South Park's New Halloween Episode Has Great Payoff

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Even though South Park sticks to that September-November timeframe nowadays, it’s only occasionally that the series goes through the trouble of crafting a full-blown Halloween episode. Sometimes the result is an instant classic (2012’s “A Nightmare on Facetime” comes to mind) and other times you wind up with “Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers.” This year’s Halloween special leans more towards the former, luckily. It’s just too bad that slow build-up limited what was possible with “The Scoots.”

With all the current fads just begging to be spoofed by South Park, I’m not sure the e-scooter was anywhere near the top of the list, but that’s the direction the series went this week. The town’s e-scooter invasion made for some humorous moments early on (mostly involving Mr. Mackey’s growing rage at the scooters and the accident-prone hipsters who ride them) but it wasn’t long before the e-scooter gag became just one more dead horse for the writers to beat. I will grant, though, that the e-scooter humor might connect better with city dwellers who have to co-exist with them on a daily basis. I live in one of those parts of the South where public transportation barely exists, so your mileage may vary.

Plot Isn't the Draw for Marvel's Spider-Force

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

With Spider-Geddon #2 now on the stands, the floodgates have truly opened as far as event tie-ins go. Spider-Force is one of several books featuring a team of multiverse-spanning heroes carrying out a specific mission. In terms of the plot and relevance to the main Spider-Geddon event, Spider-Force isn't much to write home about. But for those who want to see Christopher Priest return to the Spider-Man franchise after a several decade absence, this book has a bit more to offer.

Spider-Force niche in the larger tapestry that is Spider-Geddon centers around Solus, father of the spider-devouring Inheritors. The crystal containing Solus' essence is still marooned on the irradiated world where the Inheritors were held prisoner. Kaine is now charged with leading a strike force of various Spider-Men and women in order to destroy the crystal before Verna can revive her father. In other words, a fairly straightforward and unremarkable premise. Most of these tie-ins seem to revolve around a motley group of heroes chasing some MacGuffin or another, and there's little sense that the events of this series will wind up having huge ramifications on the core miniseries.

DC's Drowned Earth Features Epic Carnage and a Familair Plot

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

With the Aquaman movie hitting theaters in less than two months, DC needs a new reader-friendly, Aquaman-centric event comic that can give newcomers a primer on all things Atlantis. Drowned Earth definitely fits that bill. This one-shot special kicks off a crossover between the ongoing Justice League and Aquaman comics. Some of the beats in this issue are overly familiar, but it serves as an engaging start to this crossover all the same.

Fans of 2013's Throne of Atlantis crossover will find themselves in comfortably familiar territory. Once again Aquaman takes center stage in a conflict that involves the surface world being flooded by an oceanic enemy. The key difference this time being that this enemy hails from the stars and harbors just as much resentment toward Atlantis as it does the rest of the world.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Ever since the massive success of Pirates of The Caribbean Disney has been attempting to catch that same live-action lightning in a bottle. Though they've had numerous record-breaking smashes within the MCU, Star Wars and by raiding their own animated IP for remakes, they've found it hard to recreate the model of a new original franchise with both Tomorrowland and The Lone Ranger failing to grab the attentions of audiences. The newest original Disney live-action film is the veritable Holiday smorgasbord The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which whilst by no means a great movie has definitely learnt some lessons from the studio’s mistakes of the past.

Loosely inspired by the classic ballet The Nutcracker, this reimagining sits somewhere between The Chronicles of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, and... Return to Oz--we'll come back to that later—with a young feisty girl who doesn't quite fit in with her fancy family and longs for something more. In that way, MacKenzie Foy's Clara is just like so many other Disney leading ladies; Belle's tired of her provincial town, Ariel's desperate to explore the human world, and (live action) Alice is ready to follow her father's footsteps and explore the globe. Clara's motivations though come from the loss of her mother.

Old Man Logan #50 Serves as a Fitting Series Finale

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Apparently you can't bring back one Wolverine without discarding another. Old Man Logan made his transition to the core Marvel Universe in the aftermath of the regular Wolverine's death. And now that Wolverine is in the excruciatingly slow process of returning, it's Old Man Logan's turn to shuffle off into that good night. Old Man Logan #50 proves to be a fitting, if rushed, series finale.

It's fitting that writer Ed Brisson wraps up the series with another fight between Logan and Maestro. It mirrors both the beginning of Brisson's run and the very first Wolverine story. The tone of this rematch is certainly dire enough, with Logan clinging to life while his healing factor fails him and "King" Maestro lording it over a remote town full of terrified subjects. Had Marvel not announced the upcoming Dead Man Logan followup series, there would be legitimate cause to worry about whether our hero can survive this fight.

DC's Heroes in Crisis Delivers Another Gut Punch

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Reviewing comic book series on an issue-by-issue basis isn't always ideal. You're only getting a small chunk of a larger story, and sometimes it's tough to judge that story without examining the entire package. That's very much the case with Heroes in Crisis. This is a well-executed, emotionally charged story, but one that raises some significant concerns about the way in which specific characters are being handled. The ending is clearly going to make or break this story.

Issue #2 explores the ongoing fallout of the tragic mass-killing at Sanctuary. For one thing, writer Tom King and artist Clay Mann reveal that the death toll is even greater than what was indicated last month, resulting in a reveal that will no doubt rankle many readers. That's where many of the concerns surrounding the direction of the series crop up. The abrupt, casual way Heroes in Crisis kills off fan-favorite characters is upsetting. That seems to be the intent. King and Mann frame the cycle of violence in this book as being as senseless, random and unsparing as mass-killings in the real world.

When a review laptop shows up on my desk, I immediately look over the spec sheet to get an idea of what I’m dealing with, and what I should look for when testing. The very last thing I look at is the price. For this Asus laptop I remained in an information blackout throughout testing, and once I was finished I combined the spec sheet with the benchmark results and my experience with the laptop, and assumed the Scar II would be priced somewhere between $2,200 and $2,500. To my surprise, it’s priced at just $1,999. That's a surprisingly low price for a powerful laptop such as this. Dubbed the Scar II (See it on Amazon) it's a revamp of the previous Scar, which is a laptop made for FPS gaming. Let's take a closer look.

Family Drama Propels This Week's Flash

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Not everything has been sunshine and roses for The Flash Season 5 so far. Last week’s disappointing episode served as an uncomfortable reminder that the show still has plenty of hurdles yet to cross. But for the most part, the series seems on stronger footing this year. “News Flash” is further proof, capturing the vibe of the classic Season 1 and 2-era Flash nicely.

As I’ve said in recent reviews, one of the big improvements this season is that the writers seem to have a better grasp on blending humor and character drama. The lightheartedness of those first two seasons is back in play, but not to such an exaggerated degree that it becomes forced and empty like it was in Season 4. The one-two punch of iris’ disastrous breakfast and Barry’s horrific softball skills helped kick this episode off on a very fun and entertaining note.

Call of Cthulhu Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

It doesn’t take long for Call of Cthulhu’s dark and intriguing detective story to rapidly spiral down the well of occult madness. Inspired by the legendary Chaosium RPG of the same name, it tells its Lovecraftian tale with writing so strong that I couldn’t help but get sucked into the immersive atmosphere it created. The story itself can be confusing in spots, and some rougher mechanics and levels do rear up occasionally, but Call of Cthulhu still delivers what is perhaps one of the finest cosmic horror experiences in modern gaming.

The hero of this story is Edward Pierce, a grizzled veteran and alcoholic PI who acts mostly as a blank slate for you to experience the story through. There really isn’t much to the character beyond the many choices you make for him, shaped by which skills you choose to upgrade. In the beginning, I found Pierce’s somewhat wooden portrayal a little jarring, but as I made him my own by focusing heavily in the stats that intrigued me most – like Investigation and Eloquence – and then leaned on those skills in my conversations and investigations, I rapidly became invested in his tortured tale.

Diablo 3 for Nintendo Switch Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Not every six-year-old game can feel fresh and modern on a new platform, especially after you take off the 'Ohmigosh it’s on Switch so I can take it anywhere!' goggles. This is my third trip through Diablo 3 since its original release on PC in 2012 and expansion pack-fueled debut on Xbox One in 2014, and I have to say: it still plays wonderfully. That’s not a huge surprise. What is an unexpected delight is how good Diablo 3 looks on Nintendo’s portable console.

The Diablo 3 Eternal Collection doesn’t really offer anything new apart from a Ganondorf armor set, but it does offer everything: the Reaper of Souls expansion that makes you forget about the weak fourth Act, a seventh playable character in the form of the sadistic Necromancer, and every single update and tweak that’s helped Diablo 3 realize its full, enormous potential. It is Diablo 3 in its final form, and it’s simply a blast. Often literally, thanks to the explosive deaths that monsters suffer at your mighty hands. And it looks better than I expected it to, with image quality that suits the Switch’s built-in 720p screen perfectly. When you’re on a 65-inch 4K TV (running in Diablo’s maximum 960p resolution), only the character detail suffers a bit. The environments still look great!

Arrow's New Season Is Shaping Up Nicely

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

One of the recurring questions with Arrow Season 7 so far is whether supporting characters like Rene, Curtis and Dinahy have outlived their usefulness. As much as the new status quo has reinvigorated characters like Ollie and Felicity, the rest of the former Team Arrow is starting to feel like so much dead weight. “Crossing Lines” doesn’t necessarily do much to change that perception. It delivers what is easily the most well-rounded storyline of the new season so far, but it does so by downplaying those characters.

Perhaps, as this episode suggests, the answer is simply to rely on Curtis, Rene and Dinah more sparingly. All three found their niches this week in terms of providing comic relief or a little added muscle against the Longbow Hunters. They’re very much secondary to Ollie’s prison ordeal, Felicity’s obsessive hunt for Ricardo Diaz and the deepening conspiracy at ARGUS. So long as the writers keep the focus on those three storylines and don’t waste too much time mired in the personal lives of these other characters, the series should be just fine.

Can CBS All Access Compete With Netflix?

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

On the heels of its four-year anniversary, CBS All Access is by no means the new kid on the block when it comes to the digital streaming market, quietly existing as a hub to watch all-things CBS. Now, with the recent addition of big-budget serialized original series like Star Trek: Discovery and the upcoming reimagining of The Twilight Zone, All Access is striving to become more than just a place to watch old episodes of Blue Bloods and The Big Bang Theory. With its new approach to creating content, we thought it would be fun to review the site and see how it compares to the competition.

Over the past few years, CBS has bolstered its original programming lineup in order to compete with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and even the upcoming Disney Play service. While CBS may not be synonymous with creating ground-breaking television like some of its competitors, there are a few gems hiding among the "they solved it" procedurals that might make you consider giving this service a try. Let's take a closer look at what All Access has to offer, and if it's worth your hard-earned cash.

Sure, new features come along like wireless functionality, noise-cancelling, or even RGB lighting to spice things up, but those have all been around for some time. So when something actually new comes along, it’s a reason to be excited, especially when the "new" is a bit off the beaten path. That's the case with the HP OMEN Mindframe headset (See it on Amazon), which is the first headset to employ active cooling technology. Liz and the Blue Bird Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Two years ago, director Naoko Yamada released the emotionally powerful and beautiful movie, A Silent Voice, based off the critically acclaimed manga by Yoshitoki Oima. With A Silent Voice, Yamada deftly combined both the one-shot that led to the series, as well as the series itself, while also imbuing her own artistry and style. The result was a two and a half hour movie that explored the difficulty of communication and empathy in the messy and fraught time of adolescence.

I talk about A Silent Voice, because in many ways, Liz and the Blue Bird is similar. It's also gorgeously animated by the talented studio, Kyoto Animation; it features many of Yamada's signature directorial traits, like a focus on body expression over facial expression to display how a character really feels; it even has the same composer, Kensuke Ushio, who uses minimalist music to add flavor to quiet and yet intimate scenes. On paper, A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird mirror. But visually, and in terms of experience, you will find them drastically different.

The Walking Dead: "The Obliged" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

Aside from the very end, when Rick and Daryl escaped the Pit of Despair, dodging plummeting walkers on the way up (almost Tomb Raider-style), and then Rick went to head off Herd-icane Tordelia, there wasn't much to "The Obliged."

The way last week's episode left off, it seemed like Maggie and Daryl were headed to Alexandria right that minute. Which I was admittedly concerned about because - well - Daryl was carrying that heavy gas can and those wire handles can dig into your palm like a sonofabitch. Seriously. I didn't know how he was going to shlep that thing all the way.

As it turned out, the two simply crafted a plan to visit Negan. Or, more to the point, Maggie did. Daryl stayed behind completely to snoop on Rick and make sure he either didn't catch wind of it - or to make sure his warnings went unheard.

Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is Riverdale's Twisted Cousin

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Sabrina Spellman has never been one to suffer fools. The witchy tale of a magical teen — depicted as a wholesome, safe-for-broadcast spellcaster portrayed by Melissa Joan Hart in the late 90s and early aughts — has gotten a decidedly darker update in its Netflix iteration. Death and deviance dominate this playfully spooky new take on the witches of Greendale, giving us a reason to divinate a few hours to watching this glossy new tale. After finishing Season 1, we’re dying to dig into the show’s already-announced Season 2, and flit more fully down the Path of Night.

Sure, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has its roots in the ham-fisted world of children’s stories (the original Archie Comics iteration is more in-line with the ABC version of the show), and some of that cornballery permeates this adaptation, but this version is based on the 2014 comic run of the same name, created by the series showrunner (and Riverdale EP) Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. As with Riverdale, the tone here is decidedly dark and full of spooky unknowns. But where Aguirre-Sacasa’s CW show may have to zig to skirt the limits of broadcast television, Sabrina is allowed to fully zag without worrying about the censors or concerned parental groups who may be verklempt over Aunts Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) frequently exclaiming “hail Satan!”

Mid90s Review: Jonah Hill's Impressive Directorial Debut

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Mid90s expands into domestic wide release this weekend.

Jonah Hill's impressive directorial debut Mid90s is full of heart, fun and a sense of longing to belong somewhere that will surely resonate resonate with audiences. Hill explores adolescence and the idea of trying to find your tribe, of doing anything to fit in and the satisfaction we get when we feel like we belong. It is also a very funny movie, with some pitch-dark moments.

Mid90s actually begins, though, like a horror movie. We look into the narrow hallway of a run-down house as Stevie (Sunny Suljic) is thrown out of a room by his older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges, in a much meaner role than we have seen him in before). Ian is beating Stevie like a ton of bricks, and the sound design amplifies each punch to do as much audible damage to the audience as they do psychological damage to Stevie. Yet as soon as Ian leaves, Stevie enters his room, admiring his brother’s posters, music collection, and lifting his weights just to feel what it would be like to be Ian. Despite the constant beatings and abuse, Stevie idolizes his brother because he is desperate for a role model.

Titans Continues Its Slow Burn

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The third episode of Titans makes even more abundantly clear that it's going to be a while before we see this scattered group of heroes come together as legitimate team. This is the first time we get to see Robin, Starfire, Raven and Beast Boy actually standing in the same general place, and even that only lasts a few seconds. The series is providing viewers with a real slow burn of a narrative (even needlessly slow at times), but one that's proving to be rewarding all the same.

The biggest disappointment with "Origins" is the way it so abruptly abandons last week's Hawk and Dove storyline. As it is, it felt like a strange time to introduce two more characters not intrinsically tied to this incarnation of the Titans. As much as I enjoyed Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly in those roles, this episode only further raises the question of whether there was any point to adding Hawk and Dove into the mix so soon. The good news is that at least it appears they'll be back before Season 1 is through.

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a spoiler-free review of the series premiere of The CW's Legacies.

The Vampire Diaries and its resulting spinoff series The Originals saw pretty much every single one of their characters die and get resurrected in some new, creative way, and now, in true vampire fashion, this franchise is defying death once more with another spin-off series, Legacies.

After The CW ended creator Julie Plec's first spinoff series, The Originals, only a few months ago, the initial idea of a further spinoff – about almost an entirely new cast of characters – seemed unnecessary. Hunter Killer Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Considering all the ludicrous moments in Hunter Killer, I was longing for the film to lean into Roland Emmerich-esque self-awareness. But through po-faced monologues, intense eye-acting and gung-ho theatrics, Hunter Killer remains resolutely serious, and misses the opportunity to have a little fun in among the action.

Based on the 2012 novel Firing Point by Don Keith and George Wallace, Hunter Killer centres on a mission commandeered by US submarine Commander Joe Glass (Gerard Butler) to rescue the Russian president, held hostage by his own Defence Minister Dmitri Durov (Mikhail Gorevoy) on Russian soil.

Aiding the central mission are a group of Navy Seals on the ground led by Bill Beaman (Toby Stephens), and National Security Agency senior analyst Jayne Norquist (Linda Cardellini), Rear Admiral John Fisk (Common), and Admiral Charles Donnegan (Gary Oldman) at the Department of Defence back in the USA. Hunter Killer spends most of its time flitting between the three American groups, giving only a cursory glance toward the Russians, who are mostly shorthanded as evil thanks to Gorevoy’s scarred, reddened face.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a sprawling Western tale of loyalty, conviction, and the price of infamy, chronicling the inevitable collapse of a motley crew of Wild West holdouts kicking against the slow march of civilisation and industrialisation. Set in Rockstar’s most authentic and lived-in open world ever, there are so many things to do, so many people to meet, and so many places to explore it’s giddily overwhelming. Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t just Rockstar’s greatest achievement to date; it’s a game so lacking in compromise it’s tough to know where best to start discussing it.

So let’s start at the beginning: It’s 1899 and American outlaws are an endangered species. Dutch van der Linde and his gang are on the run after a botched heist in the growing town of Blackwater and they’ve retreated high into the mountains where an atrocious blizzard is covering their escape. We slip into the spurs of Arthur Morgan, an exceedingly cool and capable outlaw who was found by Dutch as a boy and raised on the wrong side of the law, and settle in for a roughly 60-hour story.

Books of Magic Tells a Compelling but Familiar Story

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

No doubt some readers unfamiliar with the source material will dismiss Books of Magic as a blatant Harry Potter ripoff. That's unfair, since the original comics predate Harry Potter by a number of years, but the simple fact is that the popularity of this franchise was long ago dwarfed by that of the Potterverse. Heck, spend much time on Twitter these days and it becomes painfully apparent that some people have never read a book not penned by J.K. Rowling. This new series needs to do all it can to distinguish itself and find a unique spin on the "magical boarding school" archetype. It doesn't. The basic formula remains as appealing as ever, but this series seems content to retell a story we've read before.

Amazing Spider-Man Makes Peter Parker an Outsider

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Peter Parker has really come full circle in 2018. Where a year ago he was one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the Marvel Universe, now he's back to being a broke, struggling, perpetually unloved loser. He's gone from bankrolling the Avengers to being a loner again. If anything, the current volume of Amazing Spider-Man has oversold that transition a bit. Spider-Man is treated like a pariah in the superhero community for no real reason. Luckily, issue #8 takes full advantage of Peter's outsider status as it establishes a new threat to the Marvel U.

The stakes in this issue are much higher than in the previous, Boomerang-focused storyline. An old enemy has returned in a new form, and Spider-Man is quite literally the only hero equipped to do something about it.

Netflix's Castlevania Is the King of Video Game Adaptations

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of Castlevania Season 2, which debuts on Netflix on Friday, October 26.

Why is it that Hollywood has managed to perfect the comic book movie formula over the past decade, yet producing even a halfway competent video game adaptation seems entirely beyond the abilities of most studios? Why, after all these years, are projects like 1995's Mortal Kombat and 2006's Silent Hill still held up as the benchmarks by which all others are judged? It's enough to wonder if this genre just isn't meant to succeed. Then, something like Netflix's Castlevania series comes along to prove that all we ever needed was the right combination of worthwhile source material and talented storytellers. Season 2 now cements Castlevania as king of the (admittedly short) video game adaptation hill.

Suspiria Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Dario Argento’s phantasmagoric nightmare classic Suspiria is a rite of passage for most horror fans. It’s not so much a movie as it is a vivid hallucination about a young American woman in a haunted German ballet school, where the laws of reality do not apply and terror fills the air like music. It’s a film that’s hypnotic to watch and nearly impossible to explain, and that’s a big part of its appeal.

So it’s intriguing that Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria is desperately eager to explain it. The new version has elements of the surreal but it takes place firmly within the recognizable reality of politically-charged Berlin in 1977, during the period when the Baader-Meinhof Group hijacked an airplane, an event which came to be known as “German Autumn.” Suspiria doesn’t show that event but reminds the audience about it constantly, with news reports and graffiti and dialogue that reminds us that a supernatural dance academy is only one of many local troubles.

Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) - The Heist DLC Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The first post-game DLC episode for Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Heist, is like the main game in miniature form — fantastic character work, coupled with engaging story missions and side objectives occasionally hampered by repetition. The Heist clearly serves as the first chapter of a larger story waiting to be told across Spider-Man’s three-part DLC saga called The City That Never Sleeps, and so it feels a little light on its own. But when it works, it’s a reminder of how great it is to inhabit this webhead’s world.

The Heist DLC begins quite literally with its namesake — a heist that, on a gameplay level, kicks things off with what I loved most: methodical stealth scenarios. It’s satisfying and easy to slink back into Spider-Man’s move set, especially while tackling foes who pack quite a punch. From the first brawl, which inevitably breaks out in the DLC-opening museum scenario, it’s clear these enemies are as strong as those in the later levels of the base adventure. It’s nice to see Insomniac Games try to switch things up right from the start with an engaging new crowd control objective that forced me to focus on specific enemies while also taking on the larger horde.

This Year's Most-Watched UK Drama is an Explosive Thriller

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a spoiler-free review for Netflix's Bodyguard Season 1. All six episodes are currently available to stream on Netflix

The UK's most-watched drama in 2018 (so far), which premiered on BBC One back in August, has finally made its way to Netflix subscribers in the US. There's been plenty of hype surrounding the series, not only as a popular hit with viewers across the pond, but also an exceptional thriller, helmed by showrunner Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty). Thankfully, we can confirm that all of the praise is well deserved, as Bodyguard, starring Game of Thrones alum Richard Madden, is a first-rate show brimming with terrifying, unpredictable twists and turns.

Harley Quinn's Future Is Looking Goofy

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The success of Old Lady Harley may depend largely on what you want out of this new miniseries. If you merely crave an extension of the main Harley Quinn book, one that features a similar tone and sense of humor but a radically different setting, then Old Lady Harley delivers the goods. But if you're hoping for a somber reflection on Harley's life and legacy a la Old Man Logan or The Dark Knight Returns, you may come away disappointed. It's a fun read, but not one that runs as far with the premise as it could.

Building on the initial Old Lady Harley storyline form the main series, this spinoff takes a deeper dive into the alternate future DCU where Power Girl is President of the United States, Canada is overrun by poutine-loving zombies and Harley is a few decades older and exactly as weird. The big selling point this time around is that Harley and her faithful sidekick/Deadpool clone Red Tool have to hunt down Joker, who apparently managed to cheat death yet again.

The Girl in the Spider's Web Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Anchored by a steely performance from Claire Foy as hacker-avenger Lisbeth Salander, The Girl in the Spider’s Web is arguably the most accessible entry in the Dragon Tattoo franchise. It’s more energetic than David Fincher’s artsy and aloof 2011 remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and eschews the series’ more mundane procedural aspects in favor of being a rescue the kid/retrieve the MacGuffin thriller. In that sense then The Girl in the Spider’s Web is more in line with the original Swedish film trilogy, which was itself more “Hollywood” in many ways than Fincher’s rather austere reinterpretation.

This time around, Lisbeth is on the run after a job gone wrong finds her on the bad side of both NSA agent Ed Needham (Lakeith Stanfield) and the Swedish authorities, but her real opponent is her own sister Camilla Salander (Blade Runner 2049’s Sylvia Hoeks). The proverbial sins of the past coming back to haunt Lisbeth -- a character already struggling with plenty of past trauma -- make this a particularly personal battle for her.

My Hero One's Justice Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

My Hero Academia is one of the best shonen anime currently airing, and it deserves a great video game that lives up to its reputation. While My Hero One’s Justice unfortunately doesn’t hit that high bar, it does a good job of adapting the action and spectacle of the anime into fighting game form. The gorgeous visuals and a flashy one-on-one combat system make it seem like a fan’s dream fighting game, but the shiny exterior hides a fairly simplistic foundation, and once the spectacle of the action wears off, My Hero One’s Justice feels less like All Might, and more like “just alright.”

My Hero One’s Justice is a 3D arena fighter with a combat system that could be best explained as an appropriately quirky version of Rock, Paper, Scissors. You have three main options when it comes to attacking up close: normal attacks, counter attacks, and unblockable attacks. Normals are fast enough to interrupt and beat unblockables, counters absorb normal attacks before delivering their own powerful strike, and unblockables crush through counters. There are some extra nuances of course, like just guards, dashes, and dash cancels, but that’s the general overview of combat.

The Flash Struggles With Its Supporting Cast

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The Flash has quickly established a compelling family struggle in Season 5, with Barry and Iris dealing with having their time-displaced daughter Nora hanging around Central City. But while that new conflict seems to be working in the series' favor, there's still a long way to go when it comes to reinvigorating the supporting cast. "The Death of Vibe" is the first time the new season has turned its attention more towards Cisco, Caitlin and Ralph. It's also the episode that introduces the Season 5 incarnation of Harrison Wells. But in both cases, the execution is mixed at best.

One thing this episode makes abundantly clear is that Nora has inherited her father's talent for screwing with time and making bad situations even worse. The opening scene lends a little more context to both her decision to travel back in time and the threat posed by Cicada. We now know that he's a serial killer who's destined to never be caught, not even when heroes like Supergirl or Green Arrow are brought to bear. That's all fine and well, but what's more interesting is the reveal that Nora has already messed up time so badly that Cicada has now become a different person entirely. This episode featured a nod to the character's traditional David Hersch identity from the comics while also making it clear that the series is moving in a completely different direction.

Bohemian Rhapsody Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

There’s a scene in Bohemian Rhapsody, the new biopic of late Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, where Freddie and the band explain how they don’t want their music to be formulaic or conventional. Well, their music certainly wasn’t but the movie made about them -- which Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor consulted on -- is formulaic and conventional, embracing every trope of the rock star movie/showbiz biopic. That’s not to say it isn’t entertaining; it’s often very fun, but so is singing Queen songs at karaoke. The movie rocks past the finish line on the power of sheer personality, the charisma of Rami Malek’s energetic performance as Freddie Mercury, and the coolness of Queen’s music rather than thanks to anything especially novel about the film itself.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

When something comes along that as thoroughly exceeds my expectations in so many areas as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, it reminds me why I got into video games in the first place. Far, far from a mere single player afterthought slapped onto a multiplayer collectible card game, CD Projekt Red has given us a sweeping, complex, emotional story with memorable characters, excellent voice acting, and varied, exciting card battles all along the way.

I was most blown away by the writing. Set just before the Witcher RPG trilogy during the Second Nilfgaard War, you take on the role of the dauntless, dynamic, many-layered Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia. Every step of her journey is complicated by an overwhelming enemy, abundant political intrigue, and the kind of gut-twisting, no-right-answer moral choices the Witcher series has become known for. Are you willing to sacrifice your personal honor to preserve your basic, human decency? Are you willing to do what’s best for your soldiers at the expense of a possibly instrumental alliance? This tale recognizes no distinction between good and evil – only tough, emotional, imperfect compromises that stuck with me hours after I’d made them.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 Premiere: "The Virgin Gary" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Legends of Tomorrow has been the gold standard in the Arrowverse for the past two years now. Nothing in the Season 4 premiere suggests that will be changing this year. The series is just as zany and self-aware as ever. And with the addition of a major new team member and a new supernatural conflict that's quickly shaping up to be superior to last year's Mallus story, it's doesn't look as though Legends will fall victim to the Arrowverse Season 4 curse.

For the most part, Season 3 worked in spite of the Mallus storyline rather than because of it. That definitely hurt the show in the finale and cast doubt on the idea of another season geared towards supernatural beings mucking with the Arrowverse timeline. But even though we don't get a clear sense of who or what the big antagonist of Season 4 is going to be, the premiere already does a better job of incorporating magical elements into the kooky framework of Legends. No totems. No poorly rendered CG demons. Instead, we get a hilarious conflict about a unicorn going on a killing spree at Woodstock.

Arrow Debuts Awesome New Villains

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

It's clear already that the new season of Arrow is unfolding along three parallel trajectories. On one hand, Oliver Queen is dealing with his new reality as Inmate #4587 and the challenges of trying to protect his family from behind bars. On another, Felicity and the rest of the former Team Arrow are doing their best to bring Ricardo Diaz to justice before he strikes again. And then there's the big twist introduced last week - a new flash-forward storyline that sees an older William Queen join forces with Roy Harper.

In general, Season7 is shaping up nicely, with little of the sluggish pacing and wasted potential that bogged down the early portion of Season 6 last year. Unfortunately, after two weeks it's clear that one of these three story threads doesn't quite measure up to the others.

Return of the Obra Dinn Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Almost nothing moves on the Obra Dinn, but it’s still one of the most lively video game boats I’ve been on. Its crew may be long gone, but that doesn’t stop them from having interesting voices and complex stories to tell -- most of which involve horrific deaths. I’ve never played a game quite like Return of the Obra Dinn, but now that I have, all I want is more.

This investigative story skillfully straddles the line between an adventure game, a puzzle game, and a gruesome, supernatural, Moby Dick-themed version of Guess Who. At its core, it's a detective game, but you’re not out on a mission for justice or vengeance. You’re just an insurance evaluator whose job it is to assess the long-since-done damage of a merchant ship called the Obra Dinn, which has mysteriously reappeared after four years lost at sea.

The Razer Phone 2 (See it on Amazon) is the company’s second iteration of its flagship gaming phone. The overall design is mostly unchanged, as it retains the sharp, blocky chassis from the previous version while receiving some welcome upgrades. This time around it features a glass back (for wireless charging), new camera lenses, IP67 water resistance, and a customizable RGB logo (as well as various other tweaks). All these upgrades bumped the price up a bit too, so the new phone is now $100 more than the previous one at $800. Are all these changes worth the upgrade? I spent a week with the phone in an attempt to find out.

The Walking Dead: "Warning Signs" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for The Walking Dead's "Warning Signs" follow...

Welp. I don't know how you side with Rick, as idealistic and optimistic as he is, after "Warning Signs."

I'm not saying this guy needs to go down, or anything that drastic, but the ending here, which sort of wrapped up a three-episode arc involving everyone needing the Saviors to build a bridge and many of said Saviors going missing, made a very convincing case for eliminating these a-holes and salting the soil behind them.

Sure, there's a balanced debate to be had about second chances and moving past the violence. I get that. I'm just saying that maybe something should be done, judgment should be weighed, on a case-by-case basis. Bring all the Saviors out for individual trials. Rick would love everyone to forgive (and possibly forget) just because he has, basically. And he's right to a certain extent about there needing to be a unified front of mercy, along with a charter (that Michonne is currently cooking up), for society to move forward. But maybe this generation can't do that. Or, in the very least, it's foolish to expect them to without much more than a rousing speech to guide them.

The Simpsons Misses the Mark This Halloween

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The Simpsons has been dropping new "Treehouse of Horror" specials annually for almost 30 years straight now. You'd think there would be absolutely nothing left in the horror genre for the series to lampoon at this point. That's what makes this years special so surprising. Somehow, we've made it this far without a "Treehouse of Horror" tackling either Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Jurassic Park. Then again, after watching this year's special, you have to wonder if those movies should have remained off-limits.

This year's special started out well. Rather than attempt an elaborate, horror-fied version of the usual opening theme, the show gave us a shorter Halloween vignette to kick things off. It turns out that Lovecraftian horror and New England stereotypes make for a pretty effective combination. The fact that there was so much opportunity for clever sign humor (the one area in which this series still never fails to deliver) certainly didn't hurt.

Stan and Ollie Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is an advance review. Stan & Ollie opens in limited release December 28.

It’s hard to articulate just how successful and famous comedians Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were in their heyday. Together, Laurel & Hardy starred in over 100 films, many of them box office smashes. Their cartoonish personae and impish schtick, with the rotund Hardy constantly at the receiving end of the sticklike Laurel’s oblivious gags, fit in practically any situation. They were master comedians working at the top of their game.

But all stars must fall. Jon S. Baird’s new biopic Stan & Ollie finds the two legends at the end of their careers, still as funny as ever but struggling to find an audience now that comedy has moved on, and acts like Abbott & Costello rule the entertainment world. It sounds melancholy, and sometimes it is, but Baird has nothing but warmth in his heart for these two comedy maestros. The film is as funny and charming a Hollywood biopic as you’re ever likely to find.

Well this is certainly a crazed, charged blaze of glory!

Daredevil vs. Bullseye vs. Kingpin? Are you kidding me?

All while Poindexter's trying to kill Vanessa and Matt keeps stoping him? This is pure malicious magic.

And bloody magic too. In fact, funny to note, as soon as you see both Fisk and Vanessa wearing sheer white (with that trademark rose as a final touch) you could almost smell that things were going to get messy. Either Vanessa was going to get killed, spilling her blood all over him while she dies in his arms, or Fisk was going to kill someone else and get that sinister splatter all over him. Hell, he could even spill celebratory nuptial meatballs all over himself. Somehow that garb was going to get ruined. Fisk, at his most powerful, at the happiest he's ever been, was going to face tragedy.

Netflix's Making a Murderer Can't Justify a Second Season

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Note: this is a mostly spoiler-free review of Making a Murderer Season 2, which is now available to stream on Netflix.

It's not often a true crime documentary becomes nationwide watercooler fodder, but that's the power of Making a Murderer. This Netflix original series arrived in 2015 and exposed millions of viewers to the tragic story of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, both of whom are currently serving out life sentences for the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach. As with HBO's The Jinx and the podcast Serial, it arrived at just the right time to tap into the public's current fascination with true crime and controversial murder trials.

However, much of what fueled the popularity of Making a Murderer is that it shed light on a story many viewers were wholly unfamiliar with. Three years later, each new development in Avery and Dassey's respective appeals process makes news headlines. The question is whether there's enough uncovered ground remaining to justify a second full season of the documentary. Unfortunately, Season 2 suggests that Making a Murderer would have been better served following Serial's example and focusing on a new case entirely.
