Deadpool vs. Punisher #1 Review

Whether he's battling Gambit, Thanos or the entire Marvel Universe, Marvel's publishing lineup is rarely without at least one crossover-focused Deadpool comic. The appeal with Deadpool vs. Punisher is less about the novelty of uniting the two characters than the creative team. Fred Van Lente's name crops up too rarely in the Marvel U. these days, but his books are always worth following.

Van Lente and artist Pere Perez don't necessarily break the mold here when it comes to superhero crossovers, but they give this team-up enough flavor to prevent it from becoming too predictable or formulaic. Van Lente shines as he contrasts the wildly disparate personalities of Wade Wilson and Frank Castle. Both play to Van Lente's humor-writing strengths, although obviously Deadpool is a more overtly funny character than the grim-faced Punsiehr. Van Lente mostly relies on a series of Superman/Batman-style narrative captions to highlight the differences between the two. The captions are amusing, but more importantly, they go a long way towards establishing what horse each character has in this particular race.
