Oh man, Captain Pike.
Fans of Star Trek: The Original Series have long wondered what the circumstances of Pike’s inevitable accident actually looked like. We’ve known it involved a cadet training session gone awry that resulted in his getting doused in delta radiation, but beyond that the tragic event was left to our imaginations. Not anymore.
This of course is in keeping with Discovery Season 2’s habit of leaving no continuity stone unturned, even while simultaneously playing chicken with said continuity. But as with the previous dip into Pike’s past (and future) where we revisited Talos IV and Vina, "Through the Valley of Shadows" strikes the right balance of touching upon classic or even iconic imagery from TOS while also utilizing that imagery to deepen the Anson Mount character.
