Grease Live! Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Well damn, that was a lot of fun.

I haven’t watched any of the NBC live musicals whose success no doubt influenced FOX to decide to do Grease live… or, excuse me, Grease Live! But I’d heard about some of the knocks they took for certain cheesy aspects and clunkiness and it was impossible to wonder if Grease might be in store for the same… even as the show itself (a personal musical favorite of mine – I was raised on the soundtrack, thanks to two much older siblings who were obsessed with it) is kind of impossible to truly ruin, due to its ever-catchy songs.

And the first few minutes of Grease Live did take some getting used to as far as the innate cheap feeling (we’re talking visually here) that usually accompanies live scripted TV, simply due to the circumstances. But director Thomas Kail (Broadway’s recent smash hit, Hamilton) was able to give the entire show the energy and fun it needed to sustain a three-hour run time, and Grease got better and better as it went along.

The Venture Bros.: Season 6 Premiere Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The two-and-a-half-year gap between the fifth and six seasons of The Venture Bros. is, unfortunately, par for the course at this point. There's a newfound sense of urgency with this new season, though. The Venture Bros. has acquired stiff new competition in the form of shows like Bojack Horseman and Rick and Morty, and this new season needs to prove that Team Venture still has what it takes to stand out. Luckily, it's clear from the Season 6 premiere that Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer haven't lost their edge.

It's remarkable how smoothly this episode transitions from the events of "All This and Gargantua-2" into the new status quo. It helps that the show has an unusually clean slate given how many running plot threads were wrapped up last time. "Hostile Makeover" picked up essentially right where that special left off. Dr. venture just inherited his brother's vast fortune and company, Dr Killinger has assumed control of the Guild of Calamitous Intent, and the Monarch is now homeless and living in his dilapidated childhood home. Everyone's fortunes have shifted, but as always, failure is the common thread that links every character together.

The Killer Instinct World Cup will return in 2017

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

It's been a wild weekend of action for Killer Instinct. The inaugural Killer Instinct World Cup proved to be far bigger than even fans of the game could have anticipated, thanks to some great production and two days of intense matches. Iron Galaxy agrees, which is why the event will be back for an encore.

Just prior to the Grand Finals, Killer Instinct and the World Cup organizers confirmed that the event would return next year. The stakes will likely be higher, but even if it's on par with this year's event, there will be a lot of money and pride on the line. This year's event offered a $30,000 prize pool, with $10,000 going out to the winner. That winner was fighting game specialist and Killer Instinct expert RicoSuave, who defeated Team Ultra Arcade's My God in convincing fashion.

There's plenty that's about to change in Killer Instinct that should make next year's KI World Cup worth paying attention to. For one thing, the game is about to undergo some major changes for Season 3, which is also set to introduce some new characters (one huge cameo among them). On top of that, an entirely new player base may be ready to enter fray, since KI's PC version is weeks away from debuting.

We'll have the full Grand Finals match available to view as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, there are only a few more hours left to pick up the KI Ultra Combo Edition from Games With Gold.

Galavant: Season 2 Finale Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is our review of the second part of Galavant's Season 2 finale. Click here for our review of the first part.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The first part of Galavant's Season 2 finale ended on a cliffhanger. It's funny because this isn't a show with high stakes so no one in the audience really expected death. Still, the pause in the courtyard gave the story a few beats to breathe and gave the characters time to sink into their reunions. But first, there was a fantastic flashback.

Going back to Richard's youth gave Sonnyboy Skelton the opportunity to come back as young Gareth, and he couldn't be more perfect. He's like a miniature Vinnie Jones. Because of his performance and the dialogue, I spent most of the first minute of the episode laughing so hard I nearly cried. The song balanced that out by being earnest and melancholy with Alfie Simmons and Timothy Omundson both adding depth and emotion with their performances.

Galavant: "Battle of the Three Armies" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is our review of the first part of Galavant's Season 2 finale. Click here for our review of the second part.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

It's a sad Sunday because the Season 2 finale of Galavant is here. However, there is a bright side, and it's called the recap song. I've been looking forward to Ben Presley's Jester catching us up on the events of the season. Honestly, if Galavant was a full 22-episode per season series, I'd happily watch an entire clips show with the Jester narrating in song. It could work. Anyway, Presley killed it and they made it extra funny by putting a sort of "A Knight's Tale" twist on it. I'm not positive if it was intentional, but I couldn't help but think of Paul Bettany's Chaucer in that film.

Pokken Tournament burns bright with Chandelure

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Over in Japan, the Nico Nico Takaigi Pokken Tournament competition just wrapped up. Following the finals, Pokken Tournament/Tekken franchise creator Katsuhirio Harada and Masaaki Hoshino offered the captive audience a special surprise in the form of the game's newest character. And it's the most bizarre entry to date, as it's the chandalier-looking Fire/Ghost-type, Chandelure.

Kotaku first deduced this reveal a couple of weeks ago, but it became official earlier today. Harada offered up the reveal and the new trailer (courtesy of Shoryuken), which shows its bizarre attack patterns. As a Fire-type, Chandelure can dole out fire damage, while using its unique shape to strike with four appendages and with cartwheels. It can also use Minimize to evade an opponent's strikes.

Chandelure is set to hit the arcade version of Pokken Tournament on February 9. It'll also be ready for the full version of the game that's set to hit Wii U on March 18.

Ohio State defeats UC Santa Barbara to win the 3rd TeSPA Collegiate Hearthstone Championship

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

The 3rd annual TeSPA Collegiate Hearthstone Championship is officially in the books. The college tournament kicked off back in September and the final rounds were held during this weekend's event over at PAX South. This was the first time the team format was used and it led to some intense matches, albeit with a slightly slower pace than normal.

The final four for this year's tournament was UC Santa Barbara, Laval University, University of Texas - Arlington, and Ohio State University. The final match came down to UC Santa Barbara and Ohio State, with both teams able to push it to a fifth an deciding round. In the end, THE Ohio State University and their Mage was able to take advantage of some iffy Druid play from the UC Santa Barbara team to come out on top. Don't leave that Flamewaker alive, fellas!

What are the other big takeaways from today's action? Well, Ohio State was able to prove that some of the meta's most powerful decks (Secret Paladin and Ramp Druid) are entirely beatable, thanks to some solid strategy and the luck of the draw. The much-maligned Mysterious Challenger, in particular, stood no chance against a strong combination of Flamewaker, Ragnaros the Firelord, and the Arcane Missiles spell.

As the winning team, the Ohio State University kids have won a $100,000 scholarship, which should come in handy, since all three team members are first-year freshmen. Catch the full final day of action in the video below.

PSA: Watch out for these tricky Rogues in The Division Closed Beta

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

The Division Beta is in full swing, and since it has been extended until Tuesday we wanted to take a moment and let you guys know about a few things that have been plaguing the game's PVP-oriented area, The Dark Zone.

If you've spent any amount of time in the Dark Zone then you've probably either been killed by a Rogue, or gone Rogue yourself to score some sweet new gear. Either way, these are things that both new and experienced players should be aware of.

The first thing kind of falls on bad game design for the beta when it comes down to it. But beware of rogue players near the boundary lines of the Dark Zone. It has become increasingly popular to "go rogue", kill a few players, and then escape into the "OUT OF BOUNDS" area where players are automatically transferred into the nearest safe zone where they can wait out their bounty in safety. It's a bit of a cheat and it's pretty sad that players are already resorting to this kind of behavior in a beta, but it's something you should watch out for.

The other thing we really want to mention is something called "Rogue Tagging", which is where a player tags you with a single shot from their weapon, just enough to get your attention but not go rogue. What they want you to do in turn is whip around and lay into them, making yourself rogue in the process so they can kill you and get the bounty. This is a tactic being used widely across the game, and it's something you should all be aware of if you're planning on spending more of your time in New York's Dark Zone this weekend.

That's all the intel we've got for you right now, Agent. What are you waiting for? New York isn't going to save itself.

The Division Beta extended until Tuesday February 2; More invites sent out

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

For those who don't know, the Division beta has been in full effect since Friday of last week. Earlier in the weekend we reported that the beta servers were already almost filled to capacity, but it looks like Ubisoft has managed to pull a few more servers in from the wild as the publisher has announced via the official forums that the beta will be extended until Tuesday, February 2 at 12PM CET/6AM EST/3AM PST.

They also announced via the same post that they would be looking to let more players into the beta, while still maintaining a smooth and positive experience for everyone. If you signed up for the waitlist you've got another chance at getting a beta code, while any users who pre-ordered the game, and have yet to receive access will also begin to receive keys today.

This is great news for those looking to try Ubisoft's open-world shooter before it hits store shelves in March of this year. We'll have our impressions of the beta up after the fact, so be sure to keep an eye out to see what we think of this early look at Ubisoft's next big game.

You can check out the full official forum post and join the conversation on Ubisoft's website.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: "The War for Dimension X" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

So far, the undisputed big bads of Season 4 have been the Triceratons, but in a season where the name of the game is Space Travel, it was only a matter of time before the Kraang came back into the picture -- specifically the Utroms -- and this week's episode definitely made their latest appearance count.

The aptly titled "War for Dimension X" also featured the return of Mona Lisa and Commander Sal, who interestingly tried to form an alliance with the Kraang. (As the old saying goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.) And while the Salamandrians' capture was inevitable, their presence here definitely added to the already-impressive scale of this storyline.

Killer Instinct teases a Halo character for Season 3

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

It's been a very busy day for Killer Instinct, what with Iron Galaxy revealing the game's neweest character and also revealing an entire phone book-length list of changes set to come to the game for Season 3. So it's safe to walk away and just enjoy the rest of Killer Instinct World Cup, right? Certainly no more announcements for the day, right?

Oh, you are so wrong, you pitiful creature.

Earlier tonight, Iron Galaxy posted what looks to be the most delicious Killer Instinct tease yet. Yes, even tastier than the eventual Battletoads cameo. This tease appears to be pointing to another new character, one from Microsoft's biggest gaming franchise.

It's only an all-too-short 18-second tease, but it looks like someone from the Halo universe is joining the fight. And from the looks of that familiar-looking energy sword, it's likely that someone is the Arbiter. Season 3 is set to kick off in March, so hopefully, the answers are coming sooner than later.

Super Smash Bros. completes its roster with Bayonetta and Corrin next week

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Nintendo has been uploading a few new videos on its UK YouTube channel, but hidden in those videos are a few items of note. In particular, Super Smash Bros. has been quiet about an exact date for Corrin and Bayonetta's arrival into the game. That is, until now. A pair of new videos have been uploaded and they point to a February 4 release date.

The two video below show Bayonetta and Corin going one-on-one, each showing their respective new abilities. The second video also shows off the new Bayonetta-themed Umbra Tower stage.

While new videos are perfectly fine, once again, the big news piece is that a February 4 release date appears to be confirmed for the new characters, along with the final Mii Fighter costumes. While that is a UK release date, the timing should be similar, if not the exact same for North America. To get an idea of what to expect, check out the videos below.

Final Fantasy 15 Active Time Report reveals stealth system, new enemy details, and more

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Final Fantasy XV is inching closer to release, so Square Enix is offering the latest progress report on what players can expect from the game. Game Director Hajime Tabata and Marketing Manager Akio Ofuji both appeared for the latest Active Time Report, which includes what's being billed as the 2nd and possibly final progress report for the upcoming RPG.

The presentation kicked off with a recap of what's been revealed to this point, including many of the notes touched on during the previous Active Time Report at Tokyo Game Show. One thing to note is that magic appears to have more than an effect on battle. Magic will physically affect the conditions on the battlefield. For example, Fire spells will ignite grassy areas, as well as foes. Another example will see Blizzard spells affect the entire environment and corresponding enemies within that vicinity.

Tabata and Ofuji also went into more detail about the Nlflheim Empire, which acts as the game's antagonistic force. New art was revealed, showing off its militaristic might that includes both modern and futuristic weapons and vessels. Tabata explains that after the start of the story, the Niflheim Empire has conquered most of the game's world, with only the Kingdom of Lucis remaining as the sole indepndent nation remaining. While Lucis is powered by the forces of magic, Niflheim is run by industry and machines. As players face off against Niflheim, they'll run across legions of Magitek Troopers, which the empire has used to conquer the world's many nations through sheer numbers.

Tabata describes the story as a clash between magic and machines. The empire is led by Iedolas Aldercapt, who is described by Tabata as a "ruthless supremacist." While Iedolas is semi-retired from active conflict, empire operations are run by his Chancellor, a fedora-wearing gentleman named Ardyn Izunia. The empire's military is run by the ruthless General Glauca, who commands the thousands of Magitek Infantry. There's also a female dragoon serving under Glauca named Aranea Highwind, who commands the empire's mercenary branch, with her oficial title the commander of its 87th Airborne Unit. As a human dragoon, she is an expert at aerial combat.

Tabata also offered a glimpse at the current state of combat in the game, which will include stealth elements through something called the Blade-Warp ability. This was demonstrated through footage of a Niflheim Base infiltration mission, which doubled as a demonstration of the new Luminous engine. The party snuck around a base filled with Magitek Troopers and a massive mech unit. To proceed, characters would sneak behind unsuspecting troopers and use the Blade-Warp for stealth kills. Allies can likewise mark enemies with warp points, which will allow players to warp to that target. Soon enough, they were all spotted, which triggered a full-on battle phase that took on a more traditional action-RPG look. While this might seem like Metal Gear Solid-style infiltration to stay hidden, the objective is actually to stay in the shadows just long enough to comandeer the enemy's artillery and use it to destroy the base. This particular sequence concluded with a clash with Aranea, who took matters into her own hands.

Following the battle footage, Tabata cited some improvements since Episode Duscae, pointing at the game's camera work, in particular. The weapon swirling effect that was first hinted at in the early Final Fantasy Versus XIII footage has also returned after semingly disappearing from Episode Duscae. Tabata noted that he was waiting to refine this mechanic before fully implementing it into the game. The game has also received a UI overhaul, complete with a button configuration change. The four buttons are now mapped to "Attack, defend, jump, and warp," with additional commands becoming available as characters and allies level up. Not only will additional skills be made available, but Tabata is noting that this will also affect combat AI, as well.

With all that, there's a playable tech demo that's on its way, with Tabata stating that more information will be revealed at an upcoming March event. Yes, this is the same March event where a release date was promised. That will happen on March 30 at 7PM PT. There's a lot to take in with the latest Active Time Report. Catch the whole presentation in the video below.

Black Sails: "XX" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Black Sails spared no expense for its twentieth chapter, taking Flint and his devoted crew into the heart of a brutal ship-wrecking tempest. All to avoid capture by Hornigold, with the added tension of Flint's crew actually having been offered full pardons for their crimes, but riding into the storm anyhow because of Flint's sweeping speech of madness. One that Silver even soon regretted getting caught under the spell of.

We've seen sea battles, land battles, and sea-to-land conflict, but this was Sails' first big experience with destructive weather. And it was pretty damn impressive. Watching Flint sacrifice his own men, in that particular regretful-yet-cold manner that we know only he can project. But then also watching him tie himself to the wheel of the ship during the most dangerous part of the journey while his crew took shelter below deck. So there was a lot of give and take here. And seeing Billy react to things helped layer the process even more given what Flint once did to him.

Final Fantasy 14 will feel 'The Gears of Change' in February

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

While PAX South appears to be the big event of the weekend, Square Enix (specifically, the team behind Final Fantasy XIV) ventured to Kagoshima, Japan for a special event. The team had some news about Final Fantasy XIV, revealing new details about the game's upcoming Patch 3.2, which will release under the banner "The Gears of Change."

One of the biggest changes coming will affect the PvP side of the game. A new PvP instance called "The Feast" will debut, requiring players be at a minimum of Level 60 with item level syncs at 150 for 4v4 (one tank, one melee DPS, one ranged DPS, and one healer) or 8v8 (two tanks, two melee DPS, two ranged DPS, and two healers) competition. This is a follow-up to the Wolves' Den content, with the objective to steal the opposing team's medals by defeating them in combat. The amount of medals dropped will lessen if the same person is killed repeatedly, so teams will need to try and defeat each team member as evenly as possible. Each team will start with 100 medals and whoever has more at the end of the match will be declared the winner. Players will be aided by a limit break-style action called the Adrenalin Rush, Supply Boxes filled with helpful buffs, and a Culling Time effect that buffs players that have not been defeated for a certain amount of time. A player that has too many medals will also get a physical damage debuff, so even out that medal count! The first Feast season will debut alongside the new patch and will change out every 3.5 months, with special rewards issued at the end of the season.

Other additions include a pair of new instanced dungeons called the Antitower and The Lost City of Amdapor (which will be classified as a Hard dungeon), a new mentor system for experienced players to help out newcomers, and adjustments to jobs and Exploratory Missions. More information is coming soon about this patch, particularly for North American and European players, given that the live Producer's Note was conducted only in Japanese. In the meantime, visit the Square Enix forums for more detailed information. Look for The Gears of Change to arrive on February 23.

Killer Instinct Season 3 rebalance patch includes stagger, flip outs, no unbreakables, and more

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Killer Instinct is preparing for Season 3, with one classic character and one Battletoad already revealed. But as mentioned earlier today, Iron Galaxy is taking a sledgehammer to the game's characters for a massive balance overhaul prior to the start of Season 3.

"We want to encourage player creativity in playstyles, setups, and combos," lead combat designer Adam Heart said prior to the balance showcase on Maximillian's Twitch channel. "When you guys find something that's really cool, we want it to be practical, we want you to be able to use it in matches, and we want there to be lots of stuff to be able to find with every characters. I want to be able to look at four different Sabrewulf players and know who they are just by watching them playe, because their styles are so unique. Of course, we want to adjust the existing character balance against the Season 3 roster, while also giving players who are going to stick with Season 1 or Season 2 characters new tools to explore. Does that mean new toys for every character? You're damn right it does!"

The concept of risk and reward is also being pushed with individual characters and the stream did not disappoint. Each and every character were given significant nerfs, but also some notable buffs. While PC players may not feel the sting, given that they'll be seeing Killer Instinct for the first time in March, this could potentially rock the Xbox One version as players currently know it.

In addition to character changes, there are few system changes set to be introduced across the board, as well. That includes a new 'Stagger' system, which will operate similarly to the current Wall Splat system. Certain attacks can make opponents stagger briefly, offering a short window for follow-ups or throws. There is no early escape for this, but tech throws are still functional, as long as your character isn't locked out. Also, juggles have been reworked slightly, as certain attacks will instead make opponents flip around and land on their feet, offering additional follow-up opportunities. These flip out moves vary by character. Also, and most importantly to players of the current game, unbreakable combos have been removed entirely. Even if there are no breakable moves over the course of the combo, the Combo Breaker window moves to the combo's ender move. That's a small sample of what's coming, but those are some serious changes to the KI game as a whole and create a more intriguing and more level playing field.

While the Season 3 balance notes for individual characters have been posted in full over on the Ultra Combo forums, Heart does note that everything is subject to change. These changes are currently in place over at demo stations across both the Killer Instinct World Cup and PAX South and certain changes are subject to be scrapped, depending on player feedback.

The full rebalance demonstration can also be found below, courtesy of Maximillian's Twitch channel. It's over an hour long, to give an idea of just how many changes are being made. And of course, as a final reminder, Xbox Live Gold members have one last chance to pick up the Killer Instinct Ultra Combo Edition for free as part of Games With Gold this weekend. Not only will it better prepare players for Season 3 in March, but those characters can also be brought over to the PC version when it releases.

Meet Moving Hazard, the zombie game where you command the zombies

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Moving Hazard is a competive team-based FPS game set fifty years after the fall of mankind. Zombies have overtaken the world and military city-states vie for control of important resources in a harsh apocalyptic world. But this isn't just any old zombie game of normal standards. Instead developers Psyop Games and IllFonic have decided to spice things up by allowing players to control the zombies using special grenades and items.

Right now the game features six different maps, a variety of gamemodes like Team Deathmatch, Scavenger, King of the Hill, and more. The website also lists a single-player scenario and a cooperative horde-based mode are among Moving Hazard's offerings. The game has been in development for over a year now and is expected to release sometime early this year in Early Access.

You can see some early alpha gameplay in the video below and visit the game's website to find out more info regarding this up and coming first-person shooter.

Thanks PC Gamer for the headsup.

Some XCOM 2 mods you can play from day one

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

For those who have been living in the dark, we recently learned that Long War Studios, the modders responsible for some of the most popular XCOM mods, has been brought onboard to help create mods for the launch of the next chapter in the XCOM series. So far we haven't been able to find out much information about what type of mods XCOM modders Long War Studios are working on.  Today Eurogamer managed to get an inside look at just a few of the mods that we'll be able to play when XCOM 2 releases on February 5.

According to a back and forth between Eurogamer writer Chris Bratt and Long War's lead designer John Lumpkin, one of the first mods available to players is a new breed of weapons, submachineguns. According to a statement by Lumpkin, "They won't do as much damage and they don't have as much ammunition as an assault rifle, but a soldier that carries them is faster and also harder to detect." Of course these items don't come off without any penaltie. We don't have all the details quite yet, but I'm susre the trade-offs will be something to take into consideration if Long War's work on previous XCOM titles is anything to take note of.

The other two mods mentioned during Bratt and Lumpkin's conversation include a bunch of new leadership perks for certain XCOM soldiers, though it does limit one leader to each squad, as well as a new enemy type that they have titled the Muton Centurion. The basic premise behind these mods really seems to be looking to allow players to pick and choose, easily customizing their own campaigns to their own likings. It's a really neat idea to have the team working so closely with the developers, and we're looking forward to seeing what other nifty ideas come out of the Long War studio.

Lumpkin also mentioned that right now they don't have any solid plans to release a fullscale Long War mod... not yet at least.

Kim Wu will bring the spirit of the dragon to Killer Instinct Season 3

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

The Killer Instinct World Cup rolls on this weekend with a special panel that focused on what's ahead for the revamped fighter. Iron Galaxy revealed a slew of character tweaks for the various Season 2 characters (look for that recap shortly), but the studio ended the presentation with a special glimpse at what's coming in Season 3. And like Season 2 before it, one of the first new characters will be an old friend.

Kim Wu makes her triumphant return from Killer Instinct 2, but with some key differences that are obvious from the outset. In fact, in her own words, "I've got a freakin' dragon!" That precedes a transformation into a powerful warrior, as the trailer tells her brief story of being a chosen savior of the world. Kim Wu can be seen unleashing her own hellish combos, aided by a special pair of nunchuks that are enchanted by the spirit of an ancient dragon. Those nunchuks also feed into her various special moves, which includes a massive projectile.

Kim Wu will be the first of the Season 3 characters to debut later this year. That'll be something for the Xbox One fanbase to look forward to, but also something special for the PC crowd, as Season 3 will hit that platform in March, as well. And as a reminder, if you're looking to get the full Season 1 roster on Xbox One, this is your last weekend to do so!

Oculus Kickstarter backers must claim free Rift by January 31

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Those who were eager enough to back Oculus on kickstarter all those many years ago were pleased to hear that they were going to be given a free Oculus Rift upon the device's consumer release. But like any good thing, deadlines are approaching, and according to a tweet by Brendan Iribe, the CEO of Oculus, you're going to want to make sure you claim that free Rift by tomorrow, January 31 at 11:59PM EST.

That means you have roughly twenty-four hours to claim your free entrance into the world of consumer virtual reality, or you'll need to shell out some more cash in the name of Oculus Rift to get in on the preorders. It's a pretty common thing to have deadlines, so we hope none of you have missed out on this little reward for your loyalty in the early days of virtual reality.

Virtual reality is such an interesting and advancing field, but recently one of our guest writers, Morgan Rehnberg, added his opinion to the mix. Check out why VR shouldn't leave disabled gamers behind.

The Witness Complete Puzzle Walkthrough and Guide: Audio Logs, Briefcases

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

This guide will feature the solutions for each and every puzzle in The Witness. Since the game does feature a pretty complex amount of puzzles, we will be including several images for the solutions to help guide you along the way. Also, since the main point of this game is to solve the puzzles, we suggest trying to complete them on your own before looking at this guide. Otherwise you risk spoiling the entire experience.

Also, since there isn't any real way to check your progression, and there isn't a "set way" to do things, our guide may feature sections in a different order than you played them in. Don't stress out. The most important part of this game is solving the puzzles. The order doesn't always matter.

Some Things to Know Before You Get Started

  • Don't bash your head against the wall. If you're stuck and you just can't figure something out, walk away. Take a breather and play with your dog or cat to ease your frustrations. We promise the puzzles aren't going anywhere.
  • Feel like you're moving slow? Sprint using SHIFT/L2/LEFT TRIGGER.
  • Paying attention to your surroundings is extremely important in The Witness as the background behind puzzles can hold the solution you're looking for.
  • This isn't an FPS game centered around mindless running and gunning. Take time to try to think about things before simply attempting to make quick answers. Sometimes taking a few seconds to think things through can save you a lot of headache.
  • If you can't figure out where to go next, just look around for wires leading to something. Many of these puzzles connect with each other, so you'll always want to be aware of what connections your solutions are making.

Also... It should go without saying, but SPOILERS AHEAD.

Area 1: The Garden, The Ramparts, and the Chamber Hidden in the Tower

Upon loading into the game for the first time you'll find yourself staring at a door at the end of a long tunnel. Head down the tunnel and solve the puzzle on the door to get the hang of the mechanics. It's a super simple puzzle, so don't worry about getting frustrated just yet.

Once you've solved the first puzzle, head out the tunnel to encounter a second door with a puzzle. Solve this simple puzzle to unlock the first area of the game, the Garden.

Once you climb the stairs from the second door, head straight in front of you to the panel at the end of the gravel path. Solve this puzzle and it should light up the black cable running from the panel.

Follow the cable to find another panel. Solve it and continue the process.

Once you solve this third puzzle in the tower, follow the cable to a large laser-like gate with a puzzle to the right of it. The puzzle is blocked off by three panels, one of which you've just removed.

From here you need to follow the other two cables to the corresponding panels and activate them. First follow the cable that leads back towards the area where you first entered. You'll need to head around the wall to the right of the door, where you should spot the entrance to one of the Garden's four towers. Head inside to find the puzzle. You should notice two cables running from it. Make a mental note of that, you'll need to remember it in a second.

With this puzzle solved, and the panel removed from the gate lock, head back to the gate and follow the third and final cable to the tower directly opposite of the one you just explored.

Once this puzzle has been solved the gate to the Garden will open.

But wait. Don't go running off just yet. Instead, turn around and head back to the puzzle with two cables running from it and solve it using the method listed below.

Once you've realigned the power from the puzzle above, head out the gate and down the path. As you walk keep an eye out for a large opening between a rock and a bush to your left. When you spot it, head up the grassy knoll and follow the wall around to find a break in the ramparts. Now climb onto the top of the wall and turn left, following it around until you reach a dead end with this audio log located across from it.

With the first audio log in your collection, turn around and follow the wall around, past the break in the ramparts until you pass through the tower where you realigned the power. You should spot a pathway to the left just outside the tower that leads to a flat rooftop with a set of pillows near one edge. You can snag the second audio log of the game from this location.

Once you have both the audio logs, climb down from the wall using the crumbled section and turn left, following the walls in a counterclockwise motion until you pass through an open gate. If for some reason the gate isn't open, head back into the Garden and realign the power on the puzzle with two cables. You should know the one I'm talking about by now.

Continue through the gate and around the walls until you run into an elegant wooden door with a puzzle on it.

With the puzzle solved, head inside the small chamber to find a third audio log resting on the ground at the base of the tree.

There is also a fun little puzzle on the ground in this chamber, but solving it isn't a huge priority.

With the area explored, turn and locate the unopened door with a puzzle on it.

Once you've solved the puzzle, head outside to find yourself back on the path leading out of the Garden.

Area 2: Blue and Green Panels, the Bunker,  and the Pink Orchard Puzzles

Now continue down the path, ignoring the bunker door on the left, until you spot a group of blue panels in an empty field.

These are tutorial style panels that will teach you new ways to solve puzzles, so you'll want to give them a try.

Hint: Seperate the black and white squares.

We've included the solutions just in case you need a little help.

With the blue panels solved, turn around and locate the entrance to the broken down building directly across the path from the blue panels. Head inside to find a series of green panels with more tutorial puzzles.

Hint: Use the line to cover all the hexagons.

We've included the solutions just in case you need a little help.

Once you've completed the green panels it's time to finish up this little section and put your newly earned knowledge to the test. Head back up the path towards the Garden, this time turning down the path that leads to the door to the bunker. Solve the puzzle on the door using the tricks you just learned.

Once inside the bunker you'll find a large box. Open it using the simple puzzle on the backside, and then memorize the image you find inside. We suggest taking a screenshot so you don't forget.

Now head out the bunker and back down the path to the blue panels. Ignore them this time around and continue straight off the path and up to the pink orchard of trees on the hill. You'll find a new puzzle here, which will begin a new series of puzzles.

Obviously you should be getting the hang of following the wires and things by now, so we won't be pointing that out as much anymore.

Hint: Look at where the apple is located on the tree.

Once you complete the puzzle, head on to the next.

Now head to the next panel and solve it too.

Things change up a little bit with this next puzzle.

Hint: Look at where the branch is broken.

Now follow the cable and solve the next panel.

With the last panel solved, turn around and follow the cable to an opened gate that leads to a neat little painter's area and this stunning view of the upcoming areas.

Area 3: COMING SOON

This guide is a work in progress. We will be adding new content to it as we complete the puzzles. Check back regularly for new updates and solutions.
