Joy Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

In order for a character to triumph, they have to face adversity. There is no victory, at least in a movie, without hardship. However, simply having adversity early on and triumph before the credits roll isn't enough – the progression from one to the other is important. In David O. Russell's latest collaboration with Jennifer Lawrence, Joy, there is adversity galore, and there is triumph, but the film lets down its audience in the trip from the former to the latter.

Based loosely on the life of inventor and home shopping star Joy Mangano, the movie is over the top in setting up Joy's obstacles and her quirky family in the first 30 minutes. We are introduced to her mother, who does nothing but watch soap operas; her grandmother, who is always there with a pie in the sky belief about Joy's potential for success; her ex-husband, who lives in the basement and is never going to be a successful singer no matter how much he tries; her father, who also lives in the basement, has a temper problem and a slowly failing business; and her sister, who really wants Joy to fail so she can succeed.
