Note: this is a spoiler-free review of the first episode of Downward Dog, which premieres on ABC tonight.
It's tempting to immediately dismiss any new sitcom when the premise centers around "talking dog." That suggests a show that panders to the lowest common denominator. Luckily, there are no laugh tracks or cheap gags in the first episode of Downward Dog. The show has its fair share of problems out of the gate, but there's an earnestness and sweetness to this story of a woman and her four-legged best friend that serves it well.
Creators Samm Hodges and Michael Killen adapt the web series of the same name, framing the series around the relationship between a struggling single woman named Nan (Fargo's Allison Tolman) and her attention-deprived pooch, Martin (voiced by Hodges). This isn't one of those Family Guy/ALF situations where everyone is aware the critter that shouldn't be talking can talk. The show presents itself as a faux-documentary of sorts, with Martin pouring his heart out to the camera whenever his master isn't around to give him the attention he so badly craves.
