Reading Powers of X #6 is a very bittersweet experience. It's been a long time since the act of reading a new X-Men comic was this exciting and unpredictable. And even though this is just the first leg in a longer journey, the thought that we'll no longer have a new Jonathan Hickman-penned X-book on the stands every single week is saddening. "Bittersweet" also aptly describes the tone of this final issue. We've had our glimpse of the bright, hopeful new future awaiting the X-Men in House of X #6. Now comes the necessary antithesis - the reminder that peace only comes at a tremendous cost for the victor.
Issue #6 takes readers back to the very beginning of this story, reprinting basically the entirety of the original Year 1 scene where a young Charles Xavier meets Moira MacTaggert for the first time. What initially seems an unnecessary use of time and page space is eventually justified when the issue circles back around again. It's helpful to have that reminder of where Powers of X began, especially with how this issue mirrors a pivotal panel and presents Xavier's revelation in a completely different light. Powers of X #6 is very much the dark, foreboding counterpart to House of X #6's happy ending. It may technically be possible to read House of X or Powers of X on their own, but they complement and build on one another too heavily to make that a valid option.
