Once Upon a Time Season 5 Midseason Finale Review

The Dark Ones descended upon Storybrooke in Once Upon a Time's midseason finale, but they didn't get very far. For evil forces, they didn't cause much trouble either. Their plan was thwarted, but it's weird that they didn't stir the pot beyond marking some of the living for the Ferryman. After the build-up of the last episode, the actions of the collective Dark Ones were underwhelming. It's a waste of what seemed like the biggest threat ever introduced to the series.

Though seeing the Dark Ones handled so quickly was disappointing, it did keep the focus on a smaller scale and mostly about Hook and Emma. Hook's decision between good and evil in the present was driven by a mistake in his past with his father (Adam Croasdell) that we're conveniently hearing about for the first time. The flashbacks were a smart inclusion because they reminded of us of how bad Hook was. Watching him be terribly evil in the past puts his jump into the darkness in the present into perspective.
