi struggling for her family’s acceptance, Kala struggling with the expectations of her culture, or any of the other individual sensates’ woes, their shared pain has always led them to a wider, more encompassing acceptance of each others’ love. One of the many truisms of this show is that it’s love that makes pain worth enduring. After all, it was love from this show’s fans that resurrected Sense8 from the dead so it could conclude.

This is an advance review for the first episode of Condor, which premieres Wednesday, June 6th, on AT&T's Audience Network.

Adapting a time-capsule classic is usually always a thankless task. Not only do the new team of creators and writers have to retrofit and remodel the story to make the it politically and socially relevant to the modern era, but they'll most likely fall short, if not way short, of making something truly notable or worthwhile. Because not only will your project get compared to the original, and the zeitgeist-y lightning it captured in a bottle, but it will also get held up to everything the original movie influenced over the years - which now, funnily enough, includes your new project.

Justice League #1 Revives the Franchise

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

DC may have recently dropped the "DC Rebirth" moniker, but the goal remains the same. The company is still working to restore what's been lost and rebuild those crucial character relationships that define the DC Universe. Justice League #1 feels like an important new step in that ongoing process. This issue may be crammed full of crazy plot twists and big ideas, but none of that would matter if readers didn't care about the team writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Cheung have assembled.

It's clear the new Justice League is drawing more inspiration than usual from the animated realm. The new team roster is basically the same as the one seen in the Justice League animated series, while the series is also debuting a Super Friends-worthy take on the Legion of Doom. But while those elements make for obvious selling points, never does it feel like this issue is trying to ride on the coattails of what's come before. Modeling the new League after the animated team merely gives this issue a starting point as it attempts to establish a team with a real sense of history and purpose behind it. Too often in recent years, the Justice League has lacked that personal spark. With the New 52 decimating so much continuity, you have a group of heroes who hang out more because it's expected of them than because they feel like a legitimate family.
