This is a (mostly) spoiler-free review of Netflix's Raising Dion, which premiered on Netflix on October 4, 2019.
One of the most interesting things about a superhero is the dichotomy between their secret identity and super alter ego. Beyond the villains they face, it’s this duality that challenges them the most -- Spider-Man’s struggle to balance the different aspects of his life is arguably what makes his story so compelling. The same can be said of Netflix’s new superhero/science fiction series Raising Dion.
Based on the Dennis Liu comic/short film of the same name, Raising Dion follows the story of Nicole Reese (Alisha Wainwright) and her son Dion (Ja’Siah Young) shortly after the death of her husband Mark (Michael B. Jordan). As one would imagine, the difficulty associated with being a single parent is ever-present.
