Note - this is a spoiler-free advance review of Daredevil #1, which will be released on Wednesday, December 2.
Daredevil has to be one of the most intimidating assignments at Marvel. Is there any other superhero franchise with such an impressive track record over the years, from Frank Miller to Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev to Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark to Mark Waid and Chris Samnee? The new creative team on the latest Daredevil relaunch have big shoes to fill. Luckily, if this first issue is any indication, writer Charles Soule and artist Ron Garney have what it takes.
Soule may be one of Marvel's hottest writers these days, but it's really Garney and colorist Matt Milla who make a bold statement in this opening chapter. Fans who remember Garney's work from books like Wolverine: Weapon X and Thor: God of Thunder may be bowled over by just how much his style has changed. Gone are the thin, precise lines and the distinctive, un-inked approach. Befitting Daredevil's moody, noir-soaked world and the return to a New York setting, Garney's pages are now more heavily stylized and practically in shadows.
