Even taking the story completely out of the equation, Batman #54 is notable for marking the long overdue return of artist Matt Wagner to the Batman franchise. It's a shame that said return had to become embroiled in such pointless scandal (more on that here), but the fact remains that Wagner is the latest in a series of talented artists to leave their mark on this series. Couple that with the appeal of having writer Tom King reconnect with Dick Grayson, and this issue never fails to please.
Four issues after Bruce Wayne was left at the altar by Selina Kyle, that failed marriage still hangs heavy over the series and Bruce's nightly actions as Batman. Sensing his old mentor is suffering, Dick has elected to stick around Gotham City for a while even after having handed back the cape and cowl. As with so many issues, the narrative constantly shifts between past and present as King and Wagner juxtapose the current Batman/Nightwing dynamic against the early days of the Dynamic Duo.
