The Boys: Season 2, Episode 5 Review

[poilib element="accentDivider"] The Boys' second season continues to successfully develop its mighty character-driven storyline with another entertaining entry in Episode 5, titled "We Gotta Go Now." While Aya Cash continues to dazzle as Stormfront/Liberty in Season 2, it's Antony Starr's Homelander who steals the show this week. His midlife superhero crisis offers a nice bit of tension and suspense as you're never quite sure when he's just going to say "Screw it!" and burn the world down. Watching Homelander mow down a crowd full of innocent bystanders with his laser vision (even though it was just in his head) was a nice way to demonstrate just how powerful someone with Superman-level strength really is. What exactly is holding him together after so much disappointment and betrayal is hard to say. Perhaps it has to do with his budding relationship with Stormfront. And as far as superhero sex scenes go, creator Eric Kripke and his team of writers really outdid themselves here with a very awkward and hilarious set-piece featuring two great actors. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/02/the-boys-how-much-does-homelander-know-about-homelander"] Not only did Homlander and Stormfront's ariel sexapades offer some stunning visuals and a few good laughs, but the scene also provided us with another telling example of just how powerful Season 2's new "heroine" is. There's little doubt that when Stormfront told Homelander to not hold back and laser her chest area, he was doing just that. It's crazy to think that Stormfront can withstand the full might of Homelander's power. While it's difficult to know exactly what her endgame is here, she's definitely capable of taking everyone in The Seven down if she so chooses. And now she has the second most powerful member of the team wrapped around her finger. With an ensemble as big as Amazon's The Boys, there are bound to be a few characters whose storylines don't carry as much narrative weight as their counterparts, and Queen Maeve (so far) is sadly one such example. Though we've enjoyed Dominique McElligott's portrayal of Maeve throughout the series, the plot in Season 2 involving her forceful "coming out" as a lesbian and subsequent drama with her girlfriend is a bit lackluster. Perhaps Maeve will chart her own course in the future, but for now, it's sad to see her being pushed around by Vought like a pawn. Thankfully, this week's adventure did give us a bit more time with Kamiko and Frenchie, who shared a heartwarming moment in the church scene. Even without speaking, Karen Fukuhara is able to convey so much emotion with her body language and facial expressions alone. While it's probably too early to be talking potential spinoffs for The Boys... Sign me up for a Frenchie & Kamiko series! [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/24/amazons-the-boys-season-2-review"] "We Gotta Go Now" featured a few somber moments with Billy as he attempts to punish himself for losing Becca once again. And as difficult as it was to watch, the tender moments between him and Hughie (though subtle) were very moving. Getting to see Billy around his relatives was also a nice change of pace and offered more insight into his past. Learning about his dead brother Lenny and his likeness to Hughie added another impactful layer to their relationship. We're excited to see how their big brother/little brother dynamic develops in future episodes. But as moving as Billy and Hughie's scenes were, their showdown with Black Noir was less than stellar. While the suspense leading up to the encounter was palpable, once the bullets started flying, the fight was over too quickly. Sure, Black Noir is an absolute badass when it comes to strength and combat skills, but it would have been nice to see the guys put up more of a challenge to the silent assassin... Maybe next time?
