Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
The Strain's second season has hit some bumps over the past few weeks, but on the whole the show seems to be on stronger ground tan it was last year. "Identity" certainly bore that out. This episode kicked several running storylines into high gear while finally introducing one of the most popular characters from the novels into the mix.
This episode didn't waste any time in following up on last week's tease. Fan-favorite vampire character Quinlan (played by Rupert Penry-Jones) is now in the mix. It seems the show pulled a bit of a bait-and-switch when Vaun were introduced late last season - similar character, but only intended as a placeholder. We can infer from this episode that Vaun and his team are out of the picture for good. Which is a shame considering how much screen presence Stephen McHattie brought to his role, but at least Penry-Jones seems equal to the task. Quinlan enjoyed a strong debut as he conferred with the Ancients, even going so far as to show disdain for his "betters" as he chided them for not dealing with the Master properly. I'm eager to see how Quinlan's character arc unfolds this season, especially with recent promises that he'll be a much different character than he is in the books.
