Marvel's Darth Vader Comic Continues to Shine

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

One of the many great qualities about this series is that individual issues often work as perfectly engaging stories in their own right as well as pieces of a larger whole. That's very much the case with Darth Vader #12. Even though this issue is the second chapter of writer Charles Soule and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli's latest story arc, it also serves as a terrific, mostly self-contained look at how Vader honed his fearsome reputation in the early days of the Galactic Empire.

Having survived an assassination attempt in issue #11, Vader returns to Coruscant this month to get to the bottom of this mystery and discover whether his new master may have had a hand in the attack. In the process, we get a closer look at how the rank and file of the Empire view their Emperor's new favorite son. That, plus more deep dives into Vader's fractured psyche, as the newly minted Dark Lord of the Sith works ever harder to squash the remaining traces of Anakin Skywalker.

Archaia Crafts a Worthy Labyrinth Prequel

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Prior to David Bowie's untimely death, I would have happily paid money to see a new Labyrinth movie. But these days, not so much. At this point, better the saga be continued in another medium where Bowie's absence isn't so strongly felt. Labyrinth: Coronation successfully recaptures the tone of that film even as it steps back to examine the tragic origins of the man who grew to become Jareth the Goblin King.

Writer Si Spurrier and artist Daniel Bayliss use the setting of the original movie as a framing device, with Jareth regaling baby Toby with a tale that quickly becomes obvious is his own origin story. The result is a Labyrinth prequel that takes place as much in the real world as the Labyrinth itself (for now, at least). That might sound like a questionable storytelling decision, but it works. It helps that the real world portions are set in 18th Century Vienna, so there's still an air of the fantastical and ostentatious to the narrative.

Spider-Man's Anniversary Comic Disappoints

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This issue marks the first of two big numbering milestones the Spider-Man franchise will be celebrating this spring. Unfortunately, take away the #300 ob the cover and the only thing truly noteworthy about this comic is its length. In terms of dramatic stakes and emotional investment, this storyline is falling disappointingly flat.

It's not even a problem of scope. Writer Chip Zdarsky introduces a truly world-ending threat as Spidey and his fellow heroes find their own tech wiped out even as an army of Tinkerer-boosted villains swoop in for the kill. That in turn fuels a larger doomsday scenario later in the story. Some might argue this is all too big for a Spider-Man comic, dragging the hero out of his comfort zone to deal with challenges above his pay grade. I don't put much stock in that criticism, as Dan Slott's Spider-Man run has regularly proven that it's possible to push the character in strange, unlikely new directions and still maintain the core of Spider-Man.

Battlefield 1: Apocalypse DLC Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Battlefield 1: Apocalypse should be thought of mostly as a map pack, with two especially strong and great-looking ground battles leading the charge back into the fray. The pair of simple air battles, on the other hand, aren’t much more than a distraction from the real war.

Apocalypse’s River Somme, Caporetto, and Passchendaele are standard Battlefield maps meant to be played in modes like Conquest. They all bring the brutality the same way: they’re relatively open and less directed, with limited cover options. That’s a contrast to Battlefield 1’s previous maps, which have emphasized high cover and defined flanking routes. It’s easy to make a beeline for the next objective, especially on Passchendaele, though this still leaves you vulnerable to sniper fire.

HP is a longtime Google Chrome OS partner, cranking out Chromebooks on a regular schedule that run the gamut from surprisingly high-end to budget-oriented education models. For this review I'm going to be checking out one of the latter, as this HP Chromebook 11 (See it on Amazon) is priced at $199 or a little less, making it one of the most affordable laptops money can buy these days. The question is can a laptop that is this affordable actually be workable for day-to-day use? I dedicated myself to the pursuit of the answer.

The Terrifics Are No Fantastic Four (The Terrifics #1 Review)

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The New Age of DC Heroes was among my more anticipated comic book projects for 2018, but this new line has done nothing to live up to that promise in its first couple months. Instead of comics that introduce bold new characters and ideas into the DCU, we're getting a bunch of books that seem content to remix familiar archetypes and take a "style over substance" approach to storytelling. The hope was that The Terrifics could at least break that cycle by introducing a new team comprised of old favorites. Unfortunately, the slow start in this first issue prevents the series from building much momentum out of the gate.

The Terrifics comes across as nothing if not DC's attempt at building its own Fantastic Four. You have a team of four heroes led by a genius inventor who explore beyond the known reaches of the universe. Hey, if Marvel refuses to publish an FF book, someone might as well do it, right?

The Flash: "Subject 9" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

After a brief, Olympics-induced hiatus, The Flash returned tonight to chronicle the ongoing feud between Barry Allen and Clifford DeVoe. The previous episode offered a new ray of light in Barry’s world, as Ralph helped him beat the murder rap and return to active duty. But any hopes that this latest twist might have been the catalyst the DeVoe conflict needed were sahed this week as the show promptly fell back into old, repetitive habits. It’s enough to wonder what was actually accomplished by putting Barry in prison in the first place.

The only real, tangible fallout of Barry’s prison stint appears to be that his CCPD career is on shaky ground. It’s tough to muster too much sympathy for Barry when I’ve often found myself wondering why Barry maintains a day job in the first place. Given that he’s a metahuman and has access to all the resources and money left to him by the original Harrison Wells, aren’t there better ways he can be spending his time? I’ll grant I am mildly interested to see where the series is going with Barry’s newfound career as a private eye, but on the whole it just doesn’t feel like there’s enough fallout from the whole prison ordeal.

It seems like with each new keyboard we get more features, and with its new HyperX Alloy Elite RGB (See it on Amazon) it seems like they've finally completed the cycle, since it has pretty much everything you'd expect in a flagship RGB keyboard. Though this is a "new" model, it's basically the Alloy Elite but with RGB lighting. Red Sparrow Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Spy movies don’t get a lot seedier than Red Sparrow. The new thriller stars Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian woman coerced into joining a secret government program designed to train women and men to exploit the sexual desires of the enemy, by any means necessary, no matter how repugnant they may be.

It’s a grotesque concept but it might have at least been interesting if the filmmakers had anything interesting to say about it. Instead, director Francis Lawrence’s film tries to operate as a slick, sensual spy blockbuster while also constantly acknowledging just how messed up every single thing about it really is. It’s hard to take the film’s critique of dehumanization seriously when it takes every opportunity possible to luxuriate in its prurience, and it’s impossible to enjoy the film as a superficial thrill ride when every single scene is built on a foundation of horrific abuse.

Jessica Jones Season 2 Premiere Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a spoiler-free review of Marvel's Jessica Jones Season 2 premiere. Check back on Thursday, March 8th for the rest of our reviews of Jessica Jones' second season.

How do you follow a villain like Kilgrave? David Tennant’s sociopathic Purple Man loomed so large in the freshman season of Jessica Jones, his gravitational pull occasionally left the series feeling as unbalanced as its heroine, holding us captive in anticipation of his next appearance.

So now that he’s gone (or is he?), you can’t help but feel his absence -- the black hole at the center of everything, threatening to pull Jessica in. Surprisingly, this works in the show’s favor, at least in the first episode of Season 2. Kilgrave left a mark on Jessica, one that doesn’t disappear just because he’s dead. As Frank Castle had to learn in his own Netflix series a few months ago, vengeance isn’t a shortcut to freedom, it’s just another step down the rabbit hole, until you’re in so deep you forget who you are and what you’re fighting for.

Netflix's The Ritual Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a scenario that most horror film fans will likely find familiar: A group of city-dwelling friends trek into dank unfamiliar woods, motivated either by a need to party hearty (if the protagonists are under 25) or to reclaim bygone friendship (if they are over 25). During their trek, one member of their party becomes injured or stranded, and the rest of the party slowly begins to panic when they realize they are hopelessly lost. Eventually, a rogue mutant, family of cannibals, vengeful witch, or hungry forest-dwelling critter will beset our heroes, snacking on them one by one until a single hero survives to solve the mystery of the thing attacking them.

There are myriad good versions of this story, and an almost infinite number of bad versions of this story. David Bruckner's The Ritual, now playing on Netflix, is thankfully of the former. It is a film that languidly wrenches thrills from your brainstem, using skilled lighting and adept visual obfuscation to explore fear, grief, and the futility of malehood in equal measure. And while it does sometimes feel rote or expected (a result of its setup), The Ritual is a more patient, more soulful, and certainly more unsettling film than your average lost-in-the-woods thriller.

The Walking Dead's Midseason Premiere is Sad, Too Long

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Ohhhh.

So it was all a dream! Or was it? Or...I don't know.

I guess the mystery seasonal "flash-forward" snippets weren't a flash-forward at all - which many fans started doubting back when Carl revealed he was bitten (and therefore couldn't be in the bearded-Rick future like he was, off-screen, in the season premiere). It was all Carl's idealized endgame. It's the world of mercy and forgiveness and cooperation he's been dreaming of. Which was basically the future Rick once wanted for everyone, particularly Carl and Judith, back before he became consumed with eliminating Negan.

And the little girl we thought might be baby Grace, because of how much older Rick looked in these scenes, was actually Judith. Carl, as it turned out, was just imagining an overly-aged version of Rick even though it was only supposed to be six or seven years from now. And a Rick a mysterious limp too (a nod to the comics here...designed to make some fans think it was a time jump?).

Opinion: Marvel's 'Fresh Start Need to Live Up to Its Name

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This week Marvel Comics revealed the latest in a long line of annual relaunches. Unofficially dubbed "Fresh Start," this relaunch is conveniently timed with the release of May's Avengers: Infinity War, aiming to give readers a clean, easy gateway into Marvel's comic book line. The idea is to offer plenty of new #1 issues, new creative teams and new status quos. In short, basically the same thing Marvel has done with every other relaunch dating back to 2012's Marvel NOW. If Marvel truly wants to reach out to new readers and achieve a more lasting success with this relaunch, they need to prove that Fresh Start is fundamentally different from what's come before.

Metal Gear Survive Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Metal Gear Survive is a weird game. In its sometimes clumsy efforts to merge stealth action, base-building, survival sim, and horror by stitching together pieces from past Metal Gear games, it’s effectively scrubbed those elements of the series’ signature humor and personality. That uniquely wild mix of sharp socio-political commentary and zany military sci-fi that has defined Metal Gear is swapped out in favor of a subpar fantasy plot involving zombies and wormholes, delivered by a cast of underdeveloped characters.

But there is fun to be had in Survive’s mishmash of ideas and the repetitive, yet comforting loop of resource-gathering and base-building, if you’re willing to power through many hours of initial tedium.

Rust Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Rust is a griefer’s paradise. There’s nothing quite like finding a guy sleeping in a forest and looting him before he wakes up, or camping outside another player’s fort and killing her when she opens the door. For those who enjoy deadly games of cat and mouse, Rust might just be the best survival game out there. But anybody more interested in building and exploration, or isn’t able to devote themselves to one game, may have a rough time.

Even though other games are better at specific elements like crafting, combat, survival, and exploration, I’ve never played a survival game that combines them quite like Rust. The way it blends survival and competitive genres is fun, especially if you enjoy the goofier bits, like firing rocket launchers at a naked man running from a pig, or being stabbed to death by a person blasting Russian music over their microphone and brandishing a spear. It’s weirder and less polished than the competition, but that’s part of the fun.

The Tick's Second Half is Sloppy But Silly

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a spoiler-free review of episodes 7-12 of Amazon's The Tick - the second half of the show's first season.

The Tick - which has already been renewed for a second season by Amazon - drops the final six episodes of its first season this Friday, February 23rd. And whereas the first half of this run was dedicated to the set up and formation of Tick and Arthur as a team (along with the idea Tick might even be imaginary), these remaining chapters round out the full adventure aspects of the series - including a final showdown with The Terror.

The humor still holds up here, thankfully, as does this show's merging of daffiness with a TV-MA language grid. None of the f-bombs take away from the goofiness and Peter Serafinowicz's Tick is still marvelous. Since this particular Tick story is solidly an Arthur redemption arc, having focused heavily on the poor young man's trauma during the first half of the season, Tick is relegated, more often than not, to being Arthur's booming, boneheaded sidekick - capable of feverishly funny platitude-salads and thunderous feats of strength.

Payday 2 for Switch Review: Communications Breakdown

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

When we first reviewed Payday 2 in 2013, we gave it an 8.0, for great. Here’s what we said about it then:

“Played as intended with a group of friends, PayDay 2 is much like one of its heists: things can get a little sloppy, but the potential payoff is big. Parts of its presentation are lacking, and the state of its single-player is criminal, but overall, it's a deep, addictive co-op shooter that tickled my inner burglar.” Read the original Payday 2 review.

The Switch version has all of that, plus most – but not all – of the content updates the PC and console versions have gotten since launch, and the addition of an exclusive new character and HD rumble give it a slight edge. But as with many ports, performance isn’t its strong suit, and the lack of built-in voice chat is a big problem for a game that requires such tight cooperation for success.

Netflix's Mute Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a SPOILER-FREE review of Netflix's Mute.

Netflix’s Mute, which is now available to stream, fails to achieve the heights of other successful entries within the cyberpunk genre like Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and even newcomer Altered Carbon. It’s like someone went to a science fiction-themed Home Depot, picked out all the right parts but forgot the most important piece back in aisle 7...the story.

Alexander Skarsgard plays Leo, an Amish gentlemen who is unable to speak due to a boating accident in his childhood. There is a way to fix his vocal complication but his beliefs won’t allow him to get the surgery. He’s now a bartender at a Berlin nightclub where the customers, along with most of the staff, wear costumes that look like they were purchased from a Fifth Element yard sale. Hit-Girl #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The Kick-Ass franchise has never really clicked for me in the way I wish it would. A lot of that has to do with how much at odds with themselves these books tend to be. They're ostensibly telling the story of what happens when real, ordinary people attempt to become costumed vigilantes, yet the grotesque violence and ludicrous plot twists destroy any sense of realism in this universe. That problem is only exacerbated when Hit-Girl becomes the star of the show. There's nothing remotely grounded about a preteen girl who slaughters criminals like a superhuman ninja. On the other hand, the benefit of making Hit-Girl the protagonist of these stories is that at least then Mark Millar can abandon any pretense of realism and simply lean into the crazy, over-the-top nature of this universe. Hit-Girl #1 is not a great comic, but at least it know what kind of comic it wants to be.

The Amazing Spider-Man #796 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This issue serves as the final stop before writer Dan Slott reaches the end of his massive Spider-Man saga. As with the other chapters of "Threat Level: Red" this issue is devoted to arranging a few pieces and generally setting the stage for what's coming. The key difference, however, is that while previous chapters toward engrossing stories in their own right, issue #796 struggles to deliver a very memorable Spider-Man adventure. It's a surprisingly unremarkable comic given how close to the end we are.

With this tale, Slott and co-writer Christos Gage deliver a loose follow-up to last week's Amazing Spider-Man Annual. This issue fails to build on that foundation in a meaningful way, unfortunately. For the most part, this script cycles through a lot of familiar tropes. You have the scientific demonstration interrupted by opportunistic villains and Peter forced to put his professional life in jeopardy in order to protect innocent civilians. The script does introduce a couple key plot points in advance of "Go Down Swinging" (click here for more on one of those), but neither really hinges on the core plot points. With the previous couple issues, there was a sense of frustration in that Slott and Gage were telling good stories that really deserved more room in which to breathe. Seeing this arc wrap up on such a bland, formulaic note only exacerbates that sense of frustration.

Game Night Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Let’s be honest: it’s pretty rare to watch a broad comedy nowadays that you don’t have to make excuses for. All too often we wind up having to say things like, “Well, the plot sucked but at least I laughed a lot,” or “It was funny but it went on half an hour too long.” And then of course there’s the dreaded, “I just turned off my brain and enjoyed it,” as if a movie that only works if you’re dumber than you actually are is something worth celebrating.

So it’s a real treat to watch a comedy as sharp as Game Night, a film with a clever screenplay, memorable characters, tight pacing and impressive filmmaking across the board. It may not be the funniest movie ever but it’s still extremely funny, and it works on basically every level.

Black Panther Annual #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Apparently there's some movie out and now everybody loves Black Panther? Who knew? Black Panther Annual #1 is ostensibly another effort by Marvel to capitalize on the record-breaking success of the film. This oversized issue serves as a fitting celebration of the character's long comic book history, but it's not necessarily geared towards those who aren't already familiar with said history. If you're new to the Black Panther comics, you're better off looking elsewhere for a jumping-on point.

The idea with this issue is that Marvel has brought back three classic BP writers to craft stories that serve as epilogues to their respective runs. No doubt the biggest selling point for many fans is the fact that Christopher Priest has returned to revisit the property he did so much to shape in the late '90s and early '00s. Priest never had the opportunity to give his long run the conclusion it deserved. His story here doesn't really address the open threads from that series. What's the point, after all this time? Yet this story does serve as a fitting end-cap to Priest's run all the same.

Batman #41 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Batman hit a bit of a rough patch with its most recent story arc. Fortunately, there are few more dependable creative combinations than Tom King and Mikel Janin at DC right now. Their latest collaboration, "Everyone Loves Ivy," helps put the series back on track even as it shines a light on one of Batman's most enduring villains.

In terms of plot, this issue is about as straightforward as they come. Poison Ivy is back, and her powers have seemingly grown to the point where she now controls the minds of nearly everyone on the planet. As is so often the case with King's work, it's the presentation that stands out most. King's prose immediately creates a surreal, dreamlike quality that befits a story about mind control and domination. King relies on another time-tested technique where the the narration and plot are seemingly at a disconnect, leaving the reader disoriented and uncertain. Reading this issue becomes like solving a satisfying puzzle.

Annihilation Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Writer-director Alex Garland’s Annihilation is at times unconventional, pretentious, intelligent, and indulgent. It’s far less accessible than his 2015 film Ex Machina -- Annihilation’s esoteric last act alone will almost certainly prove divisive -- but it’s also a daring, unique sci-fi experience in an age of branded IP juggernauts and safe rehashes.

Natalie Portman carries the film with a cerebral steeliness as Lena, a biologist and former soldier who joins a covert government mission to explore The Shimmer, a mysterious phenomenon whose expansion threatens our very existence. Portman, who is in almost every scene of the film, wisely underplays Lena with a reserve and nuance befitting such a secretive person. But as strong and central as Portman is to the film, Annihilation is an ensemble piece featuring several strong supporting turns.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 128 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

If Universe 7 has any hope left, it’s in Goku and Vegeta. The two heroes lay broken before the might of Jiren, but not defeated. Episode 128 is about their unending resolve and how each draws from their values differently to fuel their power. Not all the story moments hit their mark, but those that did had such a great impact that their ramifications will be felt for many episodes to come.

The Prince of all Saiyans has fallen, and while there was a lot of good that came from his scenes, his defeat does leave me a bit disappointed in Super. The Tournament of Power has offered great opportunities to invigorate interest in other characters outside of Goku. Having Goku fall and someone else save Universe 7 would have been a drastic but welcome shift away from the norm that’s been established. Vegeta has had many outstanding moments over the years, but he hasn’t had his time to shine as the hero.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

In many ways, Legends of Tomorrow’s third season has been every bit as entertaining as the first. However, there are a couple of areas where this season doesn’t quite measure up yet, one of them being the team dynamic. Between the loss of both halves of Firestorm and the less than thrilling addition of Zari Tomaz, the Legends just aren’t quite the well-oiled yet dysfunctional machine they were last year. This episode was clearly aimed at rectifying that problem and making Zari feel more like a legitimate member of this oddball family. The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Within my first hour of playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance, I was beaten up by the town drunk. By the end of the almost 70 hours I spent with it, I was sizing up a trio of bandits with a smirk on my real-life face, knowing even together they were no match for my steel and the extensive training I’d received under some of the toughest knights in this beautifully recreated medieval land. This wasn’t merely a change in stats and equipment. Without a single spell or magic sword, Kingdom Come gave me the abundantly satisfying feeling of transforming from doe-eyed scrub to stone-cold killer.

Warhorse’s tale of tribulation and betrayal shines brightest in the little ways it sells the fantasy of living in the Late Middle Ages. Not only are there survival mechanics that track hunger and fatigue, but every aspect of your character’s appearance has an impact on how NPCs perceive you. The biggest example is how clothes will accumulate wear and trail dust as you traipse through the wilderness, leaving nobles less than impressed with your scruffiness.

Analogue Super Nt Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The Analogue NT does one thing really well: It allows you to play actual Super Nintendo games – not ROMS – on a modern television. Sure, with the right adapters you could probably hook up your beloved, beat-up SNES to your current HDTV, but colors wash out, strange bars appear at the edges, ugly lines mess up the picture, and games just don't look how you remember them.

The Super Nt doesn't make games look exactly like you remember them either. But with an HDMI port, clever engineering, and presumably some sort of blood magic, the Super Nt renders games in gorgeous, clear pixels on your giant flatscreen. Overall, the Super Nt makes SNES games look amazing again – for a price. The MSRP is $189.99, and that doesn’t include a controller.

Injustice 2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles DLC Review - Turtle Powering Up

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Netherrealm has built a reputation for including some wild guest characters in its fighting games, but perhaps none has been as unexpected as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crashing the party in Injustice 2. While it may initially seem strange to see Leonardo clashing with Superman, or Donatello in a gadget battle with Batman, Netherrealm has done an exceptional job with fine tuning the Turtles to make each one of them feel unique, yet familiar, and all the while fitting in with the rest of Injustice 2’s super powered roster. (Read the full Injustice 2 review.)

The most important thing to note about the Turtles in Injustice 2 is that while this $10 package only takes up one character slot on the character select screen, all four are playable characters with similar but substantially different movesets.

Fe Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

For a game about communication, Fe can often be unclear. Its wordless, visually striking journey is filled with charming creatures to sing with, but its 3D platforming world can sometimes feel aimless. And while I enjoyed learning its musical languages, the short trip it took me on left me with the impression that Fe missed most of its best opportunities.

You play as a small, fox-like creature called a Fe, but what you’re doing in a forest under attack by strange robotic creatures isn’t entirely clear. The whole idea is to sing to form bonds with different animals, and eventually learn to sing their languages as well. Harmonizing with another creature is a cute moment, even if the process doesn’t really change at any point throughout Fe. Bonding with a dozen little lizards so that their mob would follow me around and excitedly sing along as I serenade other creatures can be extremely charming.

Everything Sucks!: Season 1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a SPOILER-FREE review of Everything Sucks!: Season 1. The series premieres on February 16th on Netflix.

Don’t let the title fool you. Netflix’s new coming-of-age drama does not suck. Set in 1996, Everything Sucks! is a quirky dramedy that tells the story of a battle between the AV and drama clubs of Boring High School. While the description might not sound as enticing as the Battle of Helms Deep in Lord of the Rings -- the series still packs quite a punch. It lives up to other high school classics like Saved by the Bell where there’s plenty of heart mixed in with a few laughs.

Everything Sucks! excels at developing its high school ensemble without going for the heightened sense of reality that 13 Reasons Why and Riverdale seem to embrace. There are no scenes with teenagers drinking scotch and martinis on a Thursday afternoon. Even when they do try drugs and alcohol, the scenes are portrayed in a way that’s authentic. Remember when Zima Beer was hot, or that time when you tried household products to get high? Well, maybe that was just me, but the kids do feel grounded in a world that actually exists.

The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #42 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

One of the drawbacks to Dan Slott's decision to cap off his Amazing Spider-Man run at issue #800 is that he won't have much of an opportunity to explore Peter's new status quo as science editor at the Daily Bugle. Consider this annual issue an attempt to address that problem. It doesn't stand out as much as some of Slott's recent stories, but it does allow fans to spend a little more time with the Daily Bugle crew and a few long-time villains.

Slott's story builds on the aftermath of The Clone Conspiracy (not necessarily a point in its favor), as Betty Brant and Peter Parker join forces to investigate a clue left behind by the briefly resurrected Ned Leeds. That puts the duo in the path of the Enforcers, the Kingpin and various other nefarious players covering up something called Blood Creek. It's an excuse for Slott and artist Cory Smith to combine traditional Spider-Man antics with a dash of good, old-fashioned mystery. That mystery doesn't have the greatest payoff, unfortunately. The truth behind Blood Creek is more silly than compelling as it tired to merge the seedy criminal underworld with the world of the supernatural.

Invincible #144 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

How often do we get the opportunity to see one writer and two artists remain on board a comic for 15 years and 144 issues straight? This series has been allowed to grow and evolve over the years in ways that simply wouldn't be possible on a traditional, company-owned project. All of that only adds to the weight and significance of this final issue, as Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker give fans one final outing with the Grayson family. It's not a flawless sendoff for the series, but an emotionally fulfilling one all the same.

The pacing of this final 12-part story arc, "The End of All Things," has been all over the map. For a time it seemed as though the book had reached its dramatic climax too soon, leaving little material to fill these final few issues. But now, with the surprise debut of a son Mark never knew he had and the pressures of becoming emperor weighing on our hero, it's as if the series suddenly has the opposite problem.

Hellraiser: Judgment Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The Hellraiser movies have long espoused the ethos that pain and pleasure are indivisible, which probably explains why all the straight-to-video sequels are pretty hard to watch. Maybe it's all very meta, and we’re supposed to enjoy not liking them.

Hellraiser started out as a slimy saga of supernatural sadomasochism and it quickly developed a complex mythology over the four theatrical releases. But from the fifth film onward all the selling points of Hellraiser - the monstrous Cenobites and the blurred lines between eroticism and agony - fell by the wayside. The majority of the straight-to-video installments have played like completely unrelated screenplays which had little bits and pieces of Hellraiser iconography clumsily grafted on after the fact. And none of those screenplays were particularly interesting. (Heck, two of them have the exact same twist ending.)

Star Wars: Thrawn #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Marvel has published some great Star Wars comics over the past few years, but their track record hasn't been so swell when it comes to adaptations of existing stories. Both The Force Awakens and Rogue One were rendered lifeless and inert in comic book form. The twist with Marvel's latest Star Wars adaptation, however, is that it draws from a novel rather than a film. That gives writer Jody Houser and artist Luke Ross far more material to work with and immediately yields stronger results.

Star Wars: Thrawn is an adaptation of Timothy Zahn's 2017 novel, which provided the definitive, Lucasfilm Story Group-approved version of Grand Admiral Thrawn's origin story. Either the novel or this comic are ideal for fan of Star Wars Rebels who want to learn a little more about the strategic mastermind who's become such a thorn in the side of the growing Rebel Alliance. Houser and Ross don't stray far from the source material in this first issue, covering the novel's opening chapters in truncated form and often directly reusing pieces of Zahn's text.

Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

There are very few comic book crossover events where readers get a truly complete and cohesive story just sticking to the core miniseries. There are always tie-ins and spinoffs that add much-needed depth and context to the main conflict. Dark Nights: Metal is no exception. The core series has been a wild romp, but readers simply aren't getting the same experience if they aren't also adding books like Batman Lost #1, Hawkman Found #1 and the Dark Days one-shots to their list. Now you can add Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt to that list.

That's not to say this comic isn't without its flaws. It pretty much goes without saying that an issue boasting four writers and three pencillers is going to suffer from a certain degree of inconsistency. It's not clear exactly how writers Scott Snyder, Grant Morrison, James Tynion IV and Joshua Williamson divided up their work on this issue. Suffice it to say, there are sections where Morrison's surreal voice is much more readily apparent than others. The narrative as a whole is also a bit jumbled, jumping between the Dark Knights themselves, heroes like Flash, Cyborg and Raven and even a recap of Detective Chimp's origin story.

Kick-Ass #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

After three miniseries and a Hit-Girl spinoff, Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr. are effectively rebooting the Kick-Ass saga at Image. While one of the more recognizable Millarworld properties, Kick-Ass has never really lived up to its potential as a story exploring what happens when ordinary people attempt to become costumed vigilantes. The hope was that a new publisher and a new protagonist might help the new Kick-Ass succeed where the original struggled. So far, that doesn't appear to be the case.

The new Kick-Ass abandons nerdy high schooler Dave Lizewski in favor of Patience Lee, a recently discharged military veteran struggling to support her family. Millar and Romita deserve credit for crafting a new protagonist that differs significantly from the original. With IDW's 30 Days of Night reboot not doing much to distinguish itself from the original, at least Kick Ass 2.0 isn't telling the exact same story as the first series. Patience is a a character with a far different background and set of motivations.

Bayonetta 2 Review: Just as Amazing on Switch

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

When we first reviewed Bayonetta 2 in 2014 on Wii U, we gave it a 9.5. Here’s what we said about it then:

“Every aspect of Bayonetta 2 feels polished and focused. At times, the writing feels ridiculous, but I still love how it plays. The superb pacing and combat are just that good. By the end I was convinced: This sequel builds on everything that made the original great, and delivers one of the most satisfying action games I've played.” Read the full Bayonetta 2 for Wii U review.

The Switch version delivers that same action-packed experience, while smoothing out some rough edges.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Review: Not All Games Should Go Open-World

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Koei Tecmo and Omega Force’s 21-year-old Dynasty Warriors series has never been a series known to step outside its comfort zone, but Dynasty Warriors 9 is not your typical Dynasty Warriors game. For the first time, the developers have retired the tried-and-true segmented mission structure in favor of a large, open-world map with missions, points of interest, and random activities scattered sparsely about. But if this is the vision of what a modern Dynasty Warriors game is, then I’d prefer a flashback to the series’ more focused and co-op friendly past instead.

Combat in Dynasty Warriors 9 is its simplest joy, and at its height it’s like a ballet of beautiful, high-flying violence. I’ve shot tornadoes out of swords that wrecked an entire battlefield, juggling dozens of enemies in the air. I’ve rained ice and fire from the sky with the point of my finger. I’ve even created a vortex of electric storms that erupted all around me during a flurry of sword slashes. The shouts of enemies in agony, my allies supporting me, and the sounds of my attacks rampaging through the battlefield meld together with the rocking soundtrack.

Shadow of War: Blade of Galadriel DLC Review - Does it Work Without The Nemesis System?

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

If you’re looking to put a new spin on a winning formula, you probably don’t want to leave out your secret ingredient. Monolith does deserve credit for trying to make the Blade of Galadriel DLC feel like something other than just more of the same Shadow of War gameplay, but wielding Galadriel’s Light can’t hold a candle to the domination and Nemesis systems it sidelines.

Blade of Galadriel picks up after the third act, with Eltariel recovering Celebrimbor’s ring on the tower at Barad-dur and heading off to fight the remaining Nazgul on behalf of Galadriel. She’s still as bland a character as you’d expect a female elf version of Talion to be, so don’t expect any big twists, turns, or character moments from her. What few interesting moments there are come from brief appearances by Talion, though they serve only to repeat things we've already seen in slightly greater detail and, of course, to retread more lines from characters from the movies and books.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow: "Daddy Darhkest" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The Arrowverse has been at a relative low ebb in early 2018, and I have to wonder how much of that is simply due to the absence of Legends of Tomorrow. You can't put your best superhero show on extended hiatus and not expect consequences. Thankfully, Legends has returned, even as the rest of the Arrowverse takes a brief break for the Olympics. Better still, the series remains in fine form thanks to an episode that brings in a terrific guest star and advances the Mallus conflict considerably.

That guest star, of course, is Matt Ryan's John Constantine, who made his second Arrowverse appearance since the untimely cancellation of NBC's Constantine. As much as it was a treat to see Constantine stop by Arrow a couple years ago, ultimately his appearance felt more like a means of scooting the plot forward than a natural, elegant story development. Here, the writers were able to integrate Constantine into the mix more smoothly, building on all the recent developments with Mallus and the Darhk family. If anything, this seems like the perfect opportunity to induct Constantine into the fold on a semi-permanent basis. That doesn't appear to be in the cards this year.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 127 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Episode 127 opens on Jiren powering up and promptly laying into our heroes with vicious attacks and near-death inducing ki blasts. For all the great action though, Episode 127, unfortunately, mishandles what could have been intense emotional moments and delivers unsatisfying backstories.

Responding to Jiren’s force, the remaining Universe 7 fighters team up for some great action. At no point did the animation feel lacking. Even with so many characters and explosions happening at once, the brawl was easy to follow. Super has wisely made sure that each person’s ki-related abilities have a signature color, a far cry from the days of nothing but the yellow glow of Super Saiyan’s everywhere.

Star Trek: Discovery Season Finale Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Full spoilers follow for this episode. Click here if you want to learn how to watch Star Trek: Discovery.

And that’s a wrap on Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, which goes out on a kind of weird note that elicits both disappointment and excitement. The disappointment comes from the rushed and somewhat tough-to-buy resolution of the Klingon war, while the excitement is the result of the final moments of the episode as the USS Enterprise herself showed up, seemingly setting up Season 2!

Let’s talk about Captain Pike and the Enterprise in a bit. But first, Burnham and the Discovery crew find themselves in quite a difficult situation following Admiral Cornwell and Sarek’s decision to give the ship over to Mirror Georgiou. That’s some grade-A Star Trek admiral dumbness going on there, following in the grand tradition of idiotic moves by Starfleet Command going back to The Original Series. Burnham realizes that there’s got to be more to their plan than she’s been filled in on, and the crux of the episode comes down to her figuring it all out and saving the Federation from itself along the way.

Fifty Shades Freed Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The Fifty Shades movies are less like movies and more like Sharper Image catalogues, but with a lot more sex in them. The characters are so feeble, and their stories are so inconsequential, that everything that would usually make a movie interesting becomes window dressing for… well, the window dressings.

Ornate bathtubs, lavish beds, a frying pan that even an amateur chef would kill for, fancy cars and even fancier aircraft. Fifty Shades Freed, like all the other films in this series, is so obsessed with the protagonists’ affluent, enviable lifestyle that whenever the characters actually talk it feels like somebody owes the montages an apology for interrupting.

And yet it’s hard to enjoy even the superficial allure of the Fifty Shades movies, because evidently the price of every single product you could ever possibly ask for is a creepy boyfriend no one could ever possibly want.
