This is a spoiler-free advance review of Apple TV Plus' Dickinson. The first three episodes of the series will be available to stream on Apple TV Plus on Friday, November 1, with episodes rolling out weekly thereafter. Emily Dickinson is a woman who feels — as more and more biographical information comes out, to say nothing of her magnetic poetry — rife for reconsideration and recontextualization through a modern lens. Though her life may have seemed quite small to many on the surface, reading the way she wrote out her emotions proves hers was a life that was quite expansive and full — her writing feels electric. It’s why, by many standards, Dickinson’s work changed the game in terms of how poetry, emotion, and expression collides into evocative art; it’s no wonder Apple’s new series Dickinson chose to represent that with a more modern tone and visually luscious retelling. Whether it surpasses the sum of its parts is another matter entirely.
