Plutona #1 Review

At this point any new #1 from Jeff Lemire is something to get excited about. There may come a time when he proves himself human with a so-so offering, but that's not what you'll find in Plutona #1. Instead, you'll find a cool, effortlessly inviting coming of age tale filled with realized characters, a compelling mystery and, oh yeah, superheroes. It's the ultimate recipe for success, and one easily devoured.

When reading Plutona, the first comparison you're likely to make is to that fist-raising classic, The Breakfast Club. Much like the film, the issue revolves around a diverse band of presumed misfits from all walks of life, brought together by circumstance to form one unlikely bond. Lemire and co-writer/artist Emi Lenox lean into this association easily, using a rapid salvo of character specific introductions to quickly establish each individual personality. Over the course of the issue these traits are further explored through the various interactions the pre-teens have with each other, Lemire showing a clear ear for dialogue that feels both appropriately youthful and emotionally layered. While familiar, Lemire is careful not to let any one character fall entirely into a specific trope. There are definitely some archetypes in use, but they're used in such unique ways that we're left guessing as to the role they'll ultimately play in the future.
