Over the past two decades Asia has gained a reputation as home to one of the most exciting and inventive genre film communities. From terrifying Korean horror hits like Tale of Two Sisters and Train to Busan, to Japanese classics like Ringu and Ju-On: The Grudge, all the way through Indonesian game changers like V/H/S/2's Safe Haven and The Night Comes For Us, the rest of the world is still catching up with the continent's unique and terrifying genre output. HBO's new anthology horror series Folklore (now streaming on HBO NOW, HBO GO, and HBO On Demand) hopes to highlight other brilliant Asian horror directors with six new films from helmers inspired by local folk tales from their respective countries, and generally it succeeds.
