Some spoilers for Show Me a Hero “Part 1” within.
The Wire creator David Simon and Crash director Paul Haggis have teamed for a new HBO miniseries with an all-star cast that, despite taking place in 1987 Yonkers, reflects much of the racial turmoil currently plaguing our country. In true David Simon fashion, Show Me a Hero -- which debuts Sunday night -- takes on issues of race and social prejudice with careful calculation, but its first episode struggles to find a grip on its characters and falls a little too deep down the municipal government exposition well.
Based on true events, the show’s premise revolves around a federal decision for the city of Yonkers to build a small number of low-income housing units in the middle of its predominately white neighborhoods, as penance for the misuse of federal housing funds. Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina and the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens and X-Men: Apocalypse) carries the show as the lead protagonist Nick Wasicsko, an up-and-coming Democrat that wins the mayorship of Yonkers on the platform of supporting the voters that want an appeal on the decision, only to be left holding the bag when said appeal is immediately overturned and the voters turn against him.
