Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of Spencer & Locke 2 #1, which will be available to pre-order in February 2019.
The traditional comic strip may be a dying art form at this point, if only because the newspaper itself is a dying medium. But regardless of the medium, these iconic characters and archetypes still strike a powerful chord when paired with the right storytellers. That's pretty much the appeal with Spencer & Locke. The original miniseries was notable for spoofing one of the most beloved strips of all time - Calvin & Hobbes - even as it distorted the story of a boy and his imaginary tiger friend through a Sin City-style lens. These two gritty, psychologically damaged detectives are finally back for a sequel, and Spencer & Locke 2 immediately proves there's plenty of potential left in this bizarre comic book mash-up.
