Better Call Saul: "Sunk Costs" Review

The third episode of Season 3 begins with Better Call Saul viewers literally waiting for the shoe to drop, and while we eventually found out why that cold open was relevant, I can think of no better idiom to summarize this episode.

Our two main storylines are getting to a place where it seems inevitable that things will go terribly, though ultimately they hopefully will benefit our characters eventually. Mike's big event was finally meeting Gus Fring face-to-face, and he begins slowly to work for him -- though not under official terms, at this point -- to continue his quest to mess with Hector Salamanca.

Which brings us back to the shoes. If there's one thing Mike is good at, it's putting together an elaborate con to get what he wants. In this case, it was filling a shoe with drugs, hanging said shoes on a telephone wire over a route where he knew Salamanca's men would travel, causing them to stop and then distracting them while putting them in a situation where he could shoot the drug-filled shoe and have it leave a residue on their truck, and then have them get stopped at the border. Again, a very elaborate way for Mike to mess with Hector's plans, but a successful one nonetheless.
