Full spoilers follow for this episode.
The return of Harry Mudd to the Star Trek universe for Discovery Season 1 was always a bit of a head-scratcher. Rainn Wilson, huh? As a character who hasn’t appeared in live-action since 1967? And a largely comedic character at that? O.K. then…
And yet here we are, with the latest Short Trek, “The Escape Artist,” and Wilson has already tied original Mudd actor Roger C. Carmel for the number of times he’s played the role (Carmel was on The Original Series twice while also voicing the character for an episode of The Animated Series, while Wilson was on Disco twice in S1 and now stars in this short). Somewhere along the way, Wilson’s Mudd has settled in as an accepted part of this era of Star Trek, and “The Escape Artist” actually gives us a tale where the character finally gets to win for once.
