In-Depth: Consoles in China

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

After fourteen years, China has lifted its ban on video game consoles. Microsoft is the first of the major console manufacturers to capitalize on the new market, having recently launched its Xbox One in the region. However, China's gaming culture has undergone a radical shift in the absence of consoles, raising questions about how this segment of the video game industry will fair in China. In our first Shacknews In-Depth, we take a closer look at what led to the ban, how video games in China have flourished in a different way, and the opportunities and perils of jumping into the market.

Behind the Ban | Analysts Unsure | Huge in China | Pervasive Piracy | A Look from Inside

Behind the Ban (Steven Wong)

Although video game arcades had become something of an endangered species in the United States and Europe in 2000, they were still a thriving in China and other parts of Asia - booming, in fact. However, they were often illegal and poorly managed, which caused people generally regarded them as a threat to the growth and development of their youth. This "threat" prompted several branches of the government, which included the Ministry of Culture, the State Economic and Trade Commission, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Industry and IT, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the General Administration of Customs and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, to band together in a crusade to end the corrosive influence of video game arcades. Many believe that the ban is a result of vocal parents complaining about how video games would waste away the minds of their children, which might also be true enough to fuel a campaign to regulate them.

That year, three months after the PlayStation 2 released in Japan, a bill titled "Feedback regarding the launch of special operation on video game arcades" was proposed and passed. The measure was meant to regulate the operation of arcades, but its wording states:

"..the manufacturing and selling of any electronic gaming equipment plus its parts and accessories headed to China are stopped immediately. No company or individual can partake in the manufacturing and selling of electronic gaming equipment plus its parts and accessories headed to China.

With the exception of processing trade, the import of electronic game equipment plus its parts and accessories through other forms of trade is strictly limited.

Perhaps it was an unintended side effect, but the bill aimed at putting an end to illegal arcades effectively stopped sales of foreign made video game consoles.

To be clear, the ban had nothing to do with the epidemic of video game addiction that would sweep the nation and prompt the government to set up reformative boot camps. Nor does it share any of the historic and political roots that led to the ban of Japanese consumer products in South Korea, although the outcomes are very similar. China's ban was specifically geared towards protecting its youth from going to dangerous venues and being exposed to unhealthy content. But Chinese gamers would not be suppressed, even as the ban stayed in effect for fourteen years. The result of ban caused a meteoric rise in PC gaming. Although the ban does include language that prohibits internet cafes from running businesses related to video games, that portion was rarely enforced. As a result, video game revenues in China topped over 13 billion dollars in 2013, with the PC in the lead and a fast growing mobile sector behind it.

Unsurprisingly, consoles did not figure into the revenue report, but it's not for lack of trying. In 2004, Sony tried to work around the "strictly limited" portion of the ban with a low-scale launch of the PlayStation 2, but it only managed to release it in two out of the five intended cities. Hitting Shanghai and Guangzhou, Sony's official statement referred to the system specifically as "the PlayStation 2 Computer Entertainment System," with the implied emphasis on "computer."

Even with this attempt to distance itself from being a video game console, the PS2 would see a number of different problems, the greatest of which being the China's auditing system. China's government must approve all media content to make sure they fall within strict guidelines, and much of the PS2's library failed to do so. The roadblocks didn't end there. High tariffs on imported foreign products made the PS2 considerably more expensive than ones picked up from the (largely un-policed) black market, which tied in to the country's long standing culture of software piracy. Although the PSP and PlayStation Vita never officially launched in China, they both had a healthy share of knockoff systems (such as the unabashed iReadyGo), and the real ones were quite popular on the black market.

That doesn't mean Sony was ready to give up. In June of 2012, Sony Computer Entertainment opened a headquarters at Guangdong Animation City as part of a government backed initiative in Guangzhou to help strengthen its local animation and gaming industry. A month later, Sony made a surprise appearance at Chinajoy in Shanghai, China's largest video game expo, after skipping it for four years. Around the same time, an outdated PlayStation 3 model quietly passed China's certification process, but was soon withdrawn by Sony after it was discovered.

Despite the setbacks Sony faced, Microsoft fared far worse. The closest foothold Microsoft managed to get in the Chinese market was in releasing the Kinect in September 2012. The caveat, however, was that there would be no Xbox 360 to go with it. China's Kinect launch was specifically meant for Windows PCs

That leaves Nintendo's brand of iQue consoles as the only success story out of the big three console manufacturers. Partnering with an American entrepreneur Dr. Wei Yen in 2003, Nintendo launched an inexpensive gaming console in China. It was essentially a version of the N64, with the processor built into the controller, and used rewritable cartridges for its games, which also plugged into the controller. In an effort to curb piracy, games could only be downloaded from iQue Depot stores, and each cartridge only had enough memory to hold one game at a time.

The console never really took off due to its inconvenience, but it soon reemerged with a focus on the handheld market. iQue now sells its branded version of the Nintendo 3DS XL, which is popular despite its library being limited to a handful of games mostly developed by Nintendo itself like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. Nintendo gets a pass because it develops relatively nonviolent games that are free of pornography and consistent with China's regulations and sense of morality. Although other countries might see violent 3DS games, they are conveniently filtered out for China. It might seem like a minor victory, but the iQue is among the few console systems that are openly sold in China. In 2008, Nintendo announced that the Wii would release in China, and the system was certified, but nothing ever became of it. However, similar to what Sony experienced, the console became very popular on the black market.

The ban on manufacturing arcade machines was lifted in 2009, but the ban on foreign-made video game consoles remained in effect.

In January 2014, after seeing the kind of revenue video games brought in, the Chinese government announced that it would temporarily lift the ban on gaming consoles. However, consoles could only be manufactured and sold in the Shanghai's Free Trade Zone, an area where economic reforms are put to the test. Additionally, games can only be sold after an inspection by China's cultural departments. Nintendo shares leapt by 10% in Tokyo following the announcement, Microsoft added 1%, and Sony remained flat.

There was a great deal of excitement in the months leading up to September, when the ban was scheduled to lift. Nintendo teased plans to develop a new low-cost console for emerging markets. Microsoft, partnered with Chinese company BesTV, ramped up by ordering 5 million Xbox Ones in preparation for its launch. A hiccup, three days before the Xbox One's anticipated September 23rd launch, caused a six day delay. Finally, on September 29, 2014, the Xbox One launched in China. It garnered 100,000 pre-orders despite a slim lineup of games, which might sound a bit low, but still far exceeded sales of the console in Japan. Reports speculate that Microsoft is hoping to reach one million sales in the following year. Those might be high expectations, given the hurdles the console still faces.

Obstacles include high prices that brought other attempts to bring consoles to China down. A base model Xbox One in China currently goes for 3,699 Yuan (about $605 US), a hundred dollars more than a base model with Kinect costs in the US. No one knows how successful an expensive console will be in the long run, especially since China's PC-centric gaming market largely takes place in pay-per-time internet cafes. Then there's the sales model in a country that is famous for pirating software and making cheap knock-offs of everything. It's largely for this reason that the most popular PC games in China are free-to-play with microtransactions.

Still, the biggest obstacle consoles face come from the censorship rules, which prohibit the following:

  • Gambling-related content or game features
  • Anything that violates China’s constitution
  • Anything that threatens China’s national unity, sovereignty, or territorial integrity.
  • Anything that harms the nation’s reputation, security, or interests.
  • Anything that instigates racial/ethnic hatred, or harms ethnic traditions and cultures.
  • Anything that violates China’s policy on religion by promoting cults or superstitions.
  • Anything that promotes or incites obscenity, drug use, violence, or gambling.
  • Anything that harms public ethics or China’s culture and traditions.
  • Anything that insults, slanders, or violates the rights of others.
  • Other content that violates the law

Don't expect Grand Theft Auto V to be approved anytime soon. Also, the ban suspension is temporary, with no indication of whether or not it will be reinstated. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo will have to live with that Sword of Damocles hanging over them.

Let's not forget about other cultural and social concerns. The high population density of China's urban areas means that living spaces tend to be small by American standards. In some cases, really small if console sales ever go beyond the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. Not exactly an ideal environment for Kinect motion controls or four-player get-togethers. Not to mention China's official recognition of video game addiction, and its ultra-competitive school system. Few parents may want to buy an expensive gaming console for their kid if they still believe that it will rot their minds and lead to decreased academic performance.

Coincidentally, publishers like Ubisoft are experimenting with a different strategy by developing Just Dance Now for mobile platforms, which circumvents many of the hurdles consoles still face and brings the popular series to previously inaccessible markets. Good for Ubisoft, but perhaps not so good for gaming consoles that rely heavily on third party development support for its games library.

Analysts Unsure (Steve Watts)

As the only console manufacturer to launch after the ban lifted, Microsoft is the de facto bellwether for the industry. Both Nintendo and Sony are surely watching Microsoft's push into the region to help determine if they should launch their own standard consoles. However, it raises the inevitable question: just what qualifies as success in China? The country has been a blind spot in the gaming industry for so long, it’s difficult to assess a successful launch, much less its sustained growth.

For example, Microsoft is reported to have sold 100,000 Xbox One units in its first week on the market, and the company aims to sell more than one million within its first year. This appears to easily beat its Japanese launch, which sold only 23,000 units in Japan during launch week and historically struggled during the Xbox 360 era. Despite the boast, analysts are split on just how good that number is.

"I think the 100,000 Xbox One units sold and the growing purchasing power of the Chinese middle class suggests that the market is conducive to--and interested in--dedicated video game consoles," EEDAR's Matthew Diener said. "It’s safe to say that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are well aware of the huge opportunities that exist in China’s predicted $18 billion gaming market.”

Gartner analyst Brian Blau is more hesitant to call the initial figure a success. "100,000 is not great," he said. "If it doesn’t go up from there, it’s terrible. If that’s the starting point and they’re slowly gaining momentum, it’s probably slow but okay."

"Factoring our tariffs, $30MM-$40MM in revenue is significant," said Jesse Divnich of Tilting Point. "Sure, 100,000 units is not the greatest number, but I don't think anyone expected figures higher than that."

Demographics muddy the results. China is one of the largest countries in the world, with an estimated 1.36 billion citizens. That's more than ten times Japan’s latest census data of 128 million. With ten times the audience, and absolutely no console competition, it only makes sense that Microsoft would see a larger number in China than Japan. That doesn’t necessarily mean it is more successful.

China’s heavier sales could also have an element of demographics. Japan has seen a sharp increase in its average age, while China is more evenly distributed. The age range between 20-40 is particularly skewed, as it’s one of the least populated demographics in Japan, and one of the most populated in China. The impact of that difference shouldn’t be understated in a medium primarily aimed at younger players.

However, young players might be hesitant to buy in China for purely financial reasons. As originally reported, a Hong Kong brokerage firm expressed doubts about a viable console market in Japan, after it found that most Chinese gamers earn less than 4,000 yuan ($634 USD) per month. Now that Xbox One has actually launched, it’s priced at approximately $600 without Kinect, and $700 with Kinect. That makes it well over a full month’s salary for the majority of the target audience.

“The system is clearly meant for the type of Chinese consumer who has a job at a big company, a salary, to afford a device like this,” said Blau. “That’s not the case for most Chinese consumers, so it’s going to have limited sales in the beginning.”

"There exist a market for home consoles in China, but it is not particularly big. Chinese consumers have a strong preference towards mobile and PC games that utilize the free-to-play business model," Divnich said. "The concept of spending $600 for a dedicated console and then spending an additional $30 for a game is foreign and certainly out of the price range for the majority of Chinese consumers.

"HD consoles will carve out a niche for themselves in China. Getting distribution and access in China for the consoles is definitely a worthwhile and profitable venture, but it will always be a small market compared to PC and mobile for the foreseeable future."

Microsoft does have the advantage, at least so far, of being the only option. The first-mover advantage can have a big impact in any region, and China has had a history of it continuing to have ripple effects for years to come.

“In the past, however, the first company into China enjoyed a sizable advantage over its competitors," Diener said. "The obvious example here is Kentucky Fried Chicken, which became the first foreign fast food company in China back in 1987. It’s grown at an unmatched pace thanks to the fact that it became synonymous with the concept of fast food to many Chinese consumers, and it was recently recognized by a BBC-commissioned study as the most powerful Western brand in China--well ahead of McDonald’s, which came in at #7.”

Analysts have also raised concerns about factors that aren't as influential in the United States or Japan. The first has helped shape the face of Chinese video games since the ban took place, and has had the ripple effect of influencing markets here as well.

“This prevalence of piracy, incidentally, is part of what drove the client-based F2P web game scene in China a decade or so ago," Diener said. "Developers realized that a traditional boxed game would be pirated within 24 hours of being released, and that their sales would plummet as a result. The F2P web game’s business model sidesteps this problem neatly, and keeps players’ money coming in to developers.

"Still, China’s been at the web game market for some time now and there’s a big push from developers--like Linekong – to transition away from web games to focus their development purely on F2P mobile titles. This isn’t a strong point in favor of consoles at face value, but what you can extrapolate from here is that Chinese gaming tastes are changing, and customers are looking for different experiences from the traditional Chinese-developed web game.”

Diener noted that consoles in China will also have to deal head-on with censorship, and that some games have already been held back because of it.

"As a result of this censorship, you’re seeing a lot of potential system sellers--Destiny, Titanfall, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare--absent from the Xbox One’s launch list in China due to their violent content. If console developers and publishers are banking on a release in the PRC, they’re going to have pay close attention to decisions made early in a game’s development and definitely plan with an eye toward China’s history of censorship.”

That may be why the launch line-up was severely slimmed from its original plans. While insiders claimed the launch was set to have 20 games in total, only 10 of them made launch day. Microsoft says it has more thna 70 "in the pipeline" for approval, but some more violent ones may not make the cut.

Huge in China (Ozzie Mejia)

Even despite these concerns, there's no denying the huge opportunity that awaits console makers by reaching out to China. While console sales remain strong across North America and Europe, the population of China is far too big to ignore, especially given the Chinese government continuing to relax their restrictions on gaming. Millions of people are prepared to discover console gaming for the first time. However, the biggest mistake that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo can make is to take the exact approach with China that they do with other territories.

Every culture seems to veer towards different types of games. If the ESA and a recent Wall Street Journal article is any indication, different regions tend to drift towards different genres. Likewise, China has a distinct taste in gaming, one that console makers would be wise to analyze before taking any drastic steps forward.

Arenanet is one major video game developer that took great caution in approaching the Chinese gaming market. Their most-recognized MMORPG, Guild Wars 2, launched in China in May. That wasn't a spur of the moment decision. Rather, the studio analyzed the region carefully, noting a uniquely different taste in games from any other region the developer previously catered to.

"Chinese players are savvy game consumers," said ArenaNet Senior Vice President of Global Business Randall Price. "They educate themselves about the hottest games out there, and they build really strong communities and relationships with their fellow players. However, what Western developers and publishers need to keep in mind is that there are differences in the way they enjoy games. Chinese players often want their games to provide great content direction. They want clarity about how to play, where to go and what to do. Developers should let them know what is in store for them - tell players about the incredible content they’re going to get to play, the epic boss battles coming up and the great rewards they’ll receive. You'll acquire more players with this strategy.

"It's true that Chinese players love online games and MMOs. Their culture is based around Internet cafes and PC games generally, and so that's what they play today. That doesn't mean consoles don't have an opportunity in China. The issues with console games are going to be the price point and the availability of great games. Will the consoles and games be too expensive in China given that players aren't used to paying large amounts to purchase games? Also, with all of the government regulation around bringing foreign games to China, will publishers be able to launch their best franchises there? Consoles will have to get over these hurdles in China to be successful."

Accessible cost is something Microsoft has likely had in mind for several months. In fact, it's easy to make the leap in logic that the eventual Chinese launch is part of the reason the Kinect sensor was eventually sent out to pasture. It isn't just to compete in the Xbox One's current markets, but a cheaper entry point would definitely help court the Chinese user and stand strong against the PlayStation 4 whenever it eventually arrives. China represents a clean slate for console makers. It's a chance to start fresh with a whole new market, but approaching them as if the have the same gaming taste as North America, Europe, or Japan would be folly. That's why research means a lot if any of them are going to succeed.

One thing's for sure, though. If Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo do succeed in the Chinese market, expect future AAA game development to change in a big way. The simple fact is that there's more money to go around in China and if the user base there grows, so will the influence. Guild Wars 2 is already offering somewhat of a glimpse into what's to come, noting that Chinese players are being taken into account when planning future content.

"For any game company going into China, you need to conduct extensive testing and research with players, and you need to be willing to let the results from those tests influence your development decisions," Price said. "We've certainly done that with Guild Wars 2, making adjustments and conscious decisions based on feedback from Chinese players in an effort to make the game as enjoyable as possible for them. We've now changed the development of the game to focus on global development, taking into account the needs of all of our markets including China in our planning."

However, there's still one area where console makers can falter and that's online infrastructure. With Chinese users dedicated to online gaming experiences, frequent outages will not be tolerated. Stability has grown to be a major weakness for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network over the past few years. If either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 are to thrive in this new market, it needs to dedicate its resources to keeping their services online more than ever. Issues like the recent PSN outage can no longer be the norm if any of these companies hope to win over this new audience. Instances like this will simply send Chinese users over to PC, where games like Guild Wars 2, Black Gold, and Age of Wushu are already filling their need for gaming fantasies.

Pervasive Piracy (Daniel Perez)

Picking an appropriate price and monetization strategies for the culture is also an important step to combat China's other major issue: piracy.

As long as gaming has been in the mainstream, piracy and plagiarism of video games has been an ongoing issue around the world, but especially in China. There are many theories as to why the region is flooded with pirated and bootlegged copies of games, but the spark that  really ignited video game piracy in China was the gap between the price of licensed software and the purchasing power of the Chinese people, or rather, lack thereof. For close to $15, Chinese consumers could purchase a licensed game while a pirated version of the same game would cost significantly cheaper.

Even though the living wage standard has since risen, which makes purchasing pirated or bootlegged versions of games unnecessary, these very games are flooding the market. It’s actually more difficult to purchase a licensed, legal copy of a video game than it is a pirated copy in China, and that’s due to a number of factors. These factors include Chinese consumers being used to having a “free lunch” of sorts and are now unwilling to spend the extra money to purchase a licensed game. The fact that the Chinese government has yet to crack down on game piracy has also lead to its continued growth.

So what are game developers to do in order to attempt to wrangle the Chinese market to potentially have some kind of income in the region? It seems many of them have gone the way of freemium games, which just so happened to take off originally in South Korea when it originated from the late 90s. Since its introduction, free-to-play games have been more prevalent in China as consumers in the region have been cultivated to adopt it more so than purchasing licensed games.

Publishers in the region have reportedly made over $9 billion in sales using free-to-play models, according to research firm Niko Partners. Around 10% of that figure can be attested to the rise of mobile in the region, which apparently is a larger piece of the free-to-play pie. Niko Partners also reveals there are approximately 192 million mobile gamers in China, while only 150 million play on PC. The rise of mobile gaming comes as no surprise since the region banned video game consoles up until early 2014, where it was finally lifted, and production quality within mobile gaming has improved substantially.

Even though the number of mobile gamers has dwarfed PC gaming, making money from those players has been much harder than developers would have guessed considering the raw numbers. In an interview with BBC News last year, The9’s Chris Shen says this is because “Chinese users are very used to getting games for free. They are very well educated on how to get software and games for free.”

This sentiment seems to be the real issue behind piracy in China as it’s come up time and time again. Consumers in the region just don’t feel the need to purchase legitimate pieces of software if they have bootleg or pirated versions of the same software readily available wherever they go. The only way this issue could even attempt to be resolved is if something drastic happens to bootleggers and software pirates in the region to stop them from having the upperhand over legitimate software developers and publishers. Developers going the freemium angle certainly helps, but it’ll only be a matter of time until bootleggers and pirates are able to offer their customers the same, or at least similar experiences.

Warner Bros. offers full refunds on Batman: Arkham Knight PC version through end of 2015

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

While Halloween has been a day for treats, a number of PC gamers have been on the wrong end of a trick from Warner Bros. and Rocksteady for over four months in the form of the Batman: Arkham Knight PC version. The game just recently came back to Steam, but it still appears to have some major troubles. Both Eurogamer and our own Chatty community have noticed things are amiss, particularly its 12GB RAM requirement for Windows 10. With a number of PC users still disenchanted, Warner Bros. has thrown up its hands and is ready to offer refunds.

"Until the end of 2015, we will be offering a full refund on Batman: Arkham Knight PC, regardless of how long you have played the product," reads the official Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment statement on Steam. "You can also return the Season Pass along with the main game (but not separately). For those of you that hold onto the game, we are going to continue to address the issues that we can fix and talk to you about the issues that we cannot fix."

Users that initially experienced trouble submitting refund requests are encouraged to try again, with Valve noting that an interior issue has been resolved.

Halloween 2015: Frozen Cortex celebrates with 'Pay 2 Lose' armor

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

The Halloween madness has even hit the gridiron, where developer Mode 7 is getting into the spirit with some new goodies for users. Here's the thing, though. Those British rapscallions are pretty cheeky when it comes to their Halloween content, which is why they're also offering a premium item fully intent on handicapping your players.

Appropriately enough, this content is called "Pay 2 Lose." When equipped, this armor severely hobbles your character's stats. Use it when it's time to take it easy on newer players or simply use it and crush them anyway, showing them what terrible players they are. The armor will cost $1, in case you're aching to give yourself a handicap.

There's also free content available, which includes a pair or robot faces for your squad and the Incredible Pumpkin Trophy. Those pieces of content are available right now.

Halloween 2015: H1Z1 adds pumpkin-headed zombies and more

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

If the zombie apocalypse has broken around the world, how can things possibly get any scarier? Daybreak Games is looking to answer that question with the latest Halloween event for H1Z1. The answer looks to involve scary costumes on top of the already-scary zombies. But this costume is no mere aesthetic feature, making this new zombie variant something to truly fear.

Players in Survival mode should beware of zombies with pumpkins on their heads. It is immune to projectiles, so emptying a clip into its fruity noggin will yield no effect. Only melee strikes will take it down, but even then, this is a tricky proposition. Killing a pumpkin-headed zombie will either grant players special loot or cast a curse upon them. The treat is its mask. The trick... let's not think about that.

Those in Battle Royale mode can find a scarecrow mask sprinkled into airdrop crates. Remember that crates are first-come, first-serve, so if you're looking to make a mad dash to grab a mask, remember that other players will have the same idea and will likely try and take you down to get to it themselves.

The H1Z1 Halloween event is running right now and is set to go until November 13.

Halloween 2015: Blade joins Marvel Heroes 2015 in time for Mystic Mayhem

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Before there was Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, or Marvel's The Avengers, Marvel's main big screen presence was a vampire hunter by the name of Blade. The hero first debuted in the 70s, but arguably was at his most popular when Wesley Snipes brought life to the character in the late 90s. Now he has arrived in Marvel Heroes 2015 and he's ready to start taking it to the undead for Halloween.

Blade's abilities are unique in that they take advantage of the Daywalker's human and vampire sides, but they also have a notable drawback. He'll often go into Bloodlust, which can only be controlled by injecting himself with an active ability called Serum. Injecting himself with the Serum will recover health and keep Blade in control, but if his bloodlust goes out of control, Blade will rapidly lose health until he's left with only 1 HP. Character builds will be especially important with this hero.

While Blade will be available all year, there are a few additions that are more "limited time" in scope. Mystic Mayhem returns, offering a 31 percent server-side boost to everything for today only, as well as trick-or-treat powerups, pumpkin and candy credit item drops, and Halloween Mystery Bags. During this event, the Demon Lord N'astirh seeks to bridge together the realms of Earth and Limbo, bringing its enemies onto the earthly plane. Players can attempt to stop his machinations by jumping into the Infernal Limbo Zone, as part of a new mission.

Players can also find a new limited-time Wolverine Symbiote costume, in which Logan is possessed by the Venom symbiote, and a new Team-Up character: Franken-Castle. Yes, Gazillion is well-aware of one of the sillier moments of the Punisher's history (and that's saying a lot) in which Frank Castle was maimed and dismembered by Wolverine's evil son and then pieced back together into a Frankenstein monster. This story happened, people! He did eventually get better.

The Halloween event will be active for a little while longer, but once it ends, be on the lookout for another big addition set to hit Marvel Heroes 2015: The Danger Room.

Warning: Full spoilers below.

The Zygons returned in this week’s episode of Doctor Who, “The Zygon Invasion.” Or rather, it turns out they never left! And that’s become a bit of a problem now for the Doctor, and the whole planet, actually.

Last seen in "The Day of the Doctor" (as we are reminded in the opening moments here), the Zygons struck a peace with Kate Stewart and UNIT after their attempted invasion of London in that episode. It seems the result of that truce was an agreement that allowed some 20 million Zygons to take up residency on Earth, disguised as ordinary humans via their shapeshifting (and budget-saving) natural abilities. But now, a rogue group of Zygons have decided that they want to live free in their natural form -- or die hard! Time to call in John McClane… or even better, Doctor Disco.

Halloween 2015: ARK: Survival Evolved becomes ARK: Fear Evolved

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Even the dinousaurs celebrate Halloween, as it turns out. Studio Wildcard is certainly about to do so with its first Halloween event for ARK: Survival Evolved. But how can the prehistoric era possibly celebrate a holiday centered around the dead when nothing has died yet? First off, that's not entirely true. There is a dead species of dinosaur out there, one called the DodoRex.

The DodoRex is a dangerous undead creature, often flanked by other dinosaur zombies, because yes, even dinosaurs have zombies. Players will have to watch out for those, as well as reanimated Skelesaurs that are roaming the world. While the world has become more dangerous, it's also become filled with new loot, like scarecrows filled with thatch, Jack-o-Lanterns, costumes, and other loot drops. However, if the idea of undead dinos intrigues you, the Zomdodos are tameable.

ARK: Fear Evolved is set to run through this Wednesday.

Halloween 2015: Team Fortress 2 launches Scream Fortress VII

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Are you staying in this Halloween to help give out candy to the trick-or-treaters of the neighborhood? If so, you'll probably be looking for some games to help pass the time. Shacknews is going to take today to offer up a few suggestions, starting off with one that we didn't quite expect to see: Team Fortress 2's annual Scream Fortress.

Readers are probably asking, "But Ozzie, I thought Valve said they were definitely not doing a Scream Fortress this year." Plans have apparently changed, with this year's Halloween-themed update featuring four community maps redesigned with the holiday in mind. Players also have a chance to earn previous Halloween items they might have missed by completing Merasmissions, which requires completing a few tasks for the spirit of the sorcerer.

And of course, as promised, all of the previous Scream Fortress maps are back in the rotation, as well. The news hit earlier this week, just as Mannpower Mode finally came out of beta. There's still about a week left to enjoy Scream Fortress, so jump in while you can.

Z Nation: "The Collector" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

There was some buzz about “The Collector” prior to the start of the season because it features a guest appearance by A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin. The premise of a man who collected unique zombie specimens was intriguing, and I have to say the final product ended up being absolutely exceptional. Last week I mentioned the show had been spinning its wheels with meaningful moments being lost in what was starting to feel like monotony. Well, “The Collector” is a refreshing and fun story with a great villain and some great moments.

Army of Darkness Collector's Edition Blu-ray Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

There have been a truly ridiculous amount of DVD and Blu-ray releases for the Evil Dead series, Army of Darkness included. So it’s understandable that a fan would say, “Wait, you want me to get this movie again!?” when hearing a new version of any of these films is out - and perhaps be extra cautious and skeptical noting the release is obviously tied to the debut of Ash vs Army of Darkness. But leave it to Scream Factory to make it worth your while, putting out a terrific new “Collector’s Edition” of Army of Darkness this week that truly feels like the definitive home video release of the film.

Blunt Talk: Season 1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for Blunt Talk: Season 1 follow.

After watching him dabble in comedy for years through special appearances and guest-spots, Patrick Stewart takes center stage as troubled but well-meaning political pundit Walter Blunt in Starz’s great new comedy, Blunt Talk. Developed by Bored to Death’s Jonathan Ames and produced by Family Guy’s Seth McFarlane, Blunt Talk is a character-centric comedy that carries over all of the best elements of Ames’ previous show. It frequently walks the line between pure absurdity and satire without forgetting that its characters think and feel like the rest of us.

This was an exceptionally strong debut season. Naturally, Walter was front and center. Though “I Seem to Be Running Out of Dreams for Myself” seemed to position the show as the story of Walter falling from the public’s grace after an embarrassing scandal, Blunt Talk more or less moved on from this very quickly. Instead of focusing on the damage done to Walter’s career (which appeared to be minimal), it instead explored how these events force him to reevaluate his personal relationships. We see him strive to be a better father, a better boss, a better friend, and a better lover. He succeeds in some and fails in many, but the desire for change is real and is what makes him so endearing as a character.

Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 2 - Assembly Required Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Rather than building on its promising debut, Episode 2 of Minecraft: Story Mode stumbles. Called Assembly Required, it still has all of Episode 1’s flaws, while introducing a few new ones of its own. Most of the humor and heart that balanced out the premiere’s weaker elements and kept it enjoyable are sadly also absent. Combine all this with a distressingly short running time and the end result is a brief, forgettable adventure that feels of little consequence.

At the end of Episode 1, the stakes are made clear and the stage has been set. Jesse and his friends must reunite the legendary (or are they?) heroes The Order of the Stone to save the world from destruction. The episode ends with a trademark Telltale choice that had me scratching my chin in consideration: should I travel with one friend to recruit the brainy Order engineer Ellegaard, or go with another to find the Order’s “griefer,” Magnus?

Marvel's Jessica Jones: Episode 1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Note: This is a spoiler-free review of the first episode of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which screened at New York Comic Con earlier this month. The review and score are for the first episode only – we’ll have reviews of all 13 episodes and a full season review going up after the series debuts on November 20th.

The debut of the great Daredevil series on Netflix earlier this year opened a new door for Marvel into darker, more violent territory than their films, or ABC/network series, have gone and Jessica Jones proves that the company (and their owners at Disney) are willing to go even further. Based on the character from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos’ excellent comic book Alias, Jessica Jones stands out as a decidedly mature project, which immediately lets you know this is really not a show meant for kids.

WWE 2K16 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Wrestling games have been lost in a foggy region between arcade and simulation for well over a decade, but last year, WWE 2K15 took a big risk by pushing further into simulation territory than ever before. Despite how divisive this decision proved to be, WWE 2K16 doubles down on that, and it’s all the better for it. I’m used to thinking about resource management and move spacing when I play fighting games, but not in a wrestling game. 2K16 has me thinking that way, and it rewards me for it, and despite the fact that it’s still missing some features I love, that kept me coming back bout after bout.

Developers Yukes and Visual Concepts were on the right track last year when they added a stamina system and a chain wrestling system to create a greater sense of pace, and they’ve built on those successes beautifully.

Insomniac Games has released a two-minute video showcasing what Clank himself is capable of sans Ratchet as he makes his way across pathways flanked by lava, makes short work of some enemy bots, and basically proves he can still hold his own even among annoying moving box platforming areas.

Ratchet & Clank is slated for a Spring 2016 release for PlayStation 4.

The 100: Season 2 Blu-ray Review

If you've been waiting to see the second season of The 100, now's your chance. Earlier this month, Season 2 arrived on DVD, along with an MOD Blu-ray release shortly after. On top of that, this weekend -- on Saturday, October 31st -- Season 2 will also arrive on Netflix, joining Season 1, and giving those who haven't seen any of this great show an opportunity to go full binge.

Initially, Season 2 was to only have a DVD release, but thankfully, it seems Warner Bros. heard the fans complaining about the lack of Blu-ray. Watch Lara Croft make her mark on history in the latest Rise of the Tomb Raider trailer

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Lara Croft is on what looks (and feels, if my 45 minutes with the game last night are any indication) like one of the most frustrating journeys ever to discover the secret of immortality in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Frustrating for Lara, anyway. I had a blast.

Get this: Her family thinks she's nuts, but she's going to go and continue her father's research despite what anyone else thinks, because she's Lara Croft. And she doesn't have time for your opinion.

The latest Rise of the Tomb Raider trailer features footage from the first hour or so of the game, following Lara as the story gets underway. Accompanied by the dulcet tones of Karen 0 of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lara traverses a snowy mountain, comes face to face with a shadowy organization, and shows off impossibly shiny, glossy hair despite being plunged into mud, freezing water, and pelted with snow. Grab a blanket and be really thankful it exists, because it looks super cold where she is.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is slated for release on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 10, with PS4 and PC versions coming Q1 2016.

CreativeForge Games has announced it’s pulling back the reins on the release of Hard West as the game will now launch on November 18.

When the game releases, it should be as good as it can be.”

To make up for its two-week delay, CreativeForge Games has released a two new trailers of Hard West. The first is an 8-minute gameplay video that takes a look at The Asylum mission. The second is a new release date announcement video, which nicely sums up the reason for its delay.

Google celebrates Halloween with adorable candy-collecting minigame

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Google has launched a special Google Doodle to celebrate Halloween that has players fighting in an epic online battle to see who can collect the most candy.

You play as one of four global witch teams as you make your way through a level filled with floating candy. In order to collect the candy, you’ll need to either tap on the space bar or click your mouse to have your witch ascend. The game offers a similar game mechanic to Flappy Bird, although there aren’t as many obstacles in your way.

Your witch will come across three candy types, each of which offers a specific point multiplier to your grand total. At the end of the stage, your witch will drop her candy into their colored pot, which will then be compared with the score of other teams around the world.

This year’s Halloween Google Doodle is an adorable take on the holiday, and we hope you take a moment out of your day to add some points to Team Blue.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

From George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead to Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead, zombies - reanimated corpses who want nothing more than to eat soft and squishy living humans - have shuffled their way into popular culture. We've seen everything from over-the-top gore-fests to bleak, character-driven stories involving the hungry waves of the undead. Some movies have even turned the zombie apocalypse - which is a seriously horrifying scenario - into hilarious comedies. Now, director Christopher Landon's Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is the latest film attempting to have fun with swarms of flesh-eating corpses.

As you can tell by the title, this one's all about a group of scouts who find themselves right in the middle of a zombie outbreak. Three high schoolers -- Ben (Tye Sheridan), Carter (Logan Miller), and Augie (Joey Morgan) -- are on a camping trip to celebrate Augie getting his latest patch. Even though Augie is passionate about being a scout, Ben and Carter really want to quit, and once Augie falls asleep, they're going to sneak away so they can check out the seniors' party - a party which is, of course, way more elaborate than like, 99.9% of actual high school parties. As Ben and Carter drive away and Augie's left on his own, their townsfolk are rapidly turned into zombies. It's not long before the duo bumps into Denise (Sarah Dumont), a cocktail waitress at a strip club who's also a badass with a shotgun, and they all attempt to save everyone who's left alive from the zombies.

Heroes Reborn: "June 13th - Part One" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Heroes Reborn delivered a massive twist in "June 13th - Part 1," with a cliffhanger ending promising even more surprises next week.

Spoilers from the seventh episode of Heroes Reborn continue below.

The big surprise in Heroes Reborn's trip to the past proved to be about Claire -- though, sadly, it wasn't that she was actually alive and Hayden Panettiere returned to the show. No, Claire is really dead but -- twist! -- she died giving birth to twins.

The second that was revealed, it was obvious who they were: Malina and Tommy (aka Nathan), the two characters Heroes Reborn has been reminding us again and again are here to save the world. To hide them from Erica and Renautas, Hiro takes them back in time to 1999 so their powers will manifest the year after the Odessa attack (and the year after their birth/time they turn 16 -- time travel can be so confusing).

When the film opens, Jane is in full-on hermit mode. Following a crushing defeat several years earlier, she decided to go clean and sober, move out to the mountains and throw pottery. Burnt Review

During the movie Burnt, there's a scene between Bradley Cooper's rockstar chef Adam Jones and his protege/love interest at a Burger King. As Adam happily bites into a Whopper, he asks his skeptical apprentice why she doesn't like fast-food hamburgers. After she lists all the problems with the processed ingredients and the food's presentation, Adam stops her to say the only thing wrong with Burger King is that it's consistent, which spells "death" for any successful restaurant. And that's pretty much my opinion of Burnt. It's not the typical storyline or stock characters that are specifically the drawbacks (although those don't help); it's that it feels like almost every other tale-of-redemption story, with no unique qualities of its own.

Hemlock Grove: Series Finale Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: this review contains full spoilers for the final episode of Hemlock Grove. You can also check out my spoiler-free review of the season as a whole.

If Hemlock Grove's third season didn't quite escape the hurdles that have plagued the show from the beginning, it certainly made a lot of strides in this final batch of episodes. The series finale was very fitting in that regard. Despite some lingering problems, "Brian's Song" ended the show on a mostly tragic note and ensured that every character received the ending they deserved.

Luckily, the focused remained on the rivalry between Roman and Peter, despite the former being seemingly killed by the latter in the previous episode. Given how integral their roller coaster of a friendship has been to the show, it would be a shame if Peter's "death" were the last word on the matter. This episode built up a fair amount of suspense as it maneuvered the two against one another. The actual showdown was pretty brief, but that might be just as well given how poor the show's CG effects are. At times it looked less like Bill Skarsgård was wrestling with a giant werewolf than simply flailing about in empty space.

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Note: this is a largely spoiler-free review of Hemlock Grove's third and final season.Click here for a spoiler-filled review of the final episode of Hemlock Grove

Beneath all the gore and sex and general campy weirdness, Hemlock Grove is a show about people who look like monsters on the outside slowly becoming monsters on the inside. That's very evident in the show's third and final season, which debuted on Netflix last week. This is by far the darkest and most depressing season of the three. And maybe because of that added darkness, it's also the best. As flawed as Hemlock Grove still is, at least it goes out on a high note.

Outlast 2 offers a 'twisted journey' into the human mind's dark secrets in fall 2016

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Red Barrel Games has announce Outlast 2 is currently in development and is scheduled to release in fall 2016.

Outlast 2 is being developed for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and is described as a “twisted new journey into the depths of the human mind and its dark secrets.”

A teaser trailer was released promoting Outlast 2, and it appears the game will cause even more psychological trauma than the previous game. “No conflict is ever black and white,” the video’s description reads. “But once the dust has settled, the victors get to decide who was right and who was wrong. Who is good and who is evil. Human nature pushes us to extremes of violence and depravity, which we then justify by divine inspiration and a promise of paradise to come. Horror rises from desperation and blind faith. OUTLAST 2 will test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do.”

September 11 VR experience 08:46 tells a story of an office worker in the North Tower

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

We’ve experienced and reported on some interesting VR experiences in the past. We recently played a game where two players work together to defuse a bomb, and would like to get our hands into some alien anatomy in the upcoming Surgeon Simulator VR game. One VR experience we think we can safely do without is this one that has players experiencing the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 from the perspective of office workers inside the North Tower.

08:46 was developed by the six-member development studio, 846 Studios. The project took it three months to develop in collaboration with two actors for both voice and motion capturing. As you can see from the introduction video below, you’ll work as an office employee in the North Tower, which was the first tower to be hit on September 11th.

The VR experience was released on September 11, 2015, although we just caught wind of it today. Since we haven’t tried it out for ourselves, we don’t know just how far the experience goes, although there’s a screenshot on the official website that shows people making their way through a dark corridor with portions of the ceiling collapsed.

If you want to try it out for yourself, 08:46 is available to download. Just make sure you know what you’re getting into prior to trying it out.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes demo now available on Nintendo eShop

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes released on the Nintendo 3DS family of systems last week, but if you’ve been on the fence about the game, Nintendo has released a demo today that may change your mind.

The demo for Tri Force Heroes allows players to team up with two friends to take on a dungeon via local play. Each player will need to have their own copy of the demo, so Download Play and single-player won’t be available. A total of three costumes will be available to wear: Hero’s Tunic, Kokiri Clothes, and Legendary Dress.

If you don’t have anyone to play with, Nintendo is allowing those who download the demo the opportunity to play online co-op, but it’s during the following specific dates and times:

  • Oct. 30: 3-5 p.m. PT
  • Oct. 31: 3-5 p.m. PT
  • Nov. 1: 3-5 p.m. PT

NieR: Automata announced for PlayStation 4

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Square Enix teased a new NieR game would be announced this fall, and today, the publisher has finally announced NieR: Automata is currently in development by Platinum Games exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

NieR: Automata tells the story of the human race being drive from the earth after invaders from another world attack without warning. The humans are forced to take refuge on the moon where they develop an army of android soldiers to fight back against the ongoing threat: the machines. Their advances are slow, so humans create a new breed of android infantry, called the YoRHa squad, to hopefully take care of the mechanical threat once and for all.

Square Enix has released a new gameplay trailer for NieR: Automata. For a game that’s considered to be a work in progress, it looks really polished as the action looks fast and fierce.

Black Magick #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

No Halloween would be complete without a spooky new release, a bill Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott aim to fill with Black Magick #1. The latest debut to hit Image Comics' ever fruitful stable, Black Magick makes an instant impression with its murky musings and strikingly bleak aesthetic. While the debut leaves a few threads feeling left a bit too close to the vest, the resulting read still impresses with its engaging lead and pore-worthy art.

The opening pages of issue #1 are at once moody, Scott's ink soaked panels crafting an immediate sense of unease. It's a familiar sort of setup, yet just when you think you know what comes next, Rucka's story pulls an immediate and humorous U-turn, offering something decidedly different. This transition proves both a boon and a hindrance for the issue as a whole, as while there's a definite uniqueness to the read, the depths of said uniqueness remain almost frustratingly out of sight.

South Park: "Tweek x Craig" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

It's a tale as old as time: Boy meets boy, boy doesn't like boy, boy and boy are made out to be gay, so they stage a breakup to get the Asian-American students to stop drawing yaoi of them. Classic, right?

Well, as it turns out, it's not totally unrealistic. In fact, it came to my attention earlier this week that Tweek and Craig yaoi has apparently been going on for years. (If I were to guess, it probably started around South Park: Season 3, following the debut of the similarly titled "Tweek vs. Craig.") How it took Matt and Trey this long to exploit this fanon (which again I stress is actually a thing) is beyond me, but I'm so very glad they did, because it resulted one of the funniest episodes of South Park for me in recent memory -- definitely this season.

American Horror Story: "Devil's Night" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Through sheer madcap lunacy, American Horror Story: Hotel managed to tick up considerably this week with "Devil's Night" - an episode that goofily focused on the best part of the series so far. That being Evan Peters' Mr. March and his absolute adoration and respect for ghastly murder.

Here we'd meet, as March put it so eloquently, the "Mount Rushmore of Murder" in the living ghosts of Richard Ramirez, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Aileen Wuornos, and the Zodiac Killer. Zodiac who...CAME TO MARCH'S HALLOWEEN EVE GET-TOGETHER IN A MASK BECAUSE HE WAS NEVER CAUGHT SO THE SHOW COULDN'T EVEN ATTEMPT TO PRESUME HIS IDENTITY. That's some serious schtick, right there.

Arrow: "Beyond Redemption" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

This week’s Arrow installment wasn’t concerned with introducing a flashy new villain or an earth-shattering plot twist. The show already has plenty of material to juggle as it is. Instead, it dug deeper into several running conflicts and welcomed Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander behind the camera. With some stylish action and ample character drama, it was definitely an all-around solid outing for Team Arrow.

After last week’s episode completely ignored Ollie’s decision to run for mayor, that particular subplot became the focus this time around. In a clever little twist, Ollie took over Sebastian Blood’s old office, morphing into both his campaign headquarters and the location of the new Arrow Cave (or Quiver, or whatever they end up calling it). The new digs are pretty swanky despite the odd power outage, and there’s even room for Ollie’s trusty salmon ladder in the corner.

Nintendo announces (and delays) first mobile game, 'Miitomo'

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Today during a special briefing Nintendo shared more details regarding its plans for mobile gaming. The first game, called "Miitomo" ("Mii Friends") will capitalize on the success of Miis and let them communicate with others without your direct influence. Nintendo says this is to encourage interaction between people who are shy.

Miitomo will be the first of five mobile games that will launch by March 2017. It will be free-to-play with in-app purchases, though the other games slated for mobile release will be paid.

However, instead of targeting the year's end as planned, Nintendo is now looking to begin the roll-out by March 2016. According to new company CEO Tatsumi Kimishima, the delay is partly to give the company time to properly market the game, since right now its efforts are centered on its holiday line-up. Kimishima expressed doubt that mobile would make up a significant portion (half) of its revenue, since its mobile games will be focused on increasing the value of its console IP.

During the conference, Nintendo also shared details on its new online service. Called "Nintendo Account" (at least in Japan), it will serve as a hub for owners of Nintendo hardware, as well as PC and smartphone users. A cloud service will transfer data between mobile and console games.

We've known about Nintendo's plans to move into mobile gaming for quite a while now, but this is the first time that we have seen any real indication of the company's transition into the mobile arena.

Art Ops #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Art Ops is the latest big gun to be deployed in DC's ambitious relaunch of the Vertigo imprint. It pairs The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys co-writer Shaun Simon with Madman creator Mike Allred for a tale about a clandestine group that defends living pieces of artwork from thieves and evildoers. The book boasts a great concept and a promising creative team, but this first issue isn't exactly a home run.

Like many first issues, Art Ops #1 gets a little too preoccupied with setting up its world. This is understandable, at least, given the nature of the concept. There's some necessary background information that needs to be established right out of the gate. Unfortunately, this issue never really moves past the setup phase. Too much time and attention is devoted to explaining the Art Ops and their mission. And even so, some fundamental concepts remain unclear. Readers are pretty much asked to take it for granted that famous paintings like Mona Lisa can come to life and live an entirely human existence outside of their two-dimensional world. Does this mean only paintings of human subjects are alive? Despite all the exposition in this issue, plenty of questions remain.
